Total weight 14gms.
WW2 British RAF Medal group to Flight Lieutenant Vivian Phillips DSO. The medal group consists of his Distinguished Service Order in original case of issue which is maker marked "Garrard & Co Ltd", the order is stamped with award date of 1946 to the suspender, boxed RAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal named to "Flt. Lt V Phillips RAF" and 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal and War Medal which are mounted on a bar. Also included are a set of miniature medals of the same and a pair of miniature RAF Pilots wings in wire bullion thread from the Mess Dress uniform. In addition to the medals is an important scrapbook/journal entitled "A Wartime Log" kept by Ft Lt Phillips recording his time as a Prisoner of War in Stalag Luft 3 Sagen. The journal gives an account of his part in the "Great Escape". It begins with the loss of his aircraft, a Lockheed Ventura II, on May 3rd 1943, during "Operation Ramrod I6", the action in which he won his DSO and in which his Pilot, Squadron Leader Leonard Trent was awarded the Victoria Cross and goes on to cover his time in Sagan. The journal is filled with approx 50 drawings, cartoons and sketches done by other PoW's in the camp, many of which are done in watercolours. There are also several original poems all PoW life, etc. The book itself was printed by the War Prisoners Aid of the Canadian YMCA. There are also seven original photographs taken in the camp showing groups of British PoW's. He also lists those shot and mentions that the memorial service was censored by the Germans. In addition are three loose Kriegsgefangenenpost Postkartes all sent from Stalag Luft III Sagen, dated 15/9/43, 11/10/43 and 22/10/44. Plus four letters from researchers post war asking about the mission in which he won his DSO. Two Newspaper cuttings (one with photo) about the award of his DSO.

A talented cricketer who played in twelve first class matches between the 1913/14 and 1926/27 Seasons for the European's team in the Northern Punjab, West married Vera Violet Muriel van Reinfeld. His father, Charles Henry West (1859 Lahore-London 1946) joined the Indian (Imperial) Civil Service in 1876. In 1890 he was promoted to the important position of personal assistant to the Attorney General of India and appointed Assistant Secretary to the Government of India Army Department in 1906. He was the son of Charles Henry West (b1825) a Punjab merchant by his wife Agnes Charliana Lingard Murphy daughter of Charles Murphy, of the Survey of India Department.
