Keith Broomfield - Hawker "Hurricane I" (Rolls Royce "Merlin III") of No. 257 Squadron, Royal Air Force, 1940, signed in red pen by Group Captain Peter Wooldridge Townsend, CVO, DSO, DFC & Bar with the inscription ''43 & 86 Sqns 1939-41", framed, overall dimensions 52cm x 36cm Notes: Group Captain Townsend was a British Royal Air Force officer, flying ace, courtier and author. He was equerry to King George VI from 1944 to 1952 and held the same position for Queen Elizabeth II from 1952 to 1953. Townsend notably had a romance with Princess Margaret, the Queen's younger sister. He is known for assisting in shooting down the first German aircraft to fall on English soil in April 1940 and for being a highly capable Squadron Leader during the Battle of Britain flying Hawker Hurricanes.

Eduard-Maria Joseph Ritter von Schleich (9 August 1888 – 15 November 1947) Bavarian Flying Ace of the First World War, aka 'The Black Knight' an autographed and dated portrait postcard signed in dark fountain pen ink. The postcard shows von Schleich standing in a three-quarter length pose, wearing his military overcoat and cap. Published by Willi Sanke of Berlin during World War I, numbered 578 to the lower left-hand corner. Notes: Although Eduard von Schleich saw action at the front as a fighter pilot for only fourteen months of the First World War, he scored thirty-five victories including some doubles and triples. In addition, this German Ace became the leader of one of four Jagdgeschwaders ("Flying Circuses") in the German Air Service with a rank equal to von Richthofen. Such feats meant that Schleich was awarded the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) and the Iron Cross First & Second Class. Later, he became one of the most active former First World War pilots in Third Reich politics and Third Reich life. He became a General of the SS, the SA, and the Luftwaffe and was particularly active with the flying corps of the Hitlerjugend (Flieger-Hitler-Jugend).

War date S.P., 4 x 6 in., b/w, official A. Daehler postcard depicting Oesau in a chest up pose in uniform prominently displaying his Knights Cross, signed across his image. Fine condition.

WORLD WAR II SIGNED PRINT 'YELLOW FIVE' A limited edition World War II print, 26 x 32 in., titled: ‘Yellow 5’. The print depicts German ace, HORST PETZSCHLER (1921-2011), in his ME-109 G-10/R3 during his 20th victory against a Soviet B-2. At the bottom of the print is the signature of Petzschler, adding ‘10/19/51’, and the signature of the artist, DARBY PERRIN. Interestingly, the artist is also a pilot who once flew with the very consignor of this piece. In between the signatures the print has been marked ‘0964/1000’. The print has been tipped to poster board which bears a description and a few tidbits about Petzschler. Included with this lot is a D.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], a list of all Petzschler’s victories, signed by him at the bottom. Also included is a certificate of authenticity from Perrin. Fine condition.

('SIGHTED SUB, SANK SAME') DONALD F. MASON Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class Donald Francis Mason of Patrol Squadron Eighty Two (VP-82) was stationed at Argentia, Newfoundland. Flying a Lockheed PBO-1 Hudson, 28-year old Mason was flying daily patrols over 'Torpedo Alley' and on Jan. 28, 1942 spotted and bombed a German U-boat which he claimed left a trail of oil as it sank. He sent the triumphant signal 'Sighted sub sank same' which caught the attention of the press internationally. T.L.S. 1p. 4to. on Fleet Air Wing Two letterhead, June 13, 1952 mentioning postage for a book he was apparently to return to an admirer and adding that ace and Squadron Commander William G. Widhelm would sign a photo for the man as well. Fine.

ADOLF HITLER AND HERMANN GORING ADOLF HITLER ADOLF HITLER (1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. sm. folio, Bayreuth, July 27, 1938, a promotion document held in a presentation folder with an embossed gilt German national eagle on the cover. The promotion is for Major Ernst Mersmann-Munster to rank of Oberstleutnant, in part: '... I make these original discoveries in the expectation that the named person will fulfill his professional duties conscientiously, true to his oath of duty, and justify the trust placed in him by this promotion. At the same time I guarantee him my special protection...' Co-signed by HERMANN GORING (1893-1946), German politician who began his career as an ace in World War I, rose to become Hitler's right-hand man and head of the Luftwaffe, finally captured and committed suicide on the eve of his execution. Lightly toned throughout, else fine.

