A Japanese carved boxwood okimono of an elderly woman seated upon a log, 19th century, dressed in long, flowing robes, her feet resting upon a small boulder, a large fungus to her left, 7½in. (19cm.) long, 4¾in. (12cm.) high. * Condition: Old, very well executed restoration to breaks on the front of the fungus cap. There is also a chip to the end of the tendril beneath the fungus - possibly a piece of carving is missing here. Otherwise good, with a lovely patina.

(2).Footnotes:清乾隆 御題詩《松陰橫琴》巧雕玉山子Provenance: an English private collection來源：英國私人收藏The inscription on the present boulder reads: 御製松陰橫琴抱琴松下來，獨坐聽流水。聲不在絲桐，卻在心與指。Which may be translated as:Imperially made 'Playing qin under the shade of pine trees'.Coming under the pine trees, I hold a qin in my arms.I sit alone listening to the sound of the flowing water.The sound does not come from the strings and wutong wood.But comes from my heart and fingers.The poem is published in book 13 of the 'Collected Imperial Poems' (御製詩初集卷十三). In the anthology it is recorded as being written in the Guihai cyclical year corresponding to 1743, when the Qianlong emperor inscribed it on a painting by Zhu Lunhan 朱倫瀚 (1680-1760), of a scholar playing the qin. The poem, like the carving, depicts a scholar playing the qin, attuning himself not only to the music but the nature of the cosmos. The sound of flowing water relates to the physical stream and sound of the water, but also the famous melody 'Flowing Waters' (流水) played by the famed qin player Bo Ya of the Eastern Zhou period, to his cherished friend Zi Qi, who understood and appreciated the meaning conveyed through the music. The names Bo Ya and 'Flowing Waters' thus came to be almost synonymous with the notion of intuitive understanding and deep friendship. Hence the term for a close friend in Chinese is zhiyin (知音), literally, 'someone who knows the sounds'. For the Qianlong emperor, an accomplished qin player himself, the musical instrument would not only have exemplified his mastery and guardianship of traditional Han Chinese literati culture, but also his understanding that music and governance in a Confucian context were related; a musician who understands harmony can bring harmony to the realm. The present lot belongs to a small group of jade boulders and screens which were carved with Imperial poems authored by the Qianlong emperor and which additionally relate to paintings - thus connecting the written word with pictorial and three-dimensional representation. (1925-2018)Major General Sir John Swinton began his military career in 1944 with the Scots Guards, rising in rank to Major General in 1976. He was also Brigadier of the Queen’s Body Guard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers) in 1977, and retired from Army life in 1979. With his strong military background, he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for Berwickshire in 1980 and Lord Lieutenant from 1989 to 2000. A high point of his tenure was escorting the Stone of Scone back to Scotland in 1996.The Swinton family history and ownership of land in Berwickshire can be traced to the early part of the 12th century, when Ernulf de Swinton received one of the first private charters recorded in Scotland which confirmed his property from David I of Scotland (1084-1153). This is one of two original charters of David I kept in the cartulary of Durham; both are to Ernulf and also refer to Ernulf’s father (Udard), grandfather (Liulf) and great-grandfather (Eadulf) as holding the land before him. This would make Eadulf the first landowner of Scotland whose ownership could be proved, and means that the Swinton family would by this hypothesis be one of only three (the two others being the Arden and Berkeley families) that could trace its unbroken land ownership and lineage to before the Norman Conquest, making it one of the oldest landed families in Britain.Kimmerghame itself was the site of an earlier house, the home of Sir Andrew Home in the 1730s. The lands and estate of Kimmerghame came into the ownership of the family of Swinton in 1776 when Archibald Swinton of Manderston married Henrietta Campbell of Blythswood in Glasgow. This older house was demolished and rebuilt in the early 1850s, the architect being the celebrated David Bryce, who employed some materials from the older house. Bryce’s Scots Baronial house was substantially damaged by fire in 1938 and only partially rebuilt. The family still retains Kimmerghame and its contents.Captain Archibald Swinton (1731-1804) went to India in the service of the East India Company as a surgeon. He reached Madras in 1752 and took part in the campaigns being waged between the French and English Companies for supremacy in the south. He also took part in an in expedition 1756-57 to Negrais in Burma. He reached eastern India for the first time in 1759 when he arrived at Ganjam in Orissa and from there went on to Calcutta. He also transferred from being a surgeon to an ensignship in the Company’s Bengal army.When Archibald Swinton left the Company’s service at the end of 1765, he took with him a letter from the Emperor to King George III asking for help to reseat him on the throne of his ancestors, since Clive would not do so unilaterally; Swinton took a munshi with him in case the answer should be written in Persian. * DAVID HOCKNEY OM CH RA (BRITISH b. 1937), ROCKY MOUNTAINS & TIRED INDIANS 1965 lithograph on paper for the Pop Art Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, September 13-December 15framed and under glass image size 59cm x 79cm, overall size 67cm x 87cm Note: The painting from this poster was painted at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1965, where the university campus is on the edge of the Rocky Mountains. However Hockney's studio had no windows, so he painted this imaginary picture instead. It is inspired entirely by pictures in magazines and romantic ideas of the 'Wild West'. The nearest 'Indians' are in fact at least three hundred miles from Boulder. The chair was included for compositional purposes, and to explain its being there Hockney called the Indians 'tired'. The striped mountains in the background were a light-hearted response to contemporary striped, abstract paintings by American artists.

A boulder opal brooch, the oval cabochon boulder opal, collet set to a two colour mount, with pin and roller catch, width of brooch 5.4cm Condition Report: Gros weight 41.42g.Brooch is unmarked but acid tested as approximately 18ct gold.Minor surface marks to mounting.

Four pairs of silver cufflinks by contemporary British silversmiths, comprising a handmade pair of floral design by Jessica Jue, London, 2017; a pair of wedge-shaped design by Rebecca Hill, London, 2014; a pair of foliate design by Mary Ann Simmons, 3cm long, all with hinged bar fittings, and a pair of driftwood and boulder design, Sheffield, maker CB, each inset with a red gem, to chain connections, together with two unmarked pairs of cufflinks, one of brushed, teardrop design with fixed fittings, the other designed with fish panels to chain connections (6pr)Condition Report: Gross weight approx. 75.2g. All cufflinks in good condition with only light surface scratching noted in places.
