A rare Meccano O gauge train set manufactured by Bing, 040 locomotive inscribed "George V 2663", complete with tender, two carriages and quantity of stock, in original box (box part af). This boxed set was made for Hornby and was one of a consignment that reached England just before the outbreak of the 1914-18 War with Germany. No more were to come and only a few went on the market as a "Meccano" product. Obviously Frank Hornby of "Meccano" was toying with the idea of entering the model railway business. Some of the sets went on sale but the remainders were kept stacked away at the Binns Road factory, Liverpool, until peace returned and re-issued after the war. Frank Hornby was obviously a patriot at heart! They appeared in the first post-war Hornby catalogue alongside Hornby`s new range of model railway items. They no longer appeared in ensuing catalogues. The Bing versions appeared with reversible mechanisms - curiously the post-war survivors could only run in a forward direction round the tracks (Illustrated).

* Roberts Aero Engine. A very rare early 20th c. pioneer aeroplane engine, Type 4X 50HP by Roberts Motors Ltd, Sandusky Ohio, USA c. 1910, four-cylinders in-line, water-cooled two-stroke motor, of lightweight aluminium and special alloys construction, having separate cast cylinders surmounting a crankcase jointed along the crankshaft centre-line, featuring exposed gear-train to rear for magneto-drive, water-pump and other ancillaries, having engraved maker’s plate to no.1 cylinder-barrel inscribed “Model 4X 50hp No 135” appears good condition and almost complete with all internals, fitted with Bosch Magneto type 4DU model 2, inlet manifold (lacking carburettor), and mounted upon a painted steel display frame. Roberts Motors Ltd founded by Edwin Roberts pioneered the use of lightweight aluminium and secret magnesium alloys of his own conception designated “Aerotite” and “Magnalium” in the construction of these engines of his own advanced design. Based on the lakeshore at Sandusky in Ohio, his engines were initially used in early float-planes and hydroplanes built by the nearby Curtiss Aeroplane Company for private and military purposes. Another constructor Thomas Benoist flew his own float-plane powered by this type of motor on an early record-flight from Omaha to New Orleans in 1912. Surviving examples of this type can be seen in the Smithsonian Institute and National Air & Space Museum, in the USA. (1)
AN EARLY 19TH-CENTURY WOOD AND METAL MODEL OF A NAPOLEONIC FRENCH `PONTONNIERS` BRIDGE BUILDING ENGINEER BARGE AND WAGON, the hull of stapled carvel construction with frames, braces, metal fittings, bitts, rowlock`s, and accessories including finely worked anchor, paddles, spade, poles etc, mounted on a detailed and accurately constructed four-wheeled wagon, overall Ñ 6 1/4 x 28in. (16 x 71cm.); together with a souvenir poster for the Regiment D`Art rie Pontonniers dated 1887 Ñ 20 x 14in. (51 x 35.5cm.) framed and glazed, (2) A crucial, but largely unrecognised part of Napoleon`s military machine, the specially-created Regiment de Pontonniers gave the Emperor a military edge by allowing him to outflank his enemies, being particularly useful in his retreat from Russia in 1812, saving the pitifully few survivors from certain death. By negating the need to march to established bridges, this Corps were able to establish temporary pontoon bridges in advance of the army`s arrival at strategic points in a river. Originally developed by General Jean-Baptiste Eble who took on a rabble of Rhine boatmen, he taught them to construct a bridge of up to eighty pontoons some 150 meters long in under seven hours. Although they were not lauded publicly by the Emperor, he regarded his Pontonniers enough to have no less than fourteen companies of them in his armies. All materials were carried in the Pontonniers` wagon train of which this lot is a rare and early example.
A. Lange & Sohne German observers watch circa 1940s, The matt black dial having luminescent Arabic numerals and hands, supported by hourly markers and minute track, anti magnetic nickel silver alloy case, inner cover marked Beobachtungsuhr Bauart: Lange &.Sohne, case side marked with contract no. Fl 23883, fitted with a 17 jewel manual wind movement, calibre 48 with hack setting feature, movement no. 210014, finished by Langeu & Sohne, Glashutte i.Sa , all movement and case numbers match and are correct. Case diameter 54mm. Beobachtungsuhr German pilot`s watch of WWII, translated as "Observer`s watchö or "Observation watch", and also known as `navigator`s watch`. This large Observation watch was produced by Lange & Sohne for the Luftwaffe circa 1939, and houses a high quality pocket watch movement: Lange & Sohne calibre 48.1. These watches were worn over the arm of the flying suit and were also equipped with large crowns in order to be used with gloves. Another feature was æHackingÆ movement (meaning the second hand could be stopped when put into handset position), essential for a precise time setting. This model is the earlier and simpler Bauart A type, having a more basic dial than the later B type which had a 5 minute interval dial and inner 12 hour ring. Stamped on the side of the case is "FL 23883". "FL" stood for Fliegnummer (flying number) and `23` meant a device for flight monitoring. The final `883` digits were actually assigned by the German Testing Office for Aeronautics, the DVL (Deutsche Versuchsanstalt f³r Luftfahrt). They were given to observers before the flight, when the navigator would set their watch to the second, and had to be returned just after the landing. The case is in reasonably good condition for its age, the case surface has general surface wear but no deep scratches or dents, the fixed lugs are in good order, the acrylic crystal has grazing/stress cracks. The matt finish dial has a build up of debris and some light surface corrosion, the luminescent markers and numerals are generally in good order, having some discoloration, the blue steel hands have surface deterioration, and light discoloration to the luminescent fill in the minute hand, more noticeable on the centre seconds hand. The movement has a severely bent bottom balance pivot, and the overcoil hairspring is bunched over slightly to one side, i.e out of round. The watch will not positively ‘click’ into handset position (dial not removed for checking of keyless work) so is probable that the bolt spring or pull up piece maybe at fault, otherwise movement seems in reasonably good order, the hacking mechanism seems operable, handset operates, and the train and pallets are free at present with power on. Fellows & Sons do not guarantee the working order or the accuracy of any watches sold.
