Jo Sweeting Summer (Wild Head 1), Autumn (Wild Head 1), 2020 Ink and Printing Ink on Paper Signed versoq 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Jo Sweeting is a sculptor and letter carver, whose work is informed by the concept of 'shul', a marking which remains after the thing that has made it has passed. She works chiefly in British Limestone. Sweeting works as a printmaker, and produces her work as woodcuts, which are often very large works. She designed the frontispiece for Hetty Saunders' biography of J. A. Baker, My House of Sky , published by Little Toller in 2017 and has had images published in World of Interiors magazine. Jo is at present carving a large erratic boulder called Foundle. She is also working towards a large project in Devon in collaboration with Common Ground and the National Trust, supported by Robert Macfarlane, Chalk Cliff Trust. She enjoys working to commission."Sweeting is a specialist letter carver... Her lapidary art makes words tangible, and makes them last." Historian Alexandra Harris "I hold Jo's art in the highest regard. She is, unmistakably, among the handful of leading stone-carvers and sculptors in the country." Author Robert Macfarlane
Mark Schuler (American, B. 1951) "First Landing on Mars 1976" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c First Landing On Mars stamp issued November 24, 1989. America's Viking Space Program to Mars held the entire world in suspense. For almost a year, the sparkling Viking I spacecraft, followed closely by its identical twin, Viking II, winged toward Mars nearly half a billion miles away. For the scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, who were the mission planners, the suspense escalated when Viking entered orbit. Viking's approach photographs of the Martian surface had revealed disquieting geologic features where the spacecraft was scheduled to land. Etched tablelands and deep craters -- clear evidence that Mars had once seen water -- presented all kinds of landing difficulties. A rock only a foot high could puncture the electronics-laden belly of Viking's Lander. On July 20, 1976 at 12:47 a.m. Pasadena time -- seven years to the day after Apollo II's Eagle had landed on the moon -- flight controllers ordered the Viking Lander, an awkward looking bird about the size of a jeep, to separate from the Orbiter and begin a thirty-minute engine burn that would take it out of orbit. Then at 4:13 Mars time, the Lander touched down on a rocky, rolling Martian plain, just missing a large fatal boulder. It took nineteen minutes for the news to travel through space from Mars to JPL in Pasadena. Suddenly, wild whoops filled Mission Control. Within an hour, the Lander's first picture from Mars' surface began to form, one strip at a time ... and the first triumphant exploration of Mars had begun. Image Size: 12 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 20 in. Unframed. (B12183)
Jim Butcher (American, B. 1944) "Building a Snowman" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Snowman ATM stamp issued October 28, 1993. "On the front lawn rises that art form surely older than the Parthenon -- the snow man, complete with pipe and lumps of coal for eyes." The words of author Donald Culross Peattie vividly bring to mind an image familiar even to those who have never faced the challenge of creating such a wonderful character. Those fortunate enough to have experienced the thrill of building a snowman will recall the fun of rolling that first small ball of glistening crystals into a boulder much too big to handle. When that base was completed, construction moved along rather quickly, for the next two sections decreased in size. Once the body was complete, the young artist was then left with the task of bringing his creation to life! With a few well-placed pieces of coal, a bright orange carrot and an old top hat, the snowman took on a character of its own. And what a sense of achievement to see how all this hard labor had turned into such a fine lawn ornament! Sadly, this feeling of accomplishment -- and the snowman itself -- was often short-lived. For when the temperatures rose and the sunlight shone down upon it, the fragile snowman would quickly dissolve into a lonely, damp pile of coal, hat and carrot. Yet all was not lost. For the tale of Frosty the Snowman promises, he'll be back again some day. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 18 in. Unframed. (B07757)
A spinach-green jade 'twin fish' brush washerLate Qing DynastyThe flattened circular vessel with shallow rounded sides rising to a slightly lipped rim, the interior carved in low-relief with a pair of fish, the stone of a variegated olive-green tone with black flecks. 17cm (6 3/4in) diam.Footnotes:清晚期 碧玉雙魚洗Provenance: a European private collection來源:歐洲私人收藏This brush washer was fashioned from a spinach-green jade boulder of striking translucency and depth of colour, skilfully enhanced by the low-relief carving of two fish. The natural variegated hues of the stone were cleverly incorporated into the design, thus making the fish appear as if swimming in deep water. On this bowl the use of fish (yu 魚) represents abundance (yu 餘). Fish swimming in water is associated with the phrase ru yu de shui (like a fish getting to water) which can also represent a harmonious marriage yu shui he xie (agreeing like fish and water). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In 1969, Herbert Irving co-founded the company Sysco. Through hard work and dedication, the company was listed in 1970 and by 2009, Sysco was ranked number 204 in the Fortune 500 companies based on sales. Subsequently, Sysco grew to become one of the world's leading food product distribution company with sales of up to US$58 billion. This exceptional success brought with it great wealth to Florence and Herbert Irving. Their collecting interests encompassed all of the major cultures of East and South Asia and virtually every medium explored by Asian artists and craftsmen over five millennia. Their support of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York was also recognised through the numerous galleries that bear their names, in addition to funding the Florence and Herbert Irving Asian Wing in its entirety. This finely-carved boulder is a superb example of the sensitivity of the 18th century carvers in their use of the natural form of the stone to portray a literati-style landscape scene. During the Qianlong reign, the emperor requested that jade mountains, as well as plaques and panels with scenes of mountainous landscapes, take their artistic influence from the work of famous painters. The personal interest of the emperor, as well as the increased availability of large pieces of Khotan jade after the pacification of the area in 1759, prompted a proliferation of production of jade boulders of varying sizes exquisitely carved with delicate mountain scenes resembling literati landscape paintings. Compare the present carving to a group of jade mountains carved with landscape motifs in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Jadeware (III), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1996, nos.72-74.See also a similar but slightly smaller pale green jade boulder, Qianlong, which was sold at Christie's London, 10 November 2015, lot 55.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
