A pencil drawing of Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, inscribed EC Gaskell in memorium May 15th 1838, mounted in an oval mount with an ink inscription Mrs Gaskell drawing 1838, framed and glazed, 25x20cm, inscribed verso, Mrs EC Gaskell 1838 (by Miss J Adams?), Provenance: this picture was once in the collection of a Mr T Beswick a prominent coal merchant who lived at The Croft, Legh Road, Knutsford. Elizabeth Gaskell was born on 29th September 1810 in Chelsea, London, in her childhood she was sent away to live with her mothers sister Hannah Lumb in Knutsford, Cheshire, her famous novel Cranford was based on her early life experience of Knutsford, she later lived in Manchester where she married William Gaskell, she lived in Manchester for many years and was friends with some of the most famous authors of her time. This lot is accompanied by some research (illustrated)
