QUEEN ADELAIDE. Series of 29 ALsS, 113pp 8vo & 4to to Jane, Marchioness of Ely, 1830-1848. One letter incomplete and with signature cut away; another with signature cut away. Many of the earlier letters from Windsor Castle, later letters (after the death of William IV) from Bushey House. A fine affectionate correspondence between the Queen and her lady of the bedchamber. The letters from Windsor Castle contain much comment on the King, members of the Royal Family, political situation ('trust you will not suffer from the threatened disturbances'), Palace events etc. The first letter from Bushey House is a moving letter on the death of William IV (' I cannot yet quite comprehend the whole extent of my loss') and her move from Windsor Castle (' that beautiful and loved residence which is no longer alas mine'). But she is sustained by Lady Ely's friendship. In July 1837 she is upset by the Coronation festivities (' very painful to my feelings...have to expect nothing of the rest of my days'). In 1839 a visit to Windsor Castle at the invitation of Queen Victoria ('looking very well and seems very happy') brings back painful memories (' the memory of our beloved departed King is still shown in the hearts of his people'). Lady Ely had a lifetime of service to the Royal family and after Queen Adelaide's death in 1849 she became lady of the bedchamber to Queen Victoria. A few edge tears but generally in sound condition (folder)

Collection of material, 1907-15, relating to Lieutenant CE Fishbourne, surveyor on the Uganda railway extension and member of Churchill's party on his African journey. He was one of 'a gallant company of young officers with several of whom I made friendships only broken by the war, in which they lost their lives' (Edward Marsh: 'A number of people' page 156). The group photograph at page 128 of 'My African journey' includes Fishbourne. The collection comprises (1) photograph album containing about 120 photographs, various sizes, of Fishbourne's travel and work in Uganda, about 15 (possibly more) are of the journey with Churchill and his party. Including group photographs, shooting expedition (one of Churchill and the white rhinoceros) (see page 186 of 'My African Journey'). (2) Portrait photograph of Fishbourne in dress uniform (3) Two LS, each 2pp 8vo Aug 1908 from JEB Sealy Under- Secretary, Colonial Office to Churchill and Edward Marsh regarding Churchill's efforts to find suitable employment for Fishbourne. 'If his character is half as nice and interesting as his letter he must be an exceptional person. '...quite agree with what Winston says he is...that he ought to be taken care of and promoted as soon as possible'. The letters to Churchill also refer to Churchill's escape from a fire at Burley on the Hill where Churchill was staying for his brother's wedding. ('What a shame the things you were saving were inanimate. Had they only been live babies you would have been awarded a medal'). These letters were presumably passed on by Churchill and Marsh to Fishbourne to show that something was being done for him. (4)
