HMS Royal George: a rare novelty Prattware pipe, circa 1782-1800Modelled as a ship of the line with three decks complete with rigging, incised 'Royal Gerge [sic]', a male 'figurehead' with a moulded crown forming the bowl of the pipe, a hollow leg above the rudder serving as the mouthpiece, picked out in brown, ochre, blue and green, 19.2cm longFootnotes:HMS Royal George was the largest warship in the world at the time of her launch in 1756 and had an illustrious battle career but is best known for her tragic sinking whilst anchored off Portsmouth on 29 August 1782 and the subsequent loss of nearly 900 lives. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Three Prattware jugs, circa 1800Moulded in relief and picked out in colours, the largest with profile portraits of 'ADMIREL DUNCAN' and 'CAPTAIN TROLOP [sic]' between ships and a figure of hope, 19.4cm high, the second with a half-length portraits of 'LORD GARVIS [sic]' the banner across his legs titled to one side of the jug only, 13.2cm high, the third example with profile portraits of 'Admiral Nelson' and 'Adml Collingwood', 12.8cm high (3)Footnotes:A similar example to the largest, first-mentioned jug is illustrated by John and Griselda Lewis, Pratt Ware (1984), p.147, where it is attributed to one of the Scottish East Coast potteries. Captain Henry Trollope had an active role in the American Revolutionary War but is perhaps better known for his convincing a number of crews (by threatening open-fire) to return to duty during the turbulent Nore Mutiny in March and April 1797. He was also granted the Order of the Bath for his command under Admiral Duncan at Camperdown in October 1797.The title for Collingwood inscribed in brown on the neck of the smallest jug obscures the moulded title for 'Captain Berry' underneath. Seemingly, the manufacturers felt the portraits were suitably interchangeable and it may be that after Trafalgar, they wanted to commemorate the two men, Nelson and Collingwood, who led each column in the infamous attack without having to design an updated mould. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Naïve misspellings appear regularly in commemorative pottery of this type. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
