Binns, the story of the origin of the name comes from John Thorneloe, one of the original partners in The Worcester Porcelain Company, who went to Mullion in Cornwall to search for soapstone, finding no accommodation, he was invited to stay with Renatus Kempthorne, a local gentleman who would accept no payment for several weeks. In return Thorneloe is said to have had a special service made and sent to him using the soaprock he procured. A nice story, probably based on some facts. Condition Report: Light wear to decoration. Minor nibbles to footrim of cup.

A Worcester Fan pattern saucer dish, painted with colourful garlands of flowers in fan shaped cartouches, flanked by smaller flower garland roundels, reserved on a powder blue ground with scattered gilt flowers, red crescent mark, c.1765Vendor's Note. The Red Crescent mark means a service which has been commissioned. Powder blue was a Chinese invention used on Delftware, cobalt oxide could be applied to unglazed surface of a vessel in the form of powder blown on through a tube with gauze at one end. The fine powder would adhere to some kind of oil painted on the porcelain. I believe it would have been difficult to do, it also accounts for the variation of some of the blues, leading to a variety of shades. Condition Report: Good condition. Light wear to gilding. Touches of spitting.

A Worcester Fence pattern saucer, printed in underglaze blue with fence, chrysanthemums and two birds in flight, tram line border, 11.5cm diam, crescent mark with E; another, smaller, 10.5cm diam, Man in the Moon, crescent mark, c.1765 Vendor Note. It has been suggested that the man in the moon was a whimsical joke done by the engraver but stopped as soon as spotted, personally I think it's a nice touch. Condition Report: Good condition.

Scotin and is illustrated by Dacier and Vauflart, Les Graveurs de Watteau, 1929. Similar prints are found on Pennington's Liverpool and on Birmingham enamels. A similar design in sepia and black and white can be found in Zorensky Collection, Part III, Bonhams, P.103; Watney Collection, Part III, Lot 989 Condition Report: The saucer with very minor wear. Slight internal rim blemish.
