A LARGE SANCAI GLAZED 'BUDDHIST LION' CANDLEHOLDER, MING DYNASTY 明代三彩佛獅燭臺 Expert's note: This candleholder would have been originally made as a pair and placed on either side of an altar, the cylindrical receptacle supporting a temple candle. Evidence for candles made from whale fat in China dates back to the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE).China, 1368-1644. The caparisoned lion standing foursquare on a rectangular base, with bells and a tassel hung from the trappings, the mouth wide open in a roar showing its tongue and teeth, its back supporting a cylindrical candle holder issuing from the center of the cloth draped over its body. Finely glazed in classic 'Sancai' of amber, green, and a creamy off-white.Provenance: French trade.Condition: Good condition with old wear, traces of use and expected firing irregularities. Glaze flaking, small nicks, and shallow surface scratches. A SANCAI-GLAZED 'ELEPHANT' CANDLEHOLDER, MING DYNASTY 明代三彩太平有象燭臺China 15th-17th century. Standing foursquare on a rectangular base, the pachyderms trunk swung to one side, a flowing saddle blanket draping downward, its back supporting a central cylindrical candleholder extending as part of the caparison. The animal detailed with almond-shaped eyes, large ears, curved tusks, a long tail, and subtly carved wrinkles. The elephant's skin is glazed in a creamy gray with hues of pale green, its inner ears in amber, while its caparison, decorated with flanking lappets, is glazed emerald-green and amber.Provenance: From the private estate of Roland de la Moussaye, Paris, France. An old label to the base. Roland de la Moussaye (1932-2022) was a French scholar with broad interests and vast expertise. He studied ornithology and lepidopterology, writing several books on the subjects, and worked as a professor of French literature in Japan. He studied Chinese, Indonesian, and Malay, receiving a degree in Chinese from the Ecole des langues orientales, and was an avid collector of Chinese art. A pair of 19th century Derby style porcelain figures, musicians, 21 cm high, together with a seated cherub holding aloft a flower, and a further figure, a fruit seller holding a candle sconce, 23 cm.Qty: 4The candle holder sconce is a replacement that is made from some sort of composition, the figures left hand and leg has had old restoration, some chipping to boccage leaves as to be expected..The female Gardner's wife candleholder has had extensive old and crude repairs and old restoration and is also missing the candle sconce.The female musician has some restoration to the triangle she holds and this extends to her fingers,the base has a large void to the base as ever, the male counterpart has a restoration of a chip the edge of the cloak, the piccolo has been restored along with the feather crest of his hat. And the boccage below his left arm has been replaced.
