Original vintage advertising poster for the Polish State Folk Group Mazowsze featuring a striking design by renowned and influential Polish artist Waldemar ?wierzy (1931-2013) showing the figures of two folk dancers dressed in traditional looking like small dolls, set against a black background. Born in Katowice, Poland, he graduated from the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts in 1952. He was subsequently Professor in the University of Fine Arts in Pozna? from 1965 and Professor in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1994. In 1992 the government of Poland issued a postage stamp to honor one of his Cyrk posters, 'Clown with derby'. Swierzy is one of the Polish School of Posters' most prolific artists, having created over 2500 posters. He employed unusual concepts with a variety of techniques, frequently mirroring Polish social history from 1950s through 1980s, with a myriad of styles: folk art from the 50s, pop art from the 60s, portraits from the 70s, and TV images from the 80s. In addition, his Jazz Greats series of famous American jazz personalities became so well known that he reissued them in his later years as signed lithographs. The series includes: Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix, Charles Mingus and Charlie Parker, among others. The lithographs were editioned by S2Art. The first group, which came out in March 2003, were of Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie. King Oliver and Lester Young followed a few years later. Condition: Good condition, tears.. Country of printing: Poland, designer: Swierzy, size (cm): 97x67, year of printing: 1964.

Lot 25

JIMI HENDRIX - THE CRY OF LOVE - UK RED VINYL PRESSING (TRACK RECORDS - 2408 101). The one that was never supposed to exist! Here's the excruciatingly rare red vinyl 'factory custom pressing' of Jimi's last album The Cry Of Love. It is thought that just 5 copies were produced on red vinyl (the colour moreover a cerise pink), pressed to test dealer reaction to coloured vinyl with a view to marketing the Pink Fairies LP Never Never Land. The few copies that have surfaced over the years have contained the side 2 label 'The Best Of Bert Kaempfert' on Polydor, this copy is perhaps unique in that it contains the 'correct' Track labels both sides. This copy indeed plays 'correctly'... The record is in fantastic Ex+ condition - both playing surfaces show few markings indicating that this copy has been played sparingly, the Track labels are sharp and clean with just a couple of very light spindle marks. Matrix (machine stamped)/runout: 2408101 A//1 1 1 1 5 & 2408101 B//1 1 2 2 3. Housed with the original stock UK pressing sleeve in Ex condition.

Lot 87

The sleeve is in VG+ condition with a few light creases and some ringwear that is moreover noted on the reverse - there are no rips or tears.

Lot 207

‘….Stay Kool, Be Groovy….’      HENDRIX JIMI: (1942-1970) American Rock Guitarist & Singer. An excellent, rare vintage blue ink signature and inscription by Hendrix, 'To Michael, Stay Kool, Be Groovy, Jimi Hendrix', on a page contained in an autograph album. The album also features over thirty other signatures by various other popular musicians, a few television personalities, actors and sportsmen etc., including Cat Stevens (to the verso of the page signed by Hendrix), The Walker Brothers (Scott, John & Gary), The Californians (John O'Hara, Peter Abberley, Mick Brookes & Keith Evans), Engelbert Humperdinck, The Tremeloes (Chip Hawkes, Alan Blakley, Rick Westwood etc.), Marmalade (Dean Ford, Alan Whitehead, Graham Knight, Pat Fairley & Junior Campbell), The Settlers (Cindy Kent, Mike Jones, John Fyffe & Geoff Srdzinski), James Ellis, Julia Lockwood, John Noakes, Valerie Singleton, Tony Jacklin, Peter Oosterhuis etc. Some of the pages are multiple signed and a few of the less important signatures are on loosely inserted pieces or pieces laid down to the pages (a few tape stains etc.). Some of the pages are neatly annotated in the hand of a collector with various dates in 1967. A wonderful example of Hendrix's signature included in an original album alongside some of his contemporaries. Generally about VG  £2000-3000    Provenance: The present album is accompanied by a typed statement signed by the previous owner stating, in part, 'This autograph book has been my personal property since it was brand new in 1967 and has remained in my ownership ever since. As a nine year old boy at the time I was keen to obtain some autographs and I clearly remember my parents' neighbour offering to take it to his place of work, Newcastle City Hall, where he was on duty in a security role on the night of the now infamous Walker Brothers tour, visiting Newcastle on 21st April 1967 and featuring support bands The Californians, Engelbert Humperdinck, Cat Stevens and of course Jimi Hendrix. My autograph book was passed around backstage where it was signed by the Walker Brothers themselves, Engelbert and Cat Stevens. Quite clearly the best autograph of all is Jimi Hendrix himself, who signed for me a personal “To Michael, Stay Kool, Be Groovy, Jimi Hendrix”…..as a nine year old I can remember looking up Groovy in the dictionary and thought the spelling of Kool was indeed the most cool thing on earth…..'

Boyle Family Large Composition Mixed Media 145 x 144cm (57 x 56½ in.) Boyle Family is a group of collaborative artists based in London. The origin of the group can be dated to 1957 when Mark Boyle and Joan Hills met in Harrogate. After a period of working separately on their own pieces, the couple naturally moved towards collaboration, turning wherever they were living at the time into a studio. From a young age, Mark and Joan's children would also be involved around the studio, helping with exhibitions, planning trips and finalising hangings. Eventually this would evolve into invative and collaborative partnerships, t just within the family but with other artists, performers and musicians, including Jimi Hendrix. Earlier works tended to be exhibited as being by Mark Boyle in an attempt to confirm to the stereotype that most artists are solo males. However as their work became more widely kwn, and the artistic stereotype began to broaden, they began to exhibit as Mark Boyle & Joan Hills. w adults, their children Sebastian and Georgia also opted to remain part of the team and since 1985 the four artists have exhibited jointly as Boyle Family. Their work is largely characterised by including everything and anything as a potential subject: earth, air, fire and water; animals, vegetables, insects, human beings and societies but they are best kwn for their earth studies of which the present three lots are examples. These three dimensional casts of the surface of the earth record and document random sites with great accuracy. These works combine real material from the site: stones, dust, twigs etc., with paint and resins, preserving the form of the ground to make unique one-off pieces that suggest and offer new interpretations of the environment, combining a powerful conceptual framework with a strong and haunting physical and visual presence
