The handle of this unusual cane is a brass highly decorated miniature enamelled matchbox holder, or as they are sometimes called, "a matchbox safe. “This contains a miniature matchbox.(1 3/4" 1 1/8". 5/8") complete with matches. The label has the inscriptions, "LA PETITE", "SAFETY MATCHES", and "MADE IN SWEDEN" on a blue background, surrounded by a decorated border. The matchbox retains what are assumed to be the matches that it originally housed. These were produced 1914--1918 (see Pritzker Military Museum and Library website). Such holders were called "matchbox safes" as it was claimed they guarded against accidental ignition whilst in pocket/ handbag. However the real purpose was probably decoration. Majority of these items were for normal size matchboxes where holders were quite the fashion in the mid 1910/20. The miniatures are rare, especially when complete with box and matches. The holder top enamel is in excellent condition, red and gold scrollwork (Japanese ? ) set in black and white background. The sides show scorches where matches were struck. The matchbox is in surprisingly good condition although web search showed these are still available from very old stock. Directly below the holder is an aged collar -- material? The cane is an attractive polished hardwood wood with thin black collar between the shaft and the metal ferrule which appears original. Overall length is 35”/890mm
