JOHNSON AMY: (1903-1941) English Pioneer Aviatrix. An interesting A.L.S., Amy Johnson, two pages, 8vo, Salzburg, 4th February n.y., to the philatelists Francis J. Field Ltd ('Dear Sirs'). Johnson apologises for the delay in responding to her correspondent's letter and continues 'I am very interested to hear that you have seen one of my air-mail covers & should like to know under what circumstances you saw it, if you can disclose them to me. I am interested because I took only ten such “covers” with me, of which I have given five or six away (one was sold at the Johannesburg Exhibition) & I am wondering if any of these are now in circulation'. Johnson further states 'Unfortunately I have only four left, of which I wish to keep two or three. This means that the number for sale is very limited' and concludes 'Would you let me know what is your idea of value of these covers. If you wished to borrow one to examine or photograph you can do so….Unfortunately they are not yet signed but I expect to be back in the middle of next week'. With a couple of pencil annotations to the margin, including '£5 each offered'. Some light creasing, age wear and a couple of small tears to the lower edge of each page, only very slightly affecting the text and signature. About VG Francis J. Field (1895-1992) Philatelist and Stamp Dealer who specialised in aero-philately. Founder of the firm Francis J. Field Limited.

General - Thematics : MEDICAL AND HEALTH - 'Health' is a huge subject to collect and in all my 43 years full-time in philately this is the most extraordinary thematic health collection I have ever seen - an outstanding and extensive worldwide A-Z 'health' collection but going into fascinating depth way beyond most - such as Q. why would the collection include a mint Gandhi set including 10R? - Answer: Gandhi, whilst working in South Africa raised an Ambulance Corps at the outbreak of the Boer War. Does this serve to give a small flavour of this fascinating collection and the years of work and research that have gone into it? Neatly presented in sixteen quality albums, covering all aspects from Malaria, Aids, UNICEF, Red Cross, W.H.O., Family Planning, personalities incl. pioneers etc, with mint (large percentage is unmounted) and used stamps (incl. some imperf variants) spanning the early 1900's right through to the 1990's, plus masses of miniature sheets, and covers etc; to give a flavour, the collection includes Estonia 1920's imperf and perf sets, Denmark 1929 Cancer sets mint and used, Czechoslovakia 1926 Display set mint, 1884 three covers from Canada to Palermo with disinfected "slits", Malta 1841 and 1851 "Lazaret" disinfected cachets, Albania 1924 sets mint, India 1948 Gandhi set mint, 1849 Pavia disinfected cover, Solomon Islands 1938 "Send the Doctor" printed cover, Trinidad 1914 ¼d labels block of four mint, WW1 postcards ex. Salonica hospital, other Russian area cards from Nurses, and many other better pieces throughtout. A lifetimes work, beautifully displayed and most importantly written up - it would be an absolute joy for the right collector to take this collection to an even higher level, and unlike some subjects the scope is almost infinite to continue from this already significant base. (approx 9850 stamps, 470 miniature sheets and 235 covers or cards). Please note the whole collection may be viewed online; please ask UPA to email the Google Picassa link. OVERSEAS SHIPPING COST may exceed £100 but we will contribute the 1st £100 of shipping so the winning bidder just pays any difference.
