Two A.Ls.S., 1904 and n.d., the undated letter inviting Lucy to diner with Henry James – HOWELLS, W.D., novelist, friend of Henry James. Four A.L.s.S., 1904, one describing A Woman Alone as “a most uncommon study in temperaments”. With others from Walter H. Page (U.S. Ambassador). A.L.S., T.L.S. and part T.L.S., and A.L.S. from his wife, Alic 1918, William Lyon Phelps (Professors of English Literature at Yale), Two A.L.s.S., 1912 and 1916. BURNE-JONES, Sir EDWARD. (1833-98). Four autograph letters to Lucy Clifford, one signed in full, 1893, 2 signed with initials, n.d. (c. 1895), and one signed with self portrait (envelope postmarked 1895). 11 1/2 pp, 8vo. In the illustrated letter he thanks Lucy for sending him a copy of her book, “In a most unfair way – a most dishonourable way, I looked at the end to see if they married & were happy ever after…” – is it kind though to want to make me weep?”, with an ink drawing of a fat-cheeked baby in profile. With an A.L.S. from Sir Philip Burne-Jones, 1897, illustrated with self portrait at the easel, and two A.Ls.S. from Lady (Georgina) Burne-Jones, 1898 and 1905.
HARDY, THOMAS (1840-1928). Three A.Ls.S., 1894 and 1914, and an undated part T.L.S., to Lucy Clifford , from Max Gate and Pelham Crescent, 6pp., 8vo., two of them concerning arrangements for a visit; the longest (4pp., 1914) referring to a theatrical production of The Dynasts, and also offering advice about a play outline sent to him by Lucy. “I have not the vaguest idea of what effect it would have if written at length & staged …a play of anybody’s from Shakespeare downwards is more vivid when read than when acted… As to the central conception – that the Krupps, or a woman – Krupp, might bring peace to the world by controlling its ordnance – it is naturally attractive in itself, especially to me, but as the theme of a practical drama which has to draw people to a theatre & make them pay: well, I am in the dark altogether”. With two A.Ls.S., from Florence Hardy, about her husband’s health (1921) and replying to Lucy’s letter after his death (1928) (6)

With four printed letters, 1913, inviting subscriptions for the portrait, and letter of thanks from the subject with list of the 250 subscribers. (5) Of the original committee who set the scheme in motion to celebrate Henry James’s 70th birthday, Lucy Clifford’s name appears second, after J.M. Barrie, with Edmund Gosse, Edith Wharton and six others.
HUXLEY, THOMAS HENRY (1825-95) Six Autograph letters, the earliest, Dec. 1878, to W.K. Clifford, signed “Pater”, the remainder to Lucy, 1878, 1879, 1892, 1895 and n.d., four of them signed in full, the fifth signed “Pater”. 17pp., 8vo., with 4 envelopes. A cheerful, amusing series, from one of W.K. Clifford’s oldest friends. In the letter to W.K.C. he chides him, “What do you mean by going & being bad yesterday? Probably nothing but Christmas debauchery…” to Lucy he write about William’s health and arrangements for their travels. In 1892 (the year he was made a Privy Councillor) he writes, “It was known that the only peerage I would accept was a spiritual one…” With an A.L.S. from his son Leonard Huxley to Lucy, 1928 (7)

JAMES, WILLIAM (1842-1910) American philosopher, elder brother of Henry James. 2 A.Ls.S. to Lucy Clifford, 10pp., 8vo., 1883 and 1885 (with envelope) from Bolton Street, Piccadilly and Cambridge, Mass. respectively. In the first letter he comments on her story (Lost) describing it as “a very wonderful & beautiful thing…I doubt if ghost-life has ever been as intensely imagined.” and in 1889 he writes, “I shall not forget how familiar and old time a talk we had in that too short visit to which in your letter you allude”. With 2 A.Ls.S. from his son Harry, 1919 and in 1927 about his uncle Henry Jame’s letters deposited at Harvard; and an A.Ls.S from Margaret (daughter of William James), n.d., enclosing a quote from her father’s papers about Lost.
LOWELL, JAMES RUSSELL (1819-91), U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. 38 A.Ls.S. to Lucy Clifford, approx. 105pp., 8vo., many with envelopes, 1883 –89 and n.d. (the first letter is slightly defective with signature cut out), from Elmwood, Mass., Lowndes Square etc. A warm correspondence; they send each other their books and articles and in 1884 he writes, “You have now all the prose I have collected into volumes. I am really glad that you find something in them to like, for I have a worse opinion of myself than of most authors. (38)
STEPHEN, Sir Leslie (1832-1904). Three A.Ls.S. to William Clifford, 14pp., 8vo., from Hyde Park Gate South and Waterloo Place, 1877-79. Including his last letter to William sent to Madeira, with news of his visit to the Alps, and giving a critical review of his thoughts about Huxley’s article on Hume; with 19 further A.Ls.S. mostly to Lucy (one to Ethel and Alice), with drawings and one to Spot the dog from his dog Rob) with drawing, approx. 68 pp., 8vo. A charming series reflecting the close relationship between the two families, mentioning William Clifford’s entry in the D.N.B. (1885), and another announcing the birth of Thoby. With a carte-de-visite size photograph of Vanessa Stephen aged 4 months with her mother Julia 1879.
TYNDALL, JOHN (1820-93) Scientist. 4 A.Ls.S. to William Clifford, 8pp. , 8vo., from the Royal Institution of Great Britain, 1878-79 and n.d., forwarding manuscript for Clifford to read and in the final letter sent to Madeira, just before William's death he writes of "the public appreciation of your work and character". With two A.Ls.S. to Lucy, 1876 and 1877 and three A.Ls.S. from his wife Louisa, to the sale, 1879, 1893 and 1903 (9)

She greatly admired William Clifford, and on hearing that he was seriously ill she wrote, “…willingly, I would give my life for his”, and recommending a mountain in South America where “consumptive people live for years”.
