A large wartime teddy bear, early 20th century, unknown maker but in the style of Steiff, hump back, complete with photograph of the owner and pair of clogs. The bear and clogs were given to British soldier Thomas Matthews, who served with the Royal Artillery’s 62nd anti-tank regiment during the Second World War. His unit liberated the Dutch town of Raamsdonksveer in 1944. The bear was a gift from a school teacher he was billeted with after he risked his life to source coal to heat homes and water in the town. The clogs were given to him by a Raamsdonksveer shoemaker grateful for the Allies’ actions. The bear travelled in Mr Matthews’ tank for the duration of the war. He used it as a pillow during the Battle of the Bulge and the teddy was at the Allies’ Berlin Victory parade in 1945. After the war in 1946, the bear was given to Mr Matthews’ son. He has treasured it all his life.
