Callisto Piazza ( attr. ) 1500- 1561 Christ at the column oil on board 48,5 x 34,5 cm expertise autographed by emilio negro This small board is to consider an important discovery within the Lombard painting of the first half of the 16th century. According to Emilio Negro several contacts with artists of the period including Giovanni Agostino da Lodi, Dosso Dossi, Ludovico Mazzolino and Romanino. The combination of Piazza follows a precise stylistic path starting from a base of Leonardo clearly all three figures (the mist of the physiognomy of the Christ that remains well-defined, caricatured and traits of the two flagellatori) is filtered by the language of Romanino from which the Square was heavily influenced, together with that of Pordenone. This results in a Mannerist style painting calm but energetic tones in pictorial composition and use of light.Very interesting comparisons proposed by Emilio Negro (Visitation in the Church of Santa Maria in Calchera in Brescia, polyptych with stories of San Giovanni Battista in the Church of the Incoronata in Lodi), while reporting above all for smooth and firm strokes of the face of Christ, a strict comparison with a portrait of a gentleman, oil on canvas, cm. 96 x 86 conserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The board is in excellent condition both for the conditions that support for the pictorial film, with veils sol body of Christ largely intact.
