DELLA ROBBIA VASE of Art Nouveau influence,painted with stylised trees and plants to both sides, and with a turquoise and green ground. Impressed marks, DR and Ship, RB for Ruth Bare. *Della Robbia was founded in 1894 in Birkenhead and only ran for a number of years until it`s closure in 1901. The factory was very much part of the Arts and Crafts movement.
A Della Robbia style panel, decorated with the Virgin and child, and a similar relief-moulded plaque of a religious scholar, perhaps St Jerome, 19th / 20th century, 49cm max. (2) These plaques were removed from the Fulham residence of the community of St Katharine of Alexandria after it was bombed during the Second World War.

HAROLD STEWART RATHBONE FOR DELLA ROBBIA, BIRKENHEAD. `SEPIA`, A CIRCULAR DISHED CHARGER, DATED 1895. incised and painted terracotta, the central dished bowl incised with the head and shoulders profile of a girl, bearing the inscription `Sepia`, within a foliate border to the rim, incised and painted factory marks to the centre verso, incised marks to the rim verso `HSR/ DR/ -95`. 34.5cm across.
ELLEN MARY ROPE. DESIGN FOR A CHARGER, DATED 1899. watercolour, circular, stuck down, inscribed in pencil to the reverse `West Nursery Paper (or Poster) 1899 E.M. Rope`. 54cm diameter. Note; Ellen Mary Rope designed for the Della Robbia Pottery, Birkenhead, from 1886 until its closure in 1906 and so the present work would have been produced by her during this period. Her work was very much in the Arts and Crafts Movement tradition and was seen at each Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society exhibition from 1889. She showed panels for ceiling, wall, mantelpiece and nursery decoration and it may be that this design was an entry to such an exhibition..

Ellen Mary Rope (1855-1934) "The Nativity", polychrome plaster relief panel, 33cm by 58cm. This plaque was exhibited at The Williamson Art Gallery & Museum and H Blairman & Sons Ltd, 1997, catalogue No.48. Ellen Mary Rope was born into a large family at Grove Farm, Blaxhall, Suffolk. She studied drawing with philanthropist reformer Octavia Hill and at Ipswich School of Art. She became interested in sculpture while at the Slade School at University College London. She participated in the Arts & Crafts Society Exhibitions and began designing decorative arts for Della Robbia Pottery, Birkenhead from 1896.
