*Mullikin (Mary Augusta, 1874-1964). Interior of a Chinese Courtyard, circa 1930s, gouache and black chalk on pale brown paper, signed to lower edge, 56 x 30.5 cm (22 x 12 ins), framed and glazed American painter Mary Augusta Mullikin trained at the Cincinnatti Art Academy, and afterwards studied in Paris under James McNeill Whistler and London under Walter Crane. She lived in China between 1920 and 1946, travelling extensively in China, Korea and Japan. She published several articles on China during the 1930s and 1940s, including An Artists' Party in China in The Studo, vol cx, no. 512, November 1935. (1)

The Morris print was exhibited in Julian Hartnoll's `Pre-Raphaelite Graphics` exhibition, March-April 1974, no.48. The four items were purchased by Ronald Pickvance from S. & K. An important 19th Century Arts & Crafts Fire Surround and Overmantel, possibly by W.B. Simpson & Son, the overmantel with carved decorative finials and large central mirror panel flanked by pillar supported shelves with mirror backs and gilt decoration, on a moulded shelf over a surround with decorative carved sides in relief depicting flowers, the frieze with seven colourful hand painted tiles by Minton & Co., depicting figures playing various instruments, and two similarly decorated standards, each inset with large tiles either side probably designed by Walter Crane, with a central carved marble inset, approx. 326cms (128")h x 183cms (72")w.Provenance: The Corcoran Family, (Wexford Free Press)
GORDON FORSYTH (1879-1952) FOR PILKINGTON'S TILE & POTTERY CO.'APOLLO', A MONUMENTAL LANCASTRIAN LUSTRE VASE, DATED 1909 decorated with a frieze of cockerels to the neck, and to the body with the figure of Apollo riding a chariot through the clouds pulled by six horses, reserved on a blue ground, bears inscription APOLLO, painted artist’s and date cyphers to the base, impressed factory monogram and marks 2471 / IX/ ENGLAND 54cm highProvenance: The Harriman Judd Collection of British Art Pottery, Sotheby’s, New York, 22 January 2001, lot 407Note: This impressive vase is one of the largest pieces ever produced by the factory in lustre glazes. Pilkington’s Tile & Pottery Company was founded in 1891 at Clifton, near Salford, Greater Manchester. William Burton, previously a chemist with Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, was employed as manager and guided the company through its early years until 1915. He was joined by his brother Joseph, and together they developed the glazes for which the company became famous. The first large exhibition of Pilkington's Lancastrian Pottery was held at the Graves Gallery in London in 1904, and two years later the first of the lustre wares were shown at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition in London. The firm employed some of the leading designers of the day for these special wares, including Lewis F. Day, C.F.A. Voysey and Walter Crane, as well as designs from their own decorators, including Richard Joyce, Gordon Forsyth and William S. Mycock. The firm was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1913, after which the range was known as Pilkington’s Royal Lancastrian.

Bernard Sickert (1862/63-1932) - River scene with shipping, a crane and factories nearby, possibly a scene on The Thames, pencil, charcoal and pastel on tinted paper, 11" x 15.5" ** The work has a black and white study of buildings and an archway on the reverse, possibly a fixed charcoal drawing or black and white reproduction Bernard Sickert was, like Walter, born in Munich and was the younger brother of Walter Richard Sickert, the sons of the artist Oswald Adelbert Sickert. The family moved to England in 1868 and his work was influenced by his father and by Whistler. He wrote a biography on Whistler in 1908 and became a member of The England Art Club, as well as the Allied Artist Association. He was, together with his older brother Walter, one of the group of ten who exhibited together as 'The London Impressionist' at The Goupil Gallery in 1889

Parker, 1879, seven colour wood-engraved illustrations, including one double-page, occasional light spotting, original pictorial wrappers, extremities a trifle worn in places, slim 4to A scarce musical edition of the well-loved fairy tale, intended to be easily performed by children as a "pleasing novelty in drawing-room performances, village concerts, &c." and handsomely illustrated by Walter Crane. This book appears to be a failed attempt to re-launch the Routledge Sixpenny and Shilling Picture Books, both series having come to an end in 1876. (1)

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) - Scottish novelist and poet - a hand written and signed letter on La Solitude Hyeres-Les-Palmers Var headed paper, dated Feb 18th 1884 and to Constantine Ionides. The letter begins with a three verse doggrel poem (possibly unpublished). The letter section at the bottom reads: 'My dear Sir, I have been very ill and am still painfully weak; hence it was easier to acknowledge your kind note in doggrel than in prose. Forgive the shattered, R.L. Stevenson. Alexander Constantine Ionides (1810-1890), was a Greek -British art collector and patron. He was a supporter of George Frederick Watts and later James Whistler, Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rosetti and others joined his circle. His son commissioned William Morris and Walter Crane to decorate their Holland Park home

Dear Mr Ionides, Would you feel inclined to represent Julius II Pont Max in my group in the 'Historical Procession' at our costume ball on May 1st? You know the costume in Raphael's portrait. It is dignified and ?. I hope you may see your way to acceding to my request, and I would try to get you some Swiss Guards. Perhaps your sons would fancy the costume? I enclose a circular giving particulars of the King. Mrs Ionides would make a good Madonna Lisa after the Leonardo portrait, if she would consent? With kind regards, very truly yours, Walter Crane'.Because of the date of the letter it is resumed that it is addressed to Alexander Constantine - son of Alexander Constantine Ionides (1810-1890), a Greek -British art collector and patron. He was a supporter of George Frederick Watts and later James Whistler, Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rosetti and others joined his circle. His son Alexander commissioned William Morris and Walter Crane to decorate their Holland Park home
