The Birth Of Jesus: A Rare 18th Century Dutch Bone Fan, the monture very simply gilded and pierced. The double paper leaf depicts three biblical scenes. To the left, Abraham bringing refreshments to three men seated at his table, these being angels. To the centre, Jesus at the well with the woman of Samaria, and to the right, Jacob in conflict with an angel. The verso is painted in soft blue with stone tablets which record the ten commandments, see Exodus 23, 20-24, 18. The text is in Old Dutch and is the beginning of the message of the angel of the Lord to the shepherds in the field, announcing the birth of Jesus. Lucas 2, 1-20. Above, the symbols of The Trinity, the eye contained within the triangle. Guard length 24cm Translation of the Dutch text kindly supplied to the previous owner by Drs F Hovinga Van Eijsden, the current President of the Fan Circle International. The gilding is dull, and missing in places. The two central sticks in the gorge are not original. The centre of the leaf above those sticks has been damaged and shortened, thus the bottom left corner of the script in Dutch on the verso is missing. There are other areas of the leaf which are either stained or have had restoration, best viewed from the verso.

Charlie Lucas (American/Alabama, b. 1951), "Climbing over the Fence to see the New World", oil on wood, initialed lower left, titled en verso, 27 3/4 in. x 15 1/4 in., framed. Provenance: Finley Collection. Exh.: "Soul Providers: African-American Art from the Finley Collection Original Paintings & Sculpture by Self-Taught Artists", The Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art, Biloxi, MS, Jan. 11 - Feb. 22, 2002; "Finley Collection", Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture, Natchez, MS, May 2009 - May 2013; "The John and Pam Finley Collection of African and Folk Art", University of Wyoming Art Museum, Laramie, WY, June 8 - Aug. 17, 2013. Note: Charlie Lucas was born in 1951 in Birmingham, Alabama as one of 14 children. His greatest artistic influence was his great-grandfather, Cain Jackson, a well-known blacksmith in the area. He introduced Lucas to the tools and materials that would “speak” to Lucas decades later. Lucas left school at the age of 14 and traveled in the southeastern United States working odd jobs until he suffered a serious back injury in 1984. After undergoing surgery and a difficult recovery, he began shaping and welding metal together to create sculptures of animals and people. In 1980, he also began painting using house paint on cardboard or plywood and found objects. The subjects of his works are often autobiographical, and his paintings and titles capture the viewer’s imagination. The painting offered here highlights Lucas’s use of bright colors and abstractions, bearing a striking resemblance to works by twentieth century artists Kandinsky and Miro.
