A Victorian teak folding campaign daybed, with a ratcheted back and seat, on removable turned legs, terminating in spoked brass castors, bearing a plaque for J Alderman, Inventor, Patentee & Manufacturer, 16 Soho Square, London, carved to the underneath L H HOPE, 186cm long John Alderman is listed in the London directories from 1860 as a maker of carriages, couches and invalid chairs
A 19th century mahogany daybed, with exposed cornucopia and foliate carved moulded showframe, with squab cushion and rollover ends, length approximately 288 cm, depth 87 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Having had a good look at the daybed, it is probably in fact mid 20th century. On first impressions it does look to be period but on closer inspection is clearly not. The daybed is structurally very sound. There is no movement at the joints. The only area of damage that we can see is to two of the paw feet. They have been broken and repaired, there is however no movement and the repair is sound and secure. There are some other minor scuffs and marks to the exposed showframe but no real issues. The upholstery other than being a little dusty is in generally very good condition with no significant fading. If the colour suits then it does not require recovering. Both sides of the piece are identical. The base appears to be sprung in the traditional manner with springs and webbing. There are no springs protruding from the underside and the base is firm and taut. We are not sure what the piece is stuffed with but it does feel firm and traditional, we cannot gain access to see.
