Follower of Hans Holbein Portrait of King Henry VIII (1491-1547) bust-length, in a fur-lined cloak and gold-brocade doublet, with a chain and feathered black hatinscribed 'Henricus Octavvs' (above the sitter)oil on panel33 x 26.5cmProvenance:Bonhams, London, 13th April 1999, lot 2, when acquired by the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)This bust-length portrait derives from the lost full-length image of the King by Holbein, which was part of a mural for Whitehall Palace executed in 1536-7. Based on the iconic images of Henry VIII which Holbein and his studio produced throughout the sitter’s lifetime, these depictions of Henry VIII became the sanctioned images of the court and were reproduced widely. They were intended to propagate the strength of the Tudor dynasty and the total authority of Henry VIII as King. Significantly, these images achieved this without the traditional symbolism of royal power such as a crown or sceptre, but instead through Henry VIII’s posture, facial expression and symbols of wealth, such as his costume and jewellery.The painting is executed in oil on a wooden panel support formed from a single oak board. The panel is in a good condition and is uniformly in plane. The thinly applied paint layers have developed a network of age cracks following the vertical woodgrain of the panel. These are slightly raised and vulnerable in some areas. There is extensive overpaint in the face covering wear and abrasion. There are also brushy areas of overpaint in the red background. The varnish has yellowed with age and no longer adequately saturates the paint layers below. There are scuffs and scratches across the surface.Stencil Christie's - PH456 Framed 50.5 x 44cm