AMERICAN FIGHTER ACES (47) Fine lot of 47 cards signed by American aces, most from World War II with printed reproductions of period aircraft and bearing the legend: '5 DOWN AND GLORY'. Five was the minimum number of aircraft shot down to qualify as an ace. Most have more than five victories, such as JOHN MITCHELL, 16 kills; DEAN COSWELL, 10; L.E. 'TEX' HARRIS, 12; LEONARD 'KIT' CARSON, 18. Some aces give details of their military career and describe combat experience. Among them are HAROLD VITA; JOHN HOEFKER ('The Eyes of General Patton'), HOLLIS HILLS, and C.L. 'JACK' JONES who describes in an A.L.S.: 'I did not know at the time that I had shot down a top Japanese ace. I only knew that whoever he was, he was one crackerjack pilot' An attractive, remarkably comprehensive ensemble.

(1890 - 1973) American aviator and World War I ace credited with 26 kills, later president of Eastern Air Lines. T.L.S. ‘Eddie’ on his personal letterhead, 2pp. 4to., New York, 1963, sending a Christmas letter to a friend. In part: '...As we grow older the years seem to take on an accelerated pace for the longer we live the shorter they get...what have we accomplished to perpetuate the land of the free and the home of the brave...hope that the New Year will bring us the image of a man or men to choose as our new leader...My creed of such an image I title 'A Man'... A MAN - who has convictions with courage and character to put them into action...A MAN - who will respect States' Rights...A MAN - who believes in free enterprise and our form of government...Let us therefore dedicate our lives to the perpetuation of the American principles of Freedom with confidence....Let us acknowledge and be grateful for the blessings of freedom which God has given us...' Both pages have a crease at the top left corner, else fine.

JAMES MCCUDDEN (1895 - 1918) English flying ace of World War I and among the most highly decorated airmen in British military history. On July 9, 1918, McCudden was killed in a flying accident when his aircraft crashed following an engine failure. At his death he had achieved 57 aerial victories. Just under two-thirds of his victims can be identified by name since a substantial proportion of his 'kills' were made over Allied-held territory. A DOUBLE VICTORY COMBAT REPORT Very rare and fine content war-date D.S. 'J.B. McCudden', 1p. 4to., [France], Jan. 30, 1918, a report from a 'Special Mission' in which McCudden achieved two 'kills'. In part: '...over Anneux...[I] fired a short burst from both guns at 50 yards range, when pieces that looked like three ply fell off E.A., who turned over to the left and went down in a vertical dive emitting smoke, absolutely out of control. Flew on behind a Pfalz who did not see me, fired a short burst from both guns, when E.A. went down in a spiral dive and I last saw him still out of control...' Nicely signed in ink, also signed by a squadron captain. Trimmed at margins, else very good. These would be McCudden's 45th and 46th kills, less than a month before his death.

Ground troops tried to attack my SPAD and at last minute managed to take off and slip away... bullet holes in my ship...[I] sat on an iron stove cover which stopped several bullets from coming up through my seat mat... I consider Lt. David E. Putnam of 139 Sqdn. 2nd Pursuit Group, AEF, the greatest...', with signed photo; LEO KIMBALL Pioneer pilot, member Lafayette Escadrille, A.L.S., 1971 about a photo taken in 1912; RICHARD CHAMBERS I.S.P. in RFC uniform with many decorations; EDWARD P. CURTIS D.S.C., Croix de Guerre. Major General in WW II, T.L.S. March 22, 1966, mentions top pilots, Rickenbacker, Fonck, Richthofen and Billy Bishop; HILBERT L. SMITH 'Researcher, WW I Aviation Personnel', T.L.S., May 3, 1971, mentions ace Frederick Lord, meetings with German aces, aerial combat Sept. 16, 1918 near Metz; GERALD E. NASH Canadian ace, T.L.S., Feb. 14, 1968: 'On June 25, 1917, Mel Alexander, Raymond Collishaw [2nd ranking Canadian Ace]...were flying about 4,000 ft. over enemy territory through cloud. I looked down and saw two Ger. Albatross planes attacking two British R.E.8's... I found myself fighting Manfred Richthofen and Allenroder...I had had many encounters with the Red Circus prior to this dogfight. I was in a dogfight with the two Ger. aces. One would engage me in gun fight and the other would climb and shoot at me from above... one of the rudder control wires of my machine was shot... my machine gave out ...' Overall very good. 23 pieces.

