Charlotte Epton (1902-1970) at Leach Pottery Jug, circa 1927-1930 treacle glaze, the jug with incised bands of decoration impressed potter's and pottery seals 25.5cm high. Information: Charlotte Epton was a potter who worked with Bernard Leach in St. Ives between 1927 and 1930, and with Michael Cardew at the Winchcombe Pottery. A fire at the Leach Pottery meant most of her work from the St. Ives period was destroyed. She exhibited at the Beaux Arts Gallery in Bond Street in 1928. She was married to Edward Bawden after meeting at the Royal College of Art.
Michael Canney (1923-1999) - Abstract composition, inscribed with the artist's name verso, pencil and gouache, possibly on tinted paper, 4.5" x 4.25" - ** The artist was born in Falmouth, Cornwall in 1923 and studied extensively throughout the county, in the early 1940s, he encountered the primitive painter Alfred Wallis and 'The St. Ives School', including the artist Barbara Hepworth (with whom he worked in 1959), Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo and Bernard Leach. His work progressed through a variety of styles during his life from traditional landscapes to abstract works. He became curator of The Newlyn Art Gallery and was later invited by Paul Feiler to become a lecturer at The Royal West of England College of Art in Bristol. The artist eventually settled in Devizes, Wiltshire where he continued to paint and make constructions and reliefs. He has exhibited with The Redfern Gallery, in Cork Street, London

A tall and impressive Martin Brothers stoneware gourd vase by Edwin and Walter Martin, dated 1905 shouldered form, modelled in relief, with incised veins, glazed blue and green on a tan ground, incised 2 1905 Martin Bros London & Southall, 22cm. high Provenance Charles de Grunchy. De Grunchy was one time architect master at the Royal Academy Schools and is listed as a patron on the Martin Brothers.
