ROOSEVELT MARTHA: (1835-1884) American Socialite, mother of American President Theodore Roosevelt and the paternal grandmother of Eleanor Roosevelt. A true southern belle, she is considered to have been one of the inspirations for Margaret Mitchell's character Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. A good, lengthy A.L.S., Mittie, six pages, 8vo, Henderson, Herkimer County, 28th September 1882, to [Captain James D. Bulloch] 'My darling Brother', on mourning stationery. Roosevelt commences her letter stating 'I think of you tenderly & most lovingly as seated in that little room at Irvine's writing & thinking & looking so far away in yr. dear brown eyes', adding that she shall 'eagerly look for your book & read it with mingled feelings of pride, interest, love, all deeply permeated with the patient, thoughtful, painstaking truthful writer who tho' the revival of most of the incident must be painful in one sense must still remember thy interest such incidents will lend his book'. Roosevelt continues her charming letter with family news of their recent activities and many references to relatives and mutual friends, in part, '…the four or five months Theodore, Elliott & Corinne spent in Dresden in 1873 is always fresh in their memory - & it gave them such a spur in their German. Nannie being near Linlie will be a great comfort & advantage to her. I long to hear of her departure & first impressions….Bamie & I spend October at Tranquillity - hoping that Alice & Teddie, Corinne & Douglas & Elliott will spend some Saturdays & Sundays with us - November will find us all in the City for the winter. I wish you all could see the glorious view from The Mansion & the Farm House….clear atmosphere with every distant point & range, tree farm in view & blue either overall, then all in melting haze & great soft masses of clouds. Purple & gold sunsets, golden sun sets - then the heavens flecked with soft pink clouds & the distant hills steeped in depths of saphire (sic) blue….We took Tea with old Mr & Mrs Ward yesterday in their most comfortable Farm House which had the usual bead baskets large Bible in the best parlour & our tea was exquisite in its daintiness & brightly cleaned real silver….the Pastor of the primitive little church at the village of Henderson is a most agreeable man, a scholar & very fine preacher - Their House most pretty, cake & home made wine they refreshed us with when we called…..Douglas has gone in his dog cart for our mail at Jordanville. He is also ordering potatoes, buckwheat & maple syrup for all of our tables in the winter….Elliott is seated by Corinne reading Sidney Smith's Memoirs & Letters to her….& they are both laughing at some of the bon mots. Mr. Robinson rises at four a.m. after his toilette, he makes a little fire in his room, boils his water & makes his tea & partakes of it with bread & butter, reads & then has prayers at 7 am for the farmer….He again has prayers for us at half past eight after which we breakfast. Our table is waited on by a young girl formerly Mrs. R's Sunday School schooler. Her little brother Willie follows in John Martin's wake in overhauls far too large for him…..Elliott has been unfortunate in the illness of his horse Jack who foundered the other evening after coming in from the ride….the poor old Horse has his two feet done up & in saw dust while the Vet (as D & E say) from Utica visits him….' Roosevelt concludes by sending her love to Hariott, Jessie, Linlie, Jimmie and Stuart. A letter of wonderful content and quite scarce as a result of Roosevelt's untimely death at the age of 48 from typhoid fever. Some light creasing and very minor age wear, otherwise VG          James Dunwoody Bulloch (1823-1901) American Naval Officer, half-brother of Martha Roosevelt. Kennet, two pages, oblong 8vo, Lancaster Gate, London, 18th November 1943. Scott announces 'What a delightful & surprising present. How perfectly beautifully it is woven' and continues 'Now you may think I am inventing the following, but it is perfectly true - At the beginning of the war I vowed to myself that I would buy no new clothes at all till the end of the war. However not long ago I broke my vow & bought a red leather coat. Now yesterday I went out to lunch (with Lord Woolton) & found I had absolutely nothing I could put on my head, which didn't look horrid with red leather - & I thought "Serves me right for breaking my vow!"However this morning comes the lovely scarf & I have tied it round my head (the length exactly right) & it looks perfectly right & very nice. I am so very grateful that anyone likes my work enough to take so much trouble as to weave my tartan for me'. Scott further asks 'I wonder whether you have heard from my son, yet, if you have not please forgive him, he has been having a very hectic life, at sea night after night....' Some very slight, minor traces of former mounting to the left edge of the first page, not affecting the text, otherwise VG In the present letter Scott refers to her second son, Wayland Young (1923-2009) 2nd Baron Kennet. British Writer & Politician. Young served in the Royal Navy during World War II from 1942-45 as an Ordinary Seaman and Sublieutenant.

With various instructions at the base noting that the message is a priority and most immediate and is not to be signalled. A couple of pencil annotations appear at the head and the foot of the page. Two file holes to the left edge and with some light overall creasing, about VGAn historically important Top Secret Cipher Message issued at the end of World War II announcing the arrest of Dönitz and the end of the Flensberg Government.Karl Dönitz (1891-1980) German Admiral who played a major role in the naval history of World War II. Dönitz succeeded Adolf Hitler as the Reichspräsident of the 'Flensberg Government' (2nd May - 23rd May 1945).OKW - the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht ('Supreme Command of the Armed Forces') was part of the command structure of the Wehrmacht (armed forces) of Germany during World War II. Created in 1938, the OKW had nominal oversight over the German Army, the Kriegsmarine (German navy) and the Luftwaffe (German air force).SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) - the headquarters of American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Commander of Allied forces in north west Europe, from late 1943 until the end of World War II. Eisenhower ordered General Rooks, G-3 of SHAEF, to establish the SHAEF Control Party at Flensburg. Its purpose was to impose the will of the Supreme Commander on OKW in the areas of Germany occupied by the Western Allies. General Rooks issued the orders, supervised their transmission through German command channels, and compiled information about the German command system through the collection and safeguarding of all OKW documents at FIensburg.Camp ASHCAN - the Central Continental Prisoner of War Enclosure No. 32, code-named Ashcan, an Allied prisoner-of-war camp in the Palace Hotel of Mondorf-les-Bains in Luxembourg during World War II. Operating from May to August 1945, it served as a processing station and interrogation centre for the 86 most prominent surviving Nazi leaders prior to their trial in Nuremberg, including Hermann Göring and Karl Dönitz. On the morning of 23 May 1945, General Rooks summoned Dönitz, Jodl, and von Friedeburg to the liner Patria. Here they were greeted by a large crowd of press reporters, alerted by speculation of a Control Party action and SHAEF correspondents leaving from Paris. On entering the ships' conference room, they found General Rooks who informed them that they had been summoned on instructions from General Eisenhower, who in agreement with the Soviet High Command, had decided the Acting German Government and OKW should be arrested. This officially ended the 'Flensburg Government'. Now as prisoners of war, and under guard, they were told to pack and were escorted to an awaiting aircraft. When asked by Rooks if he had any statement to make, Dönitz replied 'Any word would be superfluous'. Meanwhile, members of the government, unaware of the proceedings on the Patria, had gathered for their daily conference. Fully armed British soldiers burst into the room shouting 'Hands Up'. All the Germans were then strip searched for concealed weapons and documents. The arrests were intended to make the headlines, with over sixty reporters invited to record the scenes. In the New York Times of the 24th May, Drew Middleton wrote 'The Third Reich died today'. The American Diplomat Robert Murphy summed it up as thus, 'After the arrest of Grand Admiral Dönitz and his associates, not even a remnant remained of any German government. The conquerors of the Nazis were in complete control and the administration of Germany was their responsibility.' That struggle was about to begin.