SHOLTO DOUGLAS (A. W. BEAUCHAMP-PROCTOR COMBAT REPORT) SHOLTO DOUGLAS (1893 - 1969) Marshall of the R.A.F. After serving as a squadron commander during the First World War, he became Director of Staff Duties and then Assistant Chief of the Air Staff at the Air Ministry. During World War II, he served as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Fighter Command and Air Officer Commanding in Chief of RAF Middle East Command where he advocated Operation Accolade, a planned British amphibious assault on Rhodes and the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean Sea. Very rare World War I-date D.S. as Commanding Major of the 84 Squadron, 1p. large 4to., [France], Aug. 8, 1918, a 'Combats in the Air' report in which A.W.B. Proctor, Captain. documents the attack, and shooting down, of two enemy ballons. South African ace Capt. A. W. BEAUCHAMP-PROCTOR (1894-1921) South African member of the RFC, a recipient of the Victoria Cross who accumulated 54 'kills' by wars end, and was later killed in a training accident. In part: '...I observed 2 E. Balloons, altitude about 100 feet...I decided to attack...I opened fire at 100 yards and continued to fire until compelled to zoom the the balloon...I observed smoke curling up from the side of the balloon. Two minutes later the balloon burst into flames....' Signed by Douglas (also named in the combat report), at bottom as Major and Commander of 84 Squadron. Four file holes, lightly toned, else very good.

He later served in the post-war U.S. Air Force, killed in a jet trainer accident. Rare first day postal cover including an Iwo Jima commemorative stamp, honors the 'Armed Services' and canceled in Washington.Feb. 26, 1946,signed across the face. Fine.

GEORGE A. DAVIS (1920 - 1952) Highly decorated USAF fighter pilot and flying ace of World War II and the Korean War. Davis rose to the rank of major, and was promoted posthumously to lieutenant colonel and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in 'MiG Alley' during the latter war. He was the only flying ace of the United States to be killed in action in Korea. Rare first day postal cover honoring the U.S. Army, Washington, Sep. 28, 1945, signed across the face adding: 'USAF'. Fine.

(1918 - 2009) German fighter pilot and third highest ace with 275 'kills'. Signature on a first day postal cover honoring Franklin D. Roosevelt. Rall's signature is accompanied by nine others, three of whom were members of the Doolittle Raiders, including: WILLIAM M. BOWER (1917-2011) the last surviving pilot of the Doolittle Raid. There are also at least three signatures from members of the Flying Tigers, including ROBERT L. SCOTT (1908-2006). Fine collection of autographs.

