A MASSIVE CHINESE IMPERIAL PALE CELADON JADE 'BIRTHDAY' BOULDER QIANLONG 1736-95 Carved in high relief with two figures carrying presents up a hill towards an open terrace amongst pine trees where two cranes look up towards the sky. To the side are three small caves, one with a pair of deer. The reverse is carved with further caves, all beneath stylised clouds. The stone with white and russet inclusions, and raised on a reticulated zitan stand carved with rocks, pine branches and various blossoms, the wood with copper-coloured speckles, 21cm. (2) Provenance: the collection of Lady Robertson (d.1977), purchased from John Sparks 17th January 1958 for £150 and thence by descent (recorded in the Sparks' archive). Cf. Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum, Jade 8, Qing Dynasty, p.154, no.117 for a related boulder, also depicting a birthday celebration.

A large polished labradorite boulder with rich colour play on front face, principally blue, green and gold; from Madagascar. 4.2 kg, 23cm (9"). From a historic ‘Victorian Museum’ collection; from the stock of Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd (1981-2014); formerly with Gregory, Bottley & Co. (1932-1981) and previously with J. R. Gregory & Co. (1898-1932); originally in the collection of the famous James Reynolds Gregory (1858-1898"). This item is part of a historic collection of fossils and minerals which has recently been reviewed by leading geological expert Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. [No Reserve] Extremely fine condition.
An Opal and Diamond Cluster Ring, an oval boulder opal within an undulating two tier border of round brilliant cut diamonds in white claw settings, to yellow knife edge shoulders on a plain polished shank, total estimated diamond weight 1.35 carat approximately, finger size H see illustration The ring is in good condition. It is not hallmarked or stamped but in our opinion would test as gold. The shank has two resizing beads. The opal measures 11.30mm x 8.23mm x 3.60mm approximately. The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; colour G/H, clarity VS2/SI1. Gross weight 7.4 grams. Condition Report made 17th February 2017.
AN UNUSUAL FINE QUALITY CHINESE HAN STYLE BRONZE MOUNTAIN CENSER & COVER, possibly early, the conical form cover cast with overlapping boulder petals decorated in relief with a variety of figures and mythical animals, the cover surmounted by a phoenix and revolving petal finial, the censer with a rim of cloud waves above an intricate frieze of figures and mythical animals in turn above a border of character inscriptions, the splayed foot with a border of stylised phoenix rising to a rotating four petal collar, 13.75in high overall.
APOLLO XVI: Signed colour 10 x 8 photograph by both John Young (Commander, the ninth man to walk on the Moon) and Charlie Duke (Lunar Module Pilot, the tenth man to walk on the Moon) individually, the image depicting the lower half of one of the astronauts, wearing their spacesuit, standing on the Moon close to a boulder and holding a piece of scientific apparatus in their hands. Signed by both Young and Duke in bold black inks with their names alone to clear areas at the base of the image. EX
A GOOD LARGE 19TH CENTURY CHINESE MING STYLE BRONZE CENSER OF DING FORM, together with a good quality fitted hardwood cover mounted with a boulder-form ivory finial, the censer with good patination, the sides cast in an archaic style with taotie masks between raised flanges, the interior side with archaic script, 8.75in wide at widest point & 8.1in diameter at rim & 9.4in high to rim & 11.2in high to top of handles.
Pakistan, Swat Valley, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive silver and lapis lazuli choker style torque necklace, the u-shaped neckpiece comprised of twisted silver rope-pattern and smooth wires, flanked by a pair of flower-shaped appliques that are bezel set with large, round cabochon, lapis lazuli stones of breathtaking blue hues with lovely light and dark grey inclusions, the silver petals surrounding each stone finely detailed with incised linear motifs, the inner ring-like surround with granulation that is mirrored on the triangular attachments at either end of the 'flowers'. Finally, the termini assume a quasi-serpentine form with incised linear (perhaps abstract snake skin) patterns at the bases and a pointed stylized 'head' at the end of the hook-shaped termini. A mesmerizing example set in a glass-fronted, blue velvet lined, wooden shadow box frame to be appreciated as a work of art. It could, however, be removed from the frame and taken to a jeweler to be fitted with a suspension chain for wearing. Central Asia, Tibet, 19th century CE. A large drum from a Tibetan Buddhist temple, with a hand-carved and painted wooden body. The wooden edges of the drum are decorated with different symbols, among them shells, mandalas, lotus flowers, and fantastic animals. These are intended to give good fortune. Stretched across the drum is a nice leather surface - this instrument still makes a low, booming sound! It was made to be used in religious ceremonies. Made of gilded and painted wood, this platform has an ornate form, with a flat panel, painted red, atop a gilded plinth; attached to that is an elaborately carved piece of wood that functions as a backdrop. This is heavily gilded, with a form suggesting three framed doorways with spires above each. Southeast Asia, Thailand, 19th century CE. A dusty red sandstone frieze showing a quintet of elephants in profile, each with trunks lifted, holding up balls of something that looks like vines or possibly celebratory pom poms. The elephants are festooned with decorative tassels and stand with front legs bent, leaning back onto their hind legs, as if about to rise up. This may once have been an architectural element of a temple, palace, or wealthy residence. The elephant has long symbolism in Thailand, often associated with royalty and even gracing their money, flags, and provincial seals at various times.
