MICHAEL Z. BERGER CO. POUR PABLO PICASSO. TRES RARE MONTRE BRACELET EN ACIER MOUVEMENT MECANIQUE MICHAEL Z. BERGER CO. FOR PABLO PICASSO. Berger Co, inside case back stamped M.T. Co.Size: 32mmFootnotes:Picasso is revered in the art world and beyond for such masterpieces as Guernica, La Vie and Girl Before a Mirror, but in the world of horology, a small collection of relatively humble timepieces owned by the father of Modern Art are considered the Holy Grail of watches. In horological circles Pablo Picasso is well known from the often irreverent photographic portraits in which he wore many of his watches prominently. Makers of these watches include the greats like his Rolex GMT Master, a Jaeger-LeCoultre triple calendar moon phase and some say even a Patek Ref.2497 although there are no images presently that support this. One that also often appeared in photographs is the present lot. There is a tradition in watchmaking to replace numerals with the letters to spell out a name. It is serendipitous that Pablo Picasso is 12 letters long and it was something he was surely aware of and was waiting to create when he had the chance. Picasso certainly enjoyed wearing and showing off this watch as visible in many portraits. The most famous of these are the iconic images captured by Cecil Beaton of Picasso in the 60s. In these images, part of the Cecil Beaton Studio Archive, the characters forming Picasso's name can be clearly seen as he stands in his studio with cigarette in hand. This piece of history was personally gifted by the artist to his friend and fellow creative, the late Greek sculptor Lela Kanellopoulou. She met Picasso at the Cahiers d'Art, having collaborated with Christian Zervos, publisher of the important Cahiers d'Art magazine and of the catalogue raisoné of the works of Picasso. According to the vendor, one of Lela's relations, she was someone of intrigue for Picasso who gave her the pet name 'La Belle Helene' as a reference to her beauty, Greek nationality and background in Archaeology. She told her nephew that one day in the 1960s, Picasso took the watch off his wrist and gave it to her, one of a few gifts along with a ceramic of his then wife Jacqueline. The current lot offered is a manual wind steel bracelet watch by little known Swiss watch Producer Michael Z. Berger who still exist in the United states of America producing branded products. The case is signed M.T. Co of Hong Kong who also still exist producing branded products. Only two other named dial watches like this are known with both of them residing in the possession of the Picasso foundation. As such it makes this particular watch likely to be the only example to be offered in the public domain – and with the unique provenance of being gifted directly by one of the 20th Century's greatest artists. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Indeed, thanks to the off-set subsidiary seconds and the calendar markers one can't help but see how vintage triple calendar wristwatches have had an influence here. The slimness of the watch is also remarkable given that it houses an automatic movement. We have the celebrated Calibre 240 to thank for this. The current example benefits from a service 5 years ago and has had very limited use since. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Patek Philippe. A fine and extremely rare stainless steel manual wind split second single button chronographReference: 5950ADate: Purchased 16th November 2011Movement: 27-jewel Cal.27-525 PS manual wind, adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism & 5 positions, No.525117Dial: Silvered, applied black coated white gold Breguet numerals, black outer 1/5th second and minute track, black flourishes to each corner, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for seconds and 60 minute recording, black leaf hands, black centre split second handsCase: Polished cushion form, snap on exhibition back, start/stop/reset set within crown, split second button at 2, No.4541753Strap/Bracelet: Dark brown Patek Philippe alligator leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 36mm Accompaniments: Patek Philippe box, outer card, Extract from the Archive Footnotes:When it was launched at Baselworld in 2010, the 5950A turned heads. The single-button, split second chronograph is powered by the revolutionary Calibre CHR 27-525PS. The movement, which was first used in the 5959P is, to this day, still the thinnest column-wheel chronograph calibre ever made. At just 5.35mm it is an exquisite feat of the finest watchmaking. Movements like this are the reason Patek Philippe are so revered.Despite its relatively young age, this piece is already a tried and true collector's item. The 5950A is an Application piece, meaning it was only ever made for and sold to Patek's best clients. Its limited production making it exceptionally difficult to find. The watch's distinctive design only further improves its desirability. While most complicated Pateks are fashioned from precious metals, this reference is crafted in stainless steel, a surprising, but welcome deviation from the norm. The classic raised Breguet numerals and belle epoque flourishes seamlessly compliment the modern aesthetic of the case making the watch timeless and modern. With such consistently strong numbers at auction, this model is the ultimate collector's piece. It is already cemented as one of the most impressive pieces from, arguably, the most important manufacturer. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
