An 18ct gold bracelet by Gay Frères, circa 1971, designed as a series of stepped oval plaques each with a textured finish, accompanied by one additional link, maker’s mark, French assay marks, London import mark, length 17cm. £1,800-£2,200 --- The workshop of Gay Frères was created in 1835 by Jean-Pierre Gay and Gaspard Tissot in Geneva. They specialised in making chains for pocket watches and jewellery and by the beginning of the 20th century were supplying watch bracelets for the biggest Swiss watch companies. Rolex was an early client and Gay Frères produced stainless steel, gold and platinum bracelets for them. By the 1940s, they were supplying Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, and soon also working for other watch makers including Audermars Piquet and Jaeger LeCoultre. By the 1970s, the company, still family owned, were running the largest factory in Geneva, employing over 500 specialist craftsmen. Gay Frères went on to create jewellery for the prestigious Parisian Maisons such as Hermès and Van Cleef & Arpels. They continue to be regarded as world specialists in handmade chains and watch bracelets, and still produce a new jewellery collection each year - including chain necklaces, bracelets, torques, cuffs and rings in a variety of gold finishes and textures. A gentleman's 18ct gold Patek Philippe Gondola wristwatch, movement 830062/611656, model number 422J-SCI circa 1940's with manual wind movement, the rectangular case with cream dial with subsidiary second dial, Arabic numerals at 3,9 and 12, snap on back, the movement numbered and marked Patek Philippe & Co Geneva, the backplate also marked with the maker and stamped 611656 18K, case size 35mm x 1 mm including lugs. The watch has just returned from a full Patek Philippe service. Condition - full working order, recently serviced. History - the watch was full serviced at Patek Philippe in 2017 full details on estimate and repair work available including replaced hour hand, dial restoration and cleaning. This watch was the property of James Issacs Stealey. In the 1920's he owned a chain of photographic studios in England and was involved in the famous Jermyn Street Turkish Baths, James was a notorious poker player, a 1940's photograph of James on board a cruise ship shows him wearing his Patek wristwatch (family rumour has it was won in a card game. Following his death in the1950's the watch was stored in a family safe, and then bequeathed to his great grandson who sent it to Patek in 2017 for full restoration.
