A RUBY AND GOLD  BANGLE, BY GAY FRÈRES, CIRCA 1970Each terminal modelled as a lion's head with circular-cut ruby eyes, the bangle with twisted gold and horn (or possibly elephant's hair) detailing, mounted in 18K gold, with maker's mark for 'GF' for Gay Frères, French assay marks, inner length approximately 15cm, inner diameter 5.5cm, total gross weight approx. 73.30gGay Frères was founded in 1835, by Jean-Pierre Gay and Gaspard Tissot and it would go on to become one of the most important watch bracelet makers in the world of fine jewellery. It’s origins were in the production of specialised handmade gold chains, often for use in pocket watches. As tastes changed the company also adapted and in the 20th century they began to design high quality bracelets for wristwatches. Their work was sought after by many high-end watch brands, such as Patek Phillippe, Vacheron and Rolex, the latter of which bought the company in 1998. Up to that point Gay Frères had remained a strongly family associated brand, with descendants of Jean-Pierre, brothers Jacques Hubert and Jean-Francois Gay running the company in the 1970s.Despite the horology led focus of the brand, their output has always included beautiful examples of artisan jewellery. The work they made in the 1960s and 70s is highly sought after by collectors in the current market. Their expertise in making complex chains and cuffs combined with a strong understanding and craftsmanship in working with gems and precious stones, made them highly sought after by houses such as Van Cleef & Arpels and Hermès.  Their designs also incorporate different materials such as ebony and ivory as well as employing the decorative technique of enamelling. This dual aspect of their work has been an important trademark of the company and has ensured their continued relevance and success in the world of fine jewellery.Condition Report: Clasp secure - twist mechanism to openNormal signs of wear, overall in good conditionTotal gross weight approx. 73.30g

Exhibit P18.According to the exhibition, the movement came from Joseph Preston, who was working out of Prescot. Joseph Preston were well-known watch and chronometer movement manufacturers and their mark 'J.P.' was considered a hallmark of quality. Although based in Prescot, they formed a key link in the national supply chain that saw parts made largely in the North of England, and the West Midlands and assembled into a rough movement, before being sent to London for finishing and sale. A sizeable part of Preston's client base was in London, and to a lesser extent, Coventry. The firm was founded by Joseph Preston in 1829 at 19 Eccleston Street Prescot, and renamed 'Joseph Preston and Sons' in 1840, when his sons Thomas and Joseph began working there full time. In 1891, at the age of 16, the Prestons' nephew, Harry Pybus, began working in the shop. He worked at, and learnt, the twenty separate trades employed in the shop, that resulted in a complete, unfinished watch or chronometer movement. Pybus took over the shop on his uncles' death, though he kept the name 'Joseph Preston and Sons'. During the second world war, it was noted that, having no other employees, Pybus managed to make several two-day chronometer movements entirely on his own, in a shop which lacked electricity. He would run the shop for nearly sixty years, until his death in 1952; anecdotally he was said to be in the middle of cutting watch escape pinions when he died. In his obituary, he was hailed as 'the last of the old Prescot watchmakers'. The shop was demolished shortly after, making Joseph Preston one of the last independent horological manufacturers to shut in Prescot, and area long famed for supplying high-quality movements. The firm supplied a large range of movements to a varied customer base, which included Mercer, Kullberg, and even Patek Phillipe. William crisp was another regular customer. The Hartnup balance was developed by John Hartnup, the first director and founder of the Siderial Liverpool Observatory, established in 1843. The Hartnup balance corrects for middle-temperature error in chronometers. The middle temperature error refers to the error produced in standard compensation balances: The balance is designed to account for an extreme high temperature error and an extreme low temperature error, however, between this range the chronometer gains a bit, and loses a bit when exposed to temperatures outside this range. This means that when a chronometer is exposed to a wide range of temperatures the rate will change much more then when the temperature exposure range is small.Hartnup's solution, likely created around 1847 and actually made by William Shepherd of 13 Bath Street Liverpool, involved laminated cross-bars connecting a fairly standard compensation rim; the outer rim would compensate for extremes and the inner cross-bars would moderate the middle temperature. Hartnup did not patent this balance, partially as he was eager to see it taken up by many makers as an improvement in timekeeping generally, but also because he didn't think that, as a Director of the Observatory, he could profit from work done during his tenure. The balance was never widely adopted, not least because it took twice as long to manufacture as a standard compensation balance did, meaning that chronometers with a Hartnup balance are quite uncommon. The business was an immediate success and by 1905 the company employed 750 employees and was producing 450,000 watches.During the late 1920s, it designed radical new styles of timepiece such as this example, “La Captive”, and a 'Belt-Watch', both of which were considered completely new concepts. By this time, there were already five Tavannes Watch Company factories in Switzerland and it had become the fourth largest watch manufacturer in the world, producing over 4,000 watches a day. After the Second World War, and with over 300 patents obtained for mechanical and automatic timepieces, Tavannes produced movements for most of the famous Swiss brands including Patek Philippe, Zenith and Jaeger LeCoultre. Many of these innovations are still used today. In 2008 the company was relaunched, and in 2018 a new ‘La Captive Belt Watch’ was announced. The new design allows the timepiece to be worn as a wrist watch, golf belt watch or a desk watch, all inspired by the history and design of this original timepiece.

This bond resulted in the creation of timepieces - designed exclusively for the Brazilian retailer - named the “Chronometro Gondolo”. The collection initially consisted only of pocket watches, before the first wristwatches appeared in the 1920s.At a time when Europe struggled with lean years and faced a World War, it was Gondolo & Labouriau alone who retailed close to a third of the entire production of Patek Philippe watches. Sales were so spectacular that in Brazil, 'Patek' even became a substitute for the noun 'watch'; instead of buying a watch, you bought a Patek - even if it wasn’t a Patek Philippe at all.Dear Mr CanertYour registration was declined due to a block from Paul Beighton Auctioneers ltd in Dec 2019.  Please can you advise why this block was put in place? With kind regardsCheffins Fine Art

Wenger SA, to an integral slightly tapering mesh link bracelet terminating in a liveried three stage fold over clasp with safety catch, overall length 18.5cm, gross weight 79.5g The mid 1970s saw the start of the ‘quartz revolution’ for the world’s watch industry, and Japan initially led the way in terms of expertise, innovation and more importantly, sales. The Swiss watch industry reacted by introducing quartz models of their own and many proudly displayed the word ‘quartz’ on the dial to show potential buyers they were buying the very latest technology. Rolex, for example, introduced the ‘Oysterquartz’ and the wording on the dial of this example also shows buyers that this prestige watch contains a quartz movement. As buyers retuned to the mechanical versions of these Swiss watches, companies started removing the word ‘quartz’ from the dial, and today it is rarely seen on timepieces of this calibre. It is not uncommon for retailers to add their own branding to watch dials, as with this example. Chronometrie Beyer is an exclusive watch retailer located in the heart of Zürich in Switzerland. The partnership between Patek Philippe and Beyer is a long standing one, and in 2011 Beyer opened the first retailer-managed Patek Philippe boutique in Switzerland.
