Patek Philippe. An unusual, fine and exceptionally rare 18K gold manual wind asymmetrical wristwatchModel: Gilbert AlbertReference: 3422Date: Circa 1960Movement: 18-jewel Cal.99 P manual wind, adjusted to 5 positions, No.861415Dial: Silvered, enamel signature, black sectored hour markers, gilt pointed baton handsCase: Brushed and polished asymmetric rhomboid form, snap on back, No.2615624, inside bezel No.24Strap/Bracelet: Fitted black Patek Philippe alligator leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed 18K gold buckleSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 30mm x 31mmFootnotes:Gilbert Albert was born in Geneva in 1930. After studying Jewellery and Design at Geneva's Ecole des Arts Industriels, in 1955 and at only the tender age of 24, his design talents were spotted and he was approached by Patek Philippe to design some prototype wristwatch cases. Inspired by his favourite artists Brancusi, a modernist sculptor, and Mondrian, a non-representational painter, Albert defied the conventional way of designing watch cases. He incorporated asymmetrical and rhombic forms in his watches and the result was simple, sophisticated, and purely artistic designs. Many of Albert's innovative designs for Patek Philippe, such as Ref. 3412-3413, remained prototypes and were never manufactured in series because of the uncertain commercial success of his daring design. The current example is a reference 3422 which was in production for just 4 short years from 1960 to 1964. The case was made by Markowski and the dial by Stern Freres. It is understood that only 18 examples of this reference were created in yellow gold with a further approximate 5 in rose gold. Of the 4 rhomboid-esque references Albert designed, the 3422 is one of the rarest. His unconventional case designs are considered as exciting and innovative today as they were 70 years ago. This particular example has never been offered at auction before and is offered on behalf of the family of the original owner. In honest condition, this really is a rare opportunity to acquire a timepiece representative of a period of design exploration and creativity from one of the most desirable manufactures in the world. The small production number made only expounds this point further - this is not something that comes up at auction every day. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In recent history when watch manufacturers do produce pocket watches it is with one main objective - to demonstrate their depth of expertise and to really celebrate the rich history of complications that can be added to a watch. It means a fine modern pocket watch is not only a rarity but when someone like Patek Philippe decides to make one it will be spectacular. Patek Philippe have produced some of the finest ultra complicated watches in history with fantastic examples on either side of the introduction of computer aided design. From the Henry Graves super complication to the more recent extraordinary Calibre 89 and Star Calibre - each decade reaches a new height in their ability to produce such fantastic timepieces whilst expressing the real 'Art of Watchmaking', using their artisans expertise and ability to produce each part to the highest of standards The Reference 962 is no exception to this and is a piece made for the absolute connoisseur of watchmaking. The rarity of this watch cannot be understated and it is imperative to really appreciate just how much time is needed to complete the movement, dial and case of a watch that only Patek Philippe can attain with this extreme level of complication. Our research indicates that so far only one other Ref:960 has been seen on offer at auction before. The present piece is in exceptional condition and offers one of the rarest opportunities to own a piece of Patek Philippe history - one that may never come up for sale again. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

As the wristwatch became more popular, they changed production from watch chains to watch bracelets, and by the early 20th century they were well established as the most significant manufacturer of complicated watch bracelets in Geneva. They supplied bracelets to Rolex (GF designed the Oyster bracelet), Omega, Heuer, Universal Geneve and Zenith, and designed and produced the iconic bracelet for Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak A-Series. Their most famous creation was the ‘Beads of Rice’ bracelet, used extensively by both Patek Piillippe and Vacheron. In addition, they supplied their jewellery to such famous ateliers as Van Cleef & Arpels, Garrard and Hermès and the pieces they produced in the 1960s and '70s are some of the most sought after by collectors. As part of Rolex’s ‘industrial rationalisation’, Gay Frères was bought by the manufacturer in 1998 and continues to operate producing bracelets.
