ROBERT CARVER (c.1730-c.1791) Extensive Landscape with figures angling on a lake under a castle ruin, oil on canvas, 29” (74cms) x 53” (135cms), with three mirror panels below, in a Georgian giltwood Trumeau mirror frame with egg and dart moulding and projecting corners each with a rosette, 56” (143cms) x 64” (163cms) overall. (1) Provenance: Originally in the collection at Westport House, Co. Mayo. According to a note pasted verso, ‘This picture formerly belonged to Mathew Scanderbeg De Rinzy ex Clobemon Hall, Co. Wexford, was purchased by me at the sale of his nephew Capt. Rizy, Castlebar, c.1866, Clobeman Hall is now the property of Mr. Dundas’. Born in Wexford, Ireland on 9 Dec 1836 to Mathew Thomas De Rinzy and Jane Richards Jessop. Matthew Scanderbeg married Henrietta Elizabeth Wallace and had 4 children. He passed away on 4 Feb 1874 in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada.
