Bronze Age penannular-ring. Late Bronze Age date, circa 1150-800 BCE. Complete and undamaged, formed of pale gold and silver wrapped around an iron or copper core. The toned silver and yellow gold stripes create a repeating pattern of alternating rings which encircle it. A circular-sectioned iron rod links the terminals. The penannular ring belongs to a class of artefact which has been termed 'hair-rings' and 'ring-money' (Taylor 1980, Eogan 1994, 1997, Hobbs 2003, Meeks et al 2008 and O'Connor et al 2008). Their function remains uncertain, although it is likely that they were personal adornments, possibly worn on the ears or nose, rather than being hair-ornaments or items of exchange. A recent scientific analysis of penannular rings categorised the rings into four broad types based on their components and decoration (Meeks et al. 2008). This particular example comes under their ‘Type 3d gold foil plated copper alloy ring, with silvery gold wire inlay’ and analysis of a similar one in the British Museum collections suggests that the technical skill involved in creating the fine silver-rich gold striped effect on the surface was highly complex. Recorded on the PAS database as: ESS-8F6336, Treasure case number: 2023T699. https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/1121298.

A WW2 era German Soldbuch, together with 3 award certificates named to Obergefreiter Gerhard Werner of 49 Jäger Regiment. To include: a Soldbuch detailing his service on the Eastern Front in the Winter of 1941/42 with the 12th Company 49th Jäger Regiment, 28th Jäger Division. He later participated in the division’s push into the Crimea. Gerhard was wounded in the upper arm by grenade shrapnel in May 1942, which resulted in him being transferred to a reserve battalion in order for him to convalesce. No further entries are made after June 1944, and Gerhard’s fate is unknown. The award certificates are for the Infantry Assault Badge from June 1942, a preliminary award certificate for the Crimea shield from May 1943, plus his official award certificate backdated to January 1943, and the certificate for the award of the 1939 War Merit Cross dated September 1943. As per his soldbuch, Obergefreiter Werner is also entitled to the Black Wound Badge, the 1941/2 Eastern Front Medal, and the Iron Cross 2nd Class. Condition: normal age and service wear. The Soldbuch shows some wear to the cover and internal pages, with a number of the pages also being loose. The award documents show some fold lines and normal age wear.
A large and impressive group of WW2 German Wehrmacht casualty documents, including a diary, and photographs relating to the service of Obergefreiter Anton Quetsch of the 12/Infantry Regiment 229. Including pre-WW2, and pre-NSDAP documents. Anton was born on December 7th 1918 in Oestrich, and he appears to have enlisted for service on August 5th 1939. Anton’s award certificate for his Iron Class 2nd class, and his silver grade infantry assault badge, and his Eastern Front Medal, plus the commemorative certificate regarding his death in 1942 (certificate dated October 1943). There is handwritten letter, a printed form relating to his service with the SA. The diary or journal included is interesting, and certainly worthy of having further translation carried out on the entries. The sutterlin script can be difficult to read, but there would appear to be an entry regarding the award of his Iron Cross, some of the actions he was involved in when in Russia, and his last noted words. Condition: some normal age and service wear. Some of papers show tears, foxing / staining, and general wear and tear, but they remain clear and readable for the most part.
A WW1 trench raiding mace or club, likely British in origin. Featuring a slightly curved polished oak handle, with pommel, and drilled hole to attaching a leather strap (perhaps for gaining extra momentum while swinging). The head section is of cast iron, with 6 protruding rounded spikes, and a further larger rounded spike to the tip. Secured to the shaft by 2 flat head screws. The wooden shaft is inscribed with a larger letter S, and embossed 3 times with the name ‘J.Sollis’. This could refer to one of several soldiers by the name of ‘John Sollis’ or ‘Joseph Sollis’ serving in line regiments on the Western Front during the First World War. Approximately 48cm in length. Condition: generally good. Service and age wear, with a small but stable split to the to the pommel end. Darkening to the iron mace, with there being some play to the head where it is attached to the wood (but still secure).
A collection of 5 WW2 era German award certificates, awarded to 1943 casualty Obergefreiter Gunter Kossatz of the 3/Panzer-Pionier-Battalion 51,23. Panzer Division. To include certificates for: the Wound badge (black grade), Iron Cross 2nd Class, General Assault Badge, Wound badge (silver grade), and the Close Combat Bar in Bronze. Notes: Gunter Kossatz was born on September 16th 1922, in Mückvar. He death is recorded as being on November 25th 1943 in ‘1.km.südl. Nedai-Woda’. His Black wound badge certificate is dated October 2nd 1942, Iron Cross 2nd class certificate dated September 16th 1943, General Assault Badge certificate dated February 21st 1943, Wound Badge in silver certificate dated October 7th 1943, and the Close Combat Bar certificate dated October 26th 1943. The certificates are accompanied by several pages of research. Condition: generally good. Some normal age related wear, such as staining, foxing, fold lines, and minor edge tearing. All of the information is nevertheless clear.
A unusual relic from the Siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War. Comprising of several small cannonballs or shot that have been welded together to form an iron candlestick. The largest central section has an original brass plaque applied, which appears to have engraved Russian words on that translate as ‘Memory of Sevastopol’. The top section is hollowed to accommodate a candle, with the base comprising of 3 musket ball feet. It’s uncertain if the brass plaque is contemporary to the iron cannonballs, with the iron parts being pitted, possibly from being excavated. Approximately 9.8cm in height. Condition: generally good and solid. The iron parts have a dark even colour, with some pitting and russet patches. The brass plaque is tarnished with age, with some very small spots of verdigris.
A WW2 German Soldbuch, and a Gold Wound Badge certificate named to Fahnenjunker-Unteroffizier Richard Weidmann of the 1/95th Grenadier Regiment. Together with 3 WW2 group shot photographs. Notes: Richard Weidmann suffered 2 wounds on August 19th 1943 while serving on the Russian Front, with the certificate stating that the award was conferred on September 8th of the same year. The award of a Gold Grade Wound Badge would indicate he suffered wounds of the most serious kind, and testament to this is the fact he spent the remainder of the war, and beyond in hospital. Weidmann is also entitled to the Iron Cross 2nd Class (February 1945), and the Iron Cross 1st Class (February 1945), which unusually have been awarded simultaneously. The Soldbuch contains details of his career, detailing when he joined the battalion on August 24th 1941, his promotion to Gefreiten on January 1st 1943, and his severe wounding in August 1943. He was appointed an Officer Candidate in April 1944, despite him spending the remainder of the war in hospital. He was finally discharged from hospital on September 11th 1945. Condition: normal age and service wear. Some blurring to the handwritten text in the Soldbuch from where moisture has crept in. The photo that would have been attached to the inside cover is now absent. The award certificate has some creasing, but nothing detrimental, and there are numerous pencil inscriptions to the reverse of the certificate. The 3 photographs remain in good condition.
