His letter of thanks of 23rd Feb. 1956, after his return to Malaya, a fortnight after the signing of the Independence Treaty in London, has an autograph postscript We never stop talking about you & the extreme cheeriness which you have always got for everyone. It will always remain in my memory, and to you Bunny I say thank you. The Tunku invited Miss Simmons to Malaya to witness the Proclamation of Independence on 31st August 1957. The following letters discuss political matters both home and abroad, and provide personal family insights. His letter of 8th March mentions the opposition of Indonesia to the Federation of Malaysia We are facing a difficult time with Indonesia and we are meeting it courageously and as calmly as possible. In this critical hour of our lives, we are fortunate in having... ... the support of Britain, Australia...[which] has given Sukarno second thoughts before he undertakes any expedition against us....... His letter of 4th June 1969 is written shortly after the race riots We are having a tough time in Malaysia where trouble broke out without any warning... ... violence broke out unprecedented in the history of this country. Within two or three hours nearly 100 people were killed... ... Tension is still high... ... Our friends from abroad have unfortunately exaggerated the incidents and have made monsters of me, Tun Razak and the Malay people... ... the people who really started the trouble were communists... ... the majority of whom happened to come from the Chinese race, and so the Malays took their revenge resulting in the loss of many innocent lives... .... 18 letters, 20-pages 4to or folio, on his official printed letter-heading, a number with autograph postscripts, together with an autograph postcard and a Christmas card.