Adolf Josef Ferdinand Galland (19 March 1912 – 9 February 1996) was a German Luftwaffe general and flying ace who served throughout the Second World War in Europe. On four occasions, he survived being shot down, and he was credited with 104 aerial victories, all of them against the Western Allies. Good condition. WWII Wing Commander Robert Stanford Tuck signed 6x4 black and white photo. Wing Commander Robert Roland Stanford Tuck, DSO, DFC and Two Bars, AFC (1 July 1916 – 5 May 1987) was a British fighter pilot, flying ace and test pilot. Tuck joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1935 and first engaged in combat during the Battle of France, over Dunkirk, claiming his first victories. In September 1940 he was promoted to squadron leader and commanded a Hawker Hurricane squadron. In 1941–1942, Tuck participated in fighter sweeps over northern France. On 28 January 1942, he was hit by anti-aircraft fire, was forced to land in France, and was taken prisoner. At the time of his capture, Tuck had claimed 29 enemy aircraft destroyed, two shared destroyed, six probably destroyed, six damaged and one shared damaged. Good condition. The Outstanding and Rare Great War Western Front Fighter Aces Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar Medal Group of Four to Captain Walter Alfred Southey 84 Squadron Who Was Credited With An Impressive 20 Victories Including 5 Enemy Balloons, Distinguished Flying Cross, GV on original horizontal ribbon with pin, in John Pinches case of issue. 2nd award bar fitted on separate length of diagonal ribbon, both unnamed as issued, 1914-15 Star medal, “6741 PTE. W.A. SOUTHEY R.FUS.”, British War and Victory medals, “CAPT. W.A. SOUTHEY R.A.F.”, in named card boxes of issue. Medals accompanied by two pin back sweetheart badges, R.F.C. and R.A.F. and a pair of great war period folding pilots flying goggles housed in the original case of issue. A fantastic group to an Ace commissioned from the ranks, one of only 88 first bars awarded between its inception in 1918 and the start of the Second World War. Born in South Africa on 29th April 1897 Walter Southey was aa apprentice in the timber trade living I Brockley, London when he enlisted as a Private in the 19th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (2nd Public Schools). He landed in France on 14th November 1915 and was commissioned as a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps in August 1916. After completing his flight training, he was appointed as a flying officer and confirmed in his rank on 12th February 1917. Initially serving in No. 48 Squadron and flying the Bristol F2 2-seater fighter he was wounded when he was shot down on 4th June 1917. Promoted to Lieutenant in February 1918 he returned to action in March when he joined No.84 Squadron flying the single seater fighter the S.E.5a. He claimed his first victory on 2nd May 1918 when he shot down an Albatross DV, with 19 more claims being made in the period up to 30th October 1918. His final tally included; 1 x Albatross D.V : 3 x Rumpler C: 1 x Fokker DR.1 : 8 x Fokker D.VII: 5 x Balloon : 2 x LVG.C. With his score of 5 enemy balloons, he is joint 10th in the table of British Empire ‘balloon busters’. On the evening of 25thJuly he was on patrol and attacked a Fokker biplane, but the poor weather meant he lost his bearings and he actually touched down at an aerodrome behind the German lines. Whilst running on the ground he was being fired on from all sides, realising he was behind enemy lines he rapidly took off and returned to his own airfield flying at 300 feet. 16 of his victories were claimed after this event. Moved to the unemployed list 9th March 1919 (L.G. 4th April 1919). Sadly, Walter Alfred Southey died on 17th April 1920 from a skull fracture following a motorcycle accident as he was travelling to work. He is buried in Ladywell Cemetery near Brockley, London. Distinguished Flying Cross, London Gazette 2nd November 1918 – “Lieut. (T/Capt) Walter Alfred Southey. A gallant and skilful officer. On the 9th August, observing a large body of enemy troops and artillery on a road, he descended to 50 feet and bombed them, causing heavy casualties: he then engaged them with machine gun fire, inflicting further loss and scattering them in all directions. He displays great courage in the air, having accounted for seven enemy aircraft.” Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross, London Gazette 8th February 1919 – “Lt (A/Capt) Walter Alfred Southey DFC (France) An officer of ready resource whose skilful leadership is of the greatest value to his squadron. Since 23rd August Captain Southey has destroyed five enemy kite balloons and three machines, while he has also driven down two aircraft completely out of control (D.F.C. gazetted 2nd November, 1918).”

Signature of Famous German Tank Commander Waffen-SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Michael Wittmann, the small ink signed signature which has been clipped from an original document, is mounted onto a page with a black and white image of Wittmann wearing his Knights Cross with Oakleaves and Swords. Michael Wittmann was made a hero of the Third Reich for his actions at the Battle of Villers-Bocage during the Normandy campaign, where he destroyed up to 14 allied tanks in his Tiger 1 tank. Later being killed in August 1944. Signatures of this famous Panzer ace are extremely rare to find.

