A fine and very rare 20th century enamel-decorated solar powered rhodium plated mantel timepiece with original paperwork.Patek Philippe, 874536. Circa 1973. The low rectangular case surmounted by a solar panel between square-section uprights, both sides and the hinged rear door decorated with abstract blue and green enamel inlay against a bark-effect ground, the 4.5 inch silvered dial signed on an applied plaque, with applied lapis lazuli baton numerals, each hand heightened with a line of blue enamel, the movement with a 1.5V battery continuously powered by the solar panel above driving a 29-jewel gilt mechanical movement with lever escapement. Together with the original Certificate of Origin and receipt dated 20 September 1973 for 6,750 Swiss Francs. It was produced in May 1908 and sold in February 1909. The watch was beautifully decorated for Constant Coquelin as a gift for his role in the Edmond Rostand play "Chantecler". Comme le mentionne la lettre de Patek Philippe datée du 11 avril 1972, à la demande de Mr Jean Coquelin, par l'intermédiaire de la Maison Guillermin & Mollet, Place Vendôme à Paris, la montre a été fabriquée en mai 1908 par Patek Philippe et vendue le 25 février 1909 à la Maison Perusset & Didisheim. Monsieur Manuel d' Huicque l'a offerte à son ami Constant Coquelin à l'occasion de la première de la pièce " Chantecler" prévue en 1909 (un vide a été laissé pour la date exacte), comme le précise la première dédicace sur la cuvette de la montre. Constant Coquelin avait été choisi pour incarner le rôle principal de " Chantecler " par Edmond Rostand.Cependant, l'acteur meurt prématurément en 1909, avant la première, et la montre revient à son fils Jean, qui l'offrira en 1917 à un ami " Dean, en souvenir de son père " (seconde dédicace à l'intérieur du boîtier).La montre sera ensuite vendue aux enchères par la Maison Chayette-Cheval à l' Hôtel Drouot le 13 juin 1984, adjugée au père de l'actuel propriétaire, qui collectionnait avec passion tous les objets en rapport avec le Coq.N.B. la lettre de Patek Philippe de 1972 ne mentionne aucun décor émaillé dans ses Registres. Cependant, la qualité d'exécution de l'émail et le réalisme apporté aux traits de Constant Coquelin font preuve d'un savoir faire extrêmement abouti."Chantecler" est une pièce de théâtre en quatre actes d'Edmond Rostand dont l'originalité est de mettre en scène des animaux. Pendant cinq ans, elle est constamment reportée pour être finalement représentée pour la première fois le 7 février 1910 au théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin devant le Tout-Paris. Edmond Rostand choisit lui-même Constant Coquelin pour interpréter "Chantecler" mais il meurt avant la première. Le rôle est finalement confié àLucien Guitry." Sur une basse-cour règne un coq, Chantecler, tellement convaincu de son importance qu'il s'imagine, par son chant, faire se lever le soleil. Mais l'arrivée d'une poule faisane bouleverse sa vie, lui révélant l'amour, de telle sorte qu'il en oublie de chanter. L'astre du jour étant cependant apparu, Chantecler devient la risée de tous les animaux domestiques et sauvages, et surtout des hiboux, créatures de la nuit qui le détestent, et le contraignent à accepter un combat public avec un autre coq. Le combat se déroule dans le salon littéraire de la Pintade. Vainqueur après avoir frôlé la mort, Chantecler défend alors la basse-cour contre les menaces d'un épervier et recouvre ainsi une part de son prestige. Injustement délaissée, mais comprenant que chez le coq la vanité est plus forte que l'amour, la faisane se sacrifie néanmoins pour lui et se porte à sa place au-devant d'un chasseur. Un coup part, mais c'est le rossignol à la voix d'or qui est blessé à mort. Le chant rauque du coq continuera seul à célébrer l'aube. "As mentioned in the letter from Patek Philippe dated April 11th 1972, at the request of Mr. Jean Coquelin, through the intermediary of the Maison Guillermin & Mollet, Place Vendôme in Paris, the watch was made in May 1908 by Patek Philippe and sold on February 25, 1909 to the Maison Perusset & Didisheim. Mr. Manuel d' Huicque offered it to his friend Constant Coquelin on the occasion of the premiere of the play "Chantecler" scheduled for 1909 (a gap has been left for the exact date), as specified in the first dedication on the case of the watch. "Chantecler" is a play in four acts by Edmond Rostand whose originality is to stage animals. During five years, it is constantly postponed to be finally represented for the first time on February 7, 1910 at the theater of the Porte-Saint-Martin in front of the whole Paris. Edmond Rostand himself chose Constant Coquelin to play "Chantecler" but he died before the premiere. The role is finally given to Lucien Guitry."A rooster, Chantecler, reigns over a barnyard, so convinced of his importance that he imagines that his crowing will make the sun rise. But the arrival of a pheasant hen turns his life upside down, revealing love to him in such a way that he forgets to crow. However, the sun having appeared, Chantecler becomes the laughing stock of all domestic and wild animals, and especially of the owls, creatures of the night who hate him, and force him to accept a public fight with another rooster. The fight takes place in the literary salon of the Guinea fowl. Winning after a near-death experience, Chantecler defends the barnyard against the threats of a sparrowhawk and thus recovers some of his prestige. Unjustly neglected, but understanding that in the rooster vanity is stronger than love, the pheasant nevertheless sacrifices herself for him and goes in his place to meet a hunter. A shot goes off, but it is the nightingale with the golden voice who is mortally wounded. The hoarse crowing of the rooster will continue alone to celebrate the dawn. "
