His interest in jewellery dates back to his teenage years when he made costume jewellery. In 1976 while travelling in Burma, della Valle bought his first precious gemstone, which began his career as a gemstone dealer. He continued to design jewellery, working for Fürst Jewellers in Vienna and collaborating with Bulgari, before launching his own jewellery brand in 1987. Della Valle’s work is most characterised by its lyrical use of colour and playful interpretations of nature. He says of his work “my designs are cheerful, never dramatic. I never forget that they are meant to bring joy, to beautify the wearer”.
