GARNET RUSKIN WOLSELEY (1884-1967) PORTRAIT OF JEAN KENT AT THE WINDMILL THEATRE Signed, oil on canvas 35 x 29cm. Provenance: A gift in lieu of rent from the artist to the vendor's father. Wolseley was the gentleman's tenant in Chelsea. The sitter, apparently depicted at the age of sixteen, was born Jean Carr in 1921 and became a dancer at The Windmill Theatre in 1934 on a weekly wage of £2. It took a bizarre role as Max Miller's stooge in the stage review Apple Sauce in the late 1930's to raise her profile enough to go into films and she went on to make 37 movies with a golden period in the late 1940's when she appeared in 18 films in just five years. Latterly, she appeared as love interest for both Albert and Harold in Galton and Simpson's Steptoe and Son in the early 1970's and made her last film, Shout at the Devil, in 1976. ++ Good condition

Alexandra Exter 1884-1949 the bridge signed in Latin l.r. oil on canvas 116 by 73cm.45.5 by 28.75in. Provenance Mrs. Stohl the nurse of the artist; Bought from Mrs. Stohl by the present owner in the early 1980s Exter was neither a Cubist or Futurist or Constructivist or Suprematist or Purist and there lies her deep originality: she made use of these methods to further her research and surpassed them all.' Jean Chauvelin. Alexandra Exter was an artist of many disciplines spanning painting sculpture book illustration and set design. During her studies in Paris she befriended some of the leading figures of the European Avant-garde such as Pablo Picasso Sonia Delaunay Fernand Leger and Max Jacob. ÊExter herself became pivotal in the transfer of Western theories on Cubism and Futurism to Russia and from 1921-24 she taught colour workshops at the Higher Artistic-Technical Workshop (VkhuTeMas). As a result of her work for the Kamernyi Theatre Moscow she to the fore as one of theatre's most innovative designers. With its strong cubist influences and architectural details the offered lot shares many similarities with Exter's compositions from the 1930s and 1940s. Sir Eduardo Paolozzi 1924-2005 naked head resin height 14cm; 5.5in. (2) Naked Head relates to Paolozzi's commission for a public monument outside Euston Station London which he named after the German theatre director Erwin Piscator. The idea for it originated from the shape of a motorbike engine and this form is clearly seen in the present work. Paolozzi intended workers in the building above to look down on the sculpture and therefore the 'roof' of the sculpture is also crucial to the overall effect. In his final piece placed in situ in 1981 the details of the motorbike engine seen in the present work have evolved into a more organic form. To be sold together with Naked Head signed and dated 1978 plaster by the same hand.
