ATTRIBUTED TO A MEMBER OF THE GU FAMILY (17TH CENTURY)Deer in a LandscapeEmbroidery and ink on silk, hanging scroll 84cm (33 1/8in) high x 42cm (16 1/2in) wideFootnotes:Provenance From the collection of Liang Zhangju (1775-1849) (title slip)Spink & Son (by repute)鹿遊 綜合媒材絹本 立軸註:元人顧繡十鹿圖真跡。退庵居士题籤鈐印:露香園、青碧斋The technique of combining painting and embroidery reached its zenith in Suzhou during the late Ming and Kangxi periods and is closely associated with the artist Gu Shouqian and her family. They pioneered techniques including the underpainting of embroidered areas and the use of a new 'hairy stitch' technique to reduce unwanted effects of stitches on the silk embroidered ground. Here the techniques effectively bring to life the group of ten deer. For further examples of this technique, preserved from the Imperial collection see Masterpieces of Chinese silk tapestry and embroidery in the National Palace Museum, 1971, pl no 34 – 35. White metal case, marked to the back cover with a broad arrow, letter I, ‘G.S.MKI’ and the serial number 8173679. Φ Andrew Grima, a superb tourmaline and diamond brooch/pendant, circa 1971, of abstract design set with a large cross-section of a watermelon tourmaline crystal, to a textured 18ct gold mount accented with a line of brilliant-cut diamonds, measuring 6.2 x 6.7cm, signed Grima, maker's mark AG Ltd, British hallmark for London, 1971In September 1971, Andrew Grima launched Rock Revival, an exhibition of 100 new designs built around extraordinary specimens of uncut minerals, at his boutique on Jermyn Street in London. Invites to the exhibition played on the 'Rock' theme, and came in the shape of vinyl records, with a stick of rock candy reading Rock Revival through the cross section. The exhibition was a hit, with buyers including the sculptor Barbara Hepworth, and the intended transfer of the exhibition to Australia was delayed because it sold out so rapidly. Grima's imagination had clearly been captured, however - at short notice he flew to Zurich to source more stones for this Australian leg of the tour, and reportedly designed another entirely new collection at the buffet in Zurich airport, before flying back to London. The bold design of this brooch and its incorporation of such an impressive slice of watermelon tourmaline (which often appears in Grima's jewels), combined with the 1971 date, suggests that this astonishing jewel was made in conjunction with this seminal exhibition, which marked a creative zenith in Grima's extraordinary career.Cf.: William Grant, Andrew Grima: the Father of Modern Jewellery, Suffolk, 2020, p.154-155 for a discussion of Rock Revival, and p.156-163 for a selection of jewels from the exhibition
