A George III Grand Tour specimen marble and mahogany side table, the marble Italian, 18th century, the mahogany stand circa 1780 and possibly by Gillows, the top incorporating one hundred and sixty four panels of various specimen marble and stone, including Lapis Lazuli, Rosso Barocco, and malachite, above a plain frieze with moulded edge, on square section legs surmounted by pierced spandrels, 86cm high, 126cm wide, 62cm deepFor a closely related example attributed to Gillows and with direct provenance to Mere Hall, Cheshire, see Christie's London, Important English Furniture, 1st July 2004, Lot 115 (£33,460)The restrained design, and the use of finely-figured mahogany, typifies the work of Gillows of Lancaster's 'antique' manner of the late 18th century. The Grand Tour in the late 18th century was the single most influential factor on the English gentleman's collecting taste and education. As with the table offered from Mere Hall (referred to above), it seems highly possible that the buyer of the Italian specimen marble top would consult a firm such as Gillows in regard to making a suitable table as a base. Condition Report: Well executed old repair to crack through the centre of the marble top. Metal metal bracing has been applied to the underside to help secure and filler has been applied to the sides and top to help disguised - see images. Bullock was commissioned by the British Government to supply furnishings for the exiled Napoleon's use at New Longwood House after his defeat at Waterloo. This lavish commission was due to the British being concerned of how their treatment of the defeated Emperor would be viewed by the global community.