RICKENBACKER EDDIE: (1890-1973) American fighter ace of World War I. T.L.S., Eddie Rickenbacker, one page, 8vo, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, 11th July 1966, to Miss Isabel Erickson. Rickenbacker writes in response to his correspondent's request for a reference for Todd G. Cole who was negotiating for an apartment and states, in part, 'If this was not a routine affair I am sure you would recognize that Mr. Todd G. Cole is Senior Vice President Finance and Administration of Eastern Air Lines, Inc., a three hundred million dollar plus corporation, which would be ample evidence to me as a businessman that he was the type with whom you would want to negotiate. I can assure you that Mr. Cole is a representative businessman, has a fine family and is a forthright, worthy citizen. You could do no better'. To the integral leaf appears Erickson's partially printed form letter to Rickenbacker on behalf of Douglas Gibbons - Hollyday & Ives Inc. dated 8th July 1966. VG

D.S., G H Bowman, as Major, Commanding 41 Squadron, one page, 4to, n.p., 31st May 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air) relating to Lieutenant William Claxton's victory in the shooting down of an enemy balloon over Neuf-Berquin and Le Doulieu, northern France, whilst serving with 41 Squadron, the narrative stating, in full, 'At 12.45pm., whilst on Offensive Patrol I observed 6 Enemy Balloons between Neuf Berquin and Doulieu. I dived on them and after having fired 128 rounds at one of them, saw smoke issuing from it and it was rapidly hauled down'. Signed ('W. G. Claxton') by Claxton and signed by Bowman at the foot. DOUGLAS WILLIAM SHOLTO (1893-1969) British Marshal of the Royal Air Force who served in both World War I and World War II. D.S., W S Douglas, as Major, Commanding 84 Squadron, one page, 4to, n.p., 15th September 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air) relating to Beauchamp-Proctor's 45th victory in the shooting down of an enemy Kite Balloon over Bellicourt, northern France, whilst serving with 84 Squadron, the narrative stating, in part, 'While on patrol I observed 9 Fokker Biplanes guarding about 5 Hostile Balloons. I waited until the E[nemy] A[ircraft] were at the furthest balloon, then dived over and engaged one of the nearest. Getting within 100 yards range, I opened fire with both guns, and continued to fire until forced to zoom the balloon. As I passed over, I observed balloon to be smoking in two places on top, and a few seconds afterwards balloon burst into flames….The E.A. then dived down and chased my formation back to the lines'. PARK KEITH: (1892-1975) New Zealand Air Chief Marshal, a flying ace of World War I and RAF Commander during World War II, playing an important role in the Battle of Britain. D.S., K. R. Park, Major, Commanding 48 Squadron, one page, 4to, n.p. 27th June 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air) relating to Lieutenant R. H. Little's victory in the destruction of an enemy aircraft over Lamotte, France, whilst serving with 48 Squadron, the narrative stating, in part, 'While on O[ffensive] P[atrol] over Lamotte in a formation of 10, we engaged two formations of E[nemy] A[ircraft], about ten in each. During the mixed fight that ensued, we discovered one E.A. well away from the others about 1000 ft. below us. We dived, putting in a burst of twenty rounds at about 200 yards range. The E.A. thereupon pulled up and turned towards us, climbing hard. We dived straight at him, putting in another burst of about 40 rounds……The E.A. thereupon fell over on its side and fell over into a slow spin, obviously out of control. We were unable to watch it long…….but when last seen this E.A. was still spinning slowly'. Signed by Park at the foot confirming one decisive victory. SMIK OTTO: (1922-1944) Czechoslovak fighter ace of World War II who became the highest scoring Slovak fighter ace in the RAF. Killed in Action when shot down over the Netherlands. Rare portion of a World War II date D.S., Smik, one page, small 8vo, n.p., n.d., evidently neatly clipped from a combat report, the narrative stating, in part, 'I was airbourne (sic) from Base at 21.25….I was at 5,000 feet when I saw Diver below me…..I dived and attacked it from port quarter and below, using cannon only and giving 2-second burst. I saw red flashes on the fuselage and Diver crashed near Ashford. I resumed patrol and…..saw a Diver at 2,000 ft…..Dived and made stern attack….giving finishing burst with cannon. Scored hits on fuselage and both wings flew off. Diver crashed N.E. of Battle. At 22.00 hours I was over channel at 4,000 ft. Saw Diver below…..Went down and fired 2-second burst M[achine] G[un]. Saw no strikes owing to heavy rain but Diver exploded and fell near Tenterden…..' Autographs of Smik are rare in any form as a result of his death at the age of 22.
