Even though it was manufactured for a long period, production was quite limited, resulting in a total of about 1500 pieces produced. The cases, made primarily in yellow gold, were produced in rose gold, steel and steel-gold as well, but in much more limited quantities. The dials were also the subject of great experimentation, with different designs, indexes, numerals and scales.
Patek Philippe Riccio 1491 retailed by Rolandi, donated by Achille Lauro to Pasquale Di Costanzo on the occasion of the 1952 Piedigrotta celebration, 50s18k gold round case, n.668613, scroll lugs.Cream coloured dial, applied indexes.Hand-winding movement, cal.27SC, n.701273.18k gold bracelet with riveted elastic links with clasp engraved "Piedigrotta 52 a Pasquale Di Costanzo", additional Patek Philippe leather strap and Patek Philippe gold buckle.Size: 34 mm.Accompanied by Patek Philippe extract from the archives. Reference 1491, produced between 1940 and 1958, is one of the most charismatic timepieces made by Patek Philippe. Nicknamed "Riccio" because of the scroll lugs similar to a curly lock of hair, the model is also nicknamed "Fernandel" by French collectors, as the famous comedian was known to wear this reference. Pasquale Di Costanzo was an important fabrics merchant, as well as a well-known decorator and scenographer for theatrical and artistic events. His name is indissolubly tied to the San Carlo theatre in Naples, of which he was superintendent from May 1994 with the Aida to December 1972 with the Turandot. Di Costanzo managed to give international fame to the San Carlo, and he was able to bring to its stage the most famous directors and artists of the period.Achille Lauro was a celebrated merchant ships owner and politician. He was the owner of one of the most important Italian fleets of all time, the Flotta Lauro, and after the Second world war he has been a leading exponent of the monarchic faction. He has been mayor of Naples for two times, from July 1952 to December 1957, and in 1961, as well as member of Parliament and senator of the Republic. Achille Lauro was an historical president of Napoli football team. The Piedigrotta festival was a popular celebration that took place on September 8th in Naples. It experienced the height of its splendor between the end of the nineteenth century and the second half of the twentieth century, when it became the showcase for the Neapolitan music together with the Festival of the Neapolitan song.Rolandi was a niche boutique founded in Naples in 1948, and to the best of our researches in commercial activity for very few years, making this dial personalization a true chimera. This specific watch has been donated by Achille Lauro to Pasquale Di Costanzo, as a sign of recognition for the organization of the 1952 Piedigrotta celebration.

It was Patek Philippe first and only vintage waterproof chronograph, thanks to its screw back case and round pump pushers (for which it was nicknamed "Tasti Tondi" by Italian collectors). Reference 1463 was a sportier alternative to the classy chronograph 130, and it was designed for a contemporary society with an increasing interest in outdoor activities. To the best of our knowledge, 750 specimens were produced in total, with the majority in yellow gold, and a very limited number in rose gold or stainless steel.Remark: According to Patek Philippe archives, the case of the present watch was changed during a servicing in their workshops in 1987, with the new case back mistakenly engraved 1363 instead of 1463.
