This amp is similar to one used when Rory played on the Jerry Lee Lewis album The Session...Recorded In London With Great Artists and as seen in photographs taken during the recording in January 1973.Rory also used his Fender Twin amp linked to his Vox AC30 (see lot 63) for the Irish Tour '74 album and associated tour.'I've always used an AC30, for twelve, fifteen years. But right now I'm using a Fender Twin, a 1955 model I got in the States: it's the one Holly and Cochran used to have, and it's really good. It means a slight change from the Vox...the Fender is a little on the clean side: it makes you work a little harder. It's nicer for the slide too, it's clearer.'- Rory Gallagher, Guitar magazine, 1973. I use a Hawk booster through that just to roughen it up a bit, or if it's a quiet number I plug straight in and keep the guitar clean sounding.'- Rory Gallagherwww.roryon.com/GP78.htmlAfter keyboard player Lou Martin joined the band, Rory found that Fender amps suited the sound of the band better than the Vox AC30s he had previously used. He had three Fender favourites, the Bassman, Twin and Concert, sometimes pairing two of these together or using one with an AC30. With the Fenders, he used a Hawk II Tonal Expander as he had used a Rangemaster Treble Booster with the AC30.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Rory Gallagher: A Vox AC30 Top Boost Amplifier,1960s, Serial no. 3195 on backplate, black tolex combo, with two 12in Crescendo speakers by Fane Acoustic Ltd., Vox stencilled to front, with footswitch and spare valves, in flight case with Rory Gallagher Band stencilled in white, flight case 31in (78.8cm) wide x 29in (73.7cm) high x 14 1/2in (36.8cm) deepFootnotes:This amp was purchased by Rory in 1970 from Sound City, London.Rory was a big fan of the AC30 and had several in his collection. Although he brought in various other amps over the years into his live rig, e.g. Fender, Marshall and Ampeg, an AC30 was invariably part of his setup. He first started using one in 1963, with the Fontana Showband, and it is arguably the amp most associated with him.'They are the most reliable amp...really, very loud, and solid - although they do need a little bit of something...like a treble booster, I reckon. Somebody worked out once that they give the closest to the true wattage; they give 28 watts of real power, whereas some other makes only give 55 that are supposed to be one hundred watts. And they have a certain arrogant kind of tone, particularly if you get a nice treble booster like a Rangemaster. You can get amazing sounds out of them. Anyway, The Shadows were using them, and that was an instant encouragement, an endorsement.' - Rory Gallagher, November 1974. www.roryon/gadget250.htmlPlease contact the dept for images of this amp being used on stage by Rory at the Lisdoonvarna Festival Ireland, 1983.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
