Lot 69

United Kingdom of Great Blessings and Joyland, an entirely hand painted Christmas and New Year card in the likeness of a Treasury £1, dated Christmas 1924, serial number 1925, signature of the artist, Alexine Thorpe, with imagery including a turkey, sausages and a Christmas pudding on the obverse and Father Christmas in a wheeled sled powered, seemingly, by Shell Motor Spirit, on reverse, truly beautiful and a very touching item, very fine and unique £150-£200 --- Alexine Thorpe (born Alexine Sara Tinne Berthon, born 1865) is listed in the 1911 census as a miniature painter and retired concert singer in Selsey, near Chichester, and was clearly an artist of some skill. This meticulously crafted and well imagined Christmas note is both charming and brilliantly executed. She died in 1935. Alexine came from a remarkable family, with her sister, Ellen Margaret Tinne Berthon M.B. (London), being amongst the first women to gain a full medical degree at the Royal Free University in London. She became an assistant physician in Clapham Maternity Hospital at a time when this was unheard of for a woman.

A large and impressive framed, well-executed but apparently unsigned early 19th century oil painting on canvas laid on board very ably portraying an atmospheric coastal scene; possibly on the Cornish coast, near a cove with a building silhouetted on a promontory. A timber cargo vessel is moored with men approaching in a long-boat as a team of men manhandle a cargo of barrels from a horse-drawn sled on the shore whilst several sailing vessels with fully unfurled sails struggle in the powerful onshore wind. The sky has a distinctly stormy appearance but a clearing between the dark clouds reveals billowing cumulus clouds and a sky of blue. The perspective is excellent and the roughness of the ocean is very well captured by the artist. The picture would benefit from cleaning/restoration. 39 13/16 x 51 3/16" (93.5 cm x 130 cm) approximately.

Historically Important British Officers Sword Belonging to Arctic Explorer Belgrave Edward Sutton Ninnis, Who Was Lost on Douglas Mawson’s 1911 Australasian Antarctic Expedition on 14th December 1912, Edward 7th 1897 pattern Infantry officer’s sword, regulation blade supplied by E GREEN LONDON, etched with royal ciphers, scrolls and B.E.S.N. 3rd April 1908, regulation plated guard, wire bound fish skin covered grip, in a replated scabbard. Blade 82cms. Good condition. Belgrave Edward Sutton Ninnis was the son of British arctic explorer Belgrave Ninnis (1837–1922), Inspector Surgeon General of the Royal Navy and member of Captain Sir George Nares' British Arctic Expedition of 1875–1876. Following the fame he achieved on Ernest Shackleton's 1907 Nimrod Expedition to Antarctica, Douglas Mawson travelled to England in early 1910 to raise interest and sponsorship for an Australian Expedition focussed on scientific outcomes. On that trip he purchased the whaler SY Aurora and in London he loaded it with the many items of specialist equipment he was able to obtain there and 48 sledging dogs procured from Greenland. Belgrave Ninnis joined the Expedition in London as a minder of the Greenland dogs, and sailed with the Aurora on its voyage from London to Sydney commanded by Captain John King Davis. On the trip Ninnis formed a firm friendship with Dr. Xavier Mertz, a Swiss mountaineer who joined the Expedition in London and who was also appointed to handle the dogs. Ninnis was in the 36-man party who set sail from Hobart on 2 December 1911. A base was built at Macquarie Island and a small party of five men were deployed to man a radio relay station and to conduct research. Ninnis landed in Antarctica with the main party Commonwealth Bay on 8 January 1912, and established the Main Base. The summer was spent building a hut at Cape Denison for the 18 man Adelie Land base party to winter in. Ninnis was part of the three-man sledging team, the Far Eastern Party, with Mawson and Mertz who headed east on 10 November 1912 to survey King George V Land. After three weeks of excellent progress the party was crossing the Ninnis Glacier, when Ninnis fell through a snow-covered crevasse. Mertz had skied over the crevasse lid, Mawson had been on his sled with his weight dispersed but Ninnis was jogging beside the second sled and his body weight is likely to have breached the lid. Six dogs, most of the party's rations, their tent and other essential supplies disappeared into a massive crevasse 480 km east of the main base. Mertz and Mawson spotted one dead and one injured dog on a ledge 46 metres (151 ft) down but Ninnis was not seen again. Sold with a folder of photocopied research.

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "American Bison" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for the Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked January 29, 1984. Born on the golden grass of the prairies, the spirited Bison calf runs with a species that almost vanished from the earth. Sixty million strong, the North American Bison were once the greatest spectacle of herd animals in the world. The ground rumbled and great clouds of swirling dust filled the air when these thundering monarchs stampeded across the prairies. Large, hump-backed and sporting a dark, shaggy fur coat, the Bison provided the Indian tribes of the West with everything from food to sled runners. As civilization pushed farther west, however, the Bison were slaughtered by the millions ... and this great animal was brought to the edge of extinction. Today, through conservation efforts the North American Bison is protected on game reserves and their numbers are increasing. The tawny calves of these great mammals are born in May and June of each year, nine months after the mating season. The young bulls seem to love the freedom of youth and run and buck with delight. When the first cold hints of winter blow across the plains, the young Bison are already showing signs of the traditional hump above the shoulders and small crescent horns have begun to show. The herds will roam the plains during the winter months in search of food and shelter. When these cold harsh winds give way to gentle spring breezes, the playful calves will have nearly reached maturity. Image Size: 10.75 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 20 x 21.25 in. Unframed. (B08522)
