Salt Water Angling in South Africa 12mo A quaint little volume, in pictorial boards, 315pp., listing the fish types found in Cape and Natal waters, and with many black and white illustrations/photographs. Book condition: very good condition, rebound and with new end-papers, edges trimmed, and new cloth spine. Standing 7” tall and 7” diameter, fluted bowl with ornate handles, front engraved “This Challenge Cup, Presented to the Nottn. Wellington Angling Society by Sir Henry Bromley Bart, Honorary President June 1897” and “Was won absolutely by F.W.K Wallis Esq, and re-presented to the Society June 1900” further engraved to rear “HOLDERS”. In brief, FWK Wallis Esq Seasons 1897 &8, through until 1905-6, being nine consecutive seasons, then W. Speed 1906/7. S.A Wallis 1908/9 & 2 others ending in 1915. Hallmarks; Lion Passant, Leopard (a) London 1896, TB into shield. Thomas Bradbury & Sons, Silversmiths and platers. London 1895 hallmark, Weight 33 oz. (940 grams) approx. Comes with two early b/w photographs mounted on card of Wallis fishing on a punt with boatman and on the river bank, an Angling Times Article May 8th 1959 by Bernard Venables re Nottingham anglers’ inc. Wallis and letter of COA from Wallis’s great grandson (the vendor). Arguably one of the greatest freshwater anglers, Wallis lent his name to various rods & reels manufactured by Hardy, Allcock and others and developed his unique casting style still used today by purists. REEL: Robertson of Glasgow presentation fly reel by Malloch, 2.5" diameter ebonite/brass with German silver rims, ivory handle, smooth constant check, face plate stamped "Robertson Maker Glasgow and engraved presented to Alex. MacPherson Esq., by the members of the Walton Angling Club Glasgow, 30th. March 1899", with accompanying letter from the Walton Angling Club 1981 detailing Alex MacPherson as secretary of the club 1887-1899 and various other related information, incl. "the reel was bought from Messrs` Robertson The Glasgow Fishing Tackle Dealers for 8 4shillings", quite a sum of money for those times.
