Description
*James (Henry, 1843-1916). Two autograph letters signed, Lamb House, Rye, Sussex, 10th December 1907 (?), and 3 Place des Etats-Unis, Paris, 28th April [1908?], both to the Playwright St. John Hankin, the first thanking him for his letter and saying how sorry he is to hear of his distress and hoping that a cast will be found speedily, 'Though Droitwich in December sounds a little dark & dreary', continuing to relate a theatre experience where he was escorted to the back row in the upper gallery 'Whence I looked down, as to the bottom of a well', from where he could hear nothing and only see the tops of people's heads, 'I took my way down the interminible staircase again & departed. I was very sorry, for it was all to see "Waste [?]"', and therefore regretting he is unable to give any impression of G.B.'s play, continuing in the same vein, the second letter partially concerning his discreet polite approval of a Garnett play and confiding to St. John Hankin what he really felt, both letters with James finishing and signing the letter sideways across the top of the first page, both four pages, 4to/8vo (2)
