Philately - a collection of approximately 30 items of postal history comprising airgraphs and air letters sent from overseas military units during WWII. There are several hand-illustrated unique examples of birthday and Christmas greetings. All neatly mounted with photo corners on album sheets, many with detailed descriptions annotated to page.
Philately: Gibraltar QV-QEII, definitives and commemoratives, in one album, an album of train related modern commemoratives, including Tubalu and St Vincent, Great Britain and Commonwealth First Day Covers, including Belize, Tanzania, The Gambia, South Georgia and Tokelau, Elizabeth II definitives, machins, etc.
Hong Kong : (SG 54b) 1898 (1st April) 10c on 30c grey-green, SURCHARGE DOUBLE with equal intensity, from position 17 of the third printing showing broken 'EN', very fine mint, and with 2011 BPA photo certificate signed by Schneider, Granger and Taylor, probably the most knowledgeable experts in the field today. To put the rarity of this stamp into perspective, the 10c on 30c with Chinese characters similarly with double surcharge has been recorded incl. within a complete mint pane, and a handful of singles (currently priced at £12,000 by SG). ONLY one row in a single pane became doubly printed, and the row comprised a setting of six subjects (incl. the above variety showing 'EN' broken); Moving on to the same stamp issue without Chinese characters which this is, ONLY ONE OTHER EXAMPLE IS KNOWN and unpriced by SG, and to find one with this combination of broken letters is almost certainly unique. A Hong Kong and indeed Asian philately rarity of the highest calibre. (image available) [US6]

LUGOSI BELA: (1882-1956) Hungarian Actor, famous for his screen and stage portrayal of Bram Stoker's Count Dracula. An interesting T.L.S., Bela Lugosi, one page, 4to, Christopher Street, New York, 4th May 1950, to Bertram W. H. Poole. Lugosi writes 'On December 6th 1949 you were so kind and gracious to inform me that “if you will pay me $800 within the next six or eight months I would be glad to call the matter square”'and continues to add that he appreciates his correspondent's 'sporty attitude' although remarks 'Unfortunately I'm still struggling to approach my reduced overhead and can hardly make it', explaining 'The 8th month expires at the end of July and I start my summer stock engagements around the end of June and from then on I would be in the position to send you $100.00 a week for the coming eight weeks. If you could afford to agree to that it would solve my problem' and also making an alternative suggestion, 'On the other hand I just spoke to a friend and country man of mine, a reputable stamp dealer and auctioner (sic) whom you know well, Mr. Ferryman…..who would be glad to put my collection on auction - using my name as bait'. Lugosi further writes 'In case you would favor the later proposition be so kind and get in touch with him stipulating your conditions and the legal way you would wish it should be handled and put in writing to assure your security'. Accompanied by the original envelope. Together with a carbon typed copy of Poole's reply to Lugosi, unsigned, one page, 4to, California, 9th May 1950, thanking the actor for his letter and stating, in part, 'I was beginning to wonder when I would hear from you again. If you can guarantee to send me $100 a week for the months of July and August that would be a satisfactory solution of the problem. As the end of the so-called stamp “season” is rapidly approaching it would hardly be possible to get quicker action by letting Ferryman sell the collection at auction. It takes considerable time to lot stamps for a sale, print the catalogues, distribute them some weeks in advance etc….' Also including a second, earlier T.L.S., Bela Lugosi, (a secretarial signature, most likely in the hand of Lugosi's fourth wife, Lillian Arch), one page, 4to, Hotel Woodrow, New York, 15th October 1949, also to Bertram W. H. Poole. Lugosi states that he has been travelling all over the country 'to make a meager (sic) living' and remarks 'The whole situation is very embarrassing to me and I never would have had the nerve to borrow the money if I thought it would turn out like this', explaining '…I am sure you know that the film industry was dead and I only made one picture in three years. Finally I had to go out and pick up odd jobs to cover overhead and take care of the most important matter my stamp collection', concluding 'I appreciate your generous offer to send you 200.00 at my earliest convenience, which I will do, and after that 100.00 or more a month. I cannot explain how deeply I appreciate your patience. Thank you, thank you'. Accompanied by the original envelope. An unusual group of letters relating to Lugosi's interest in philately and illustrating the well documented financial struggles the actor was experiencing at this stage of his career. VG, 3 Bertram William Henry Poole (1880-1957) English Philatelist who settled in America from around 1913. Poole wrote numerous handbooks on stamps and also founded and edited several magazines including Poole's Monthly Philatelist, Philatelic Opinion and The Philatelic Journal of Great Britain. He was one of the original signatories to Great Britain's Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1921. The website Mental Floss reports that Lugosi was a 'hardcore' stamp collector and also states that his fourth wife, Lillian Arch, estimated that her husband had amassed more than 150,000 stamps. The actor once declared that 'stamp collecting is a hobby which may cost you as much as 10% of your investment. You can always sell your stamps with not more than a 10% loss. Sometimes, you can even make money'.
