CONSTABLE JOHN: (1776-1837) English landscape painter. A.L.S., John Constable, two pages, 12mo, Colnaghi´s (London), n.d. (´Wednesday Evg´), to William Carpenter. Constable enquires ´Did I leave a silk handkerchief at your house - it was a rich toned yellow & I might have taken to kneel upon on looking at the stock´ and concludes ´It may have been stolen´. With integral address leaf (small area of paper loss to the upper edge). Some light traces of former mounting to the upper edge of the second page, only very slightly affecting a couple of words of text. About VGConstable´s correspondent was presumably William Hookham Carpenter (1792-1866) British antiquary, and Keeper of Prints at the British Museum. The present letter was written from the art dealership P & D Colnaghi & Co. of London, the oldest commercial art gallery in the world. established in 1760.
