Rare "Buffalo Bill" Smoking Automaton by Vichy, c. 1890 Modelled as the Western hero William F. Cody, with cigarette-holder in one hand, the other resting nonchalantly on the muzzle of his gun, with articulated mouth and eyelids, carved bone teeth, flowing blonde mohair wig, sheepskin beard and moustache, the going-barrel mechanism and bellows in the body causing Buffalo Bill to raise a lighted cigarette to his lips, turn his head, blink, open his mouth to exhale and tilt his head back as though savouring the experience, dressed in bead-trimmed suede jacket with fur collar, breeches, boots and felt hat, height 28 in. (71 cm) with hat, with Vichy key and "acorn" stop/start. This automaton commemorates William F. Cody, born in Iowa in 1846. A sometime cattle-herder, wagon train driver and gold prospector, Cody served as a soldier in the Seventh Kansas Calvary and as Chief of Scouts in the Fifth Calvary during the American Civil War, however it was his prowess hunting buffalo to feed the crews of the Kansas Pacific Railroad that earned Cody his title. In 1882 Cody began touring "Buffalo Bill`s Wild West", often featuring other famous acts, including Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. Performances in England for Queen Victoria`s Golden Jubilee in 1887 and at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889 ensured that Buffalo Bill remained a celebrated household name on both sides of the Atlantic long after his death in 1917. A rare example of an automaton depicting a named person, Buffalo Bill was a modèle despose in the Vichy catalogue. An impressive smoker in excellent restored working order as well as a fascinating piece of Americana. - Literature: Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", p. 107.Please Watch & Listen on: Youtube.com/AuctionTeamBreker Seltener Raucher-Automat "Buffalo Bill" von Vichy, c. 1900 Modelliert nach dem Western-Helden William F. *A comprehensive hard back journal of the Salonika campaign during 1915-18 kept by Sergeant Major L. Hayes, Royal Army Medical Corps M.I.D., including approx. 100 snap-shot black and white photographs of ships, local people, towns, villages, regimental hospitals, camps and soldiers and graves, approx.80 neatly handwritten pages taken from letters, the first entry is December 1915 discussing the embarkation for the Balkans from France, several references to Zeppelins, 6th June 1916 `I was posted to a Casualty Clearing Station where I had a little more knowledge as to the source and disposal of hospital stores. While I was there another Zeppelin paid a visit to Salonika harbour but this time we were ready for him and as we stood shivering in the very cold early morning we had the satisfaction of seeing the monster dazzled and held fast, as it were, between the converging beams of our searchlights. Land batteries and ships batteries ploughed their way up to the monster which seemed unable to move then the rays seemed to lose their object and a few minutes later we saw a mighty incandescence rising from the marshes of the Vardar just outside the town. Most of the crew managed to get clear of the airship and were taken as prisoners to Salonika, but one or two were said to have escaped`. Another descriptive account on 8th October 1916 reads, `life has been very eventful since my last letter for we have made a violent attack on the Germans with the object of capturing a strong position of his named Machine Gun Hill it seemed a pity that over a thousand casualties in three days should have produced so little result. We captured a number of prisoners and we have smashed up his positioning to a considerable extent, but beyond that nothing, two occurrences especially impressed me; one was a Sergeant being led away dazed but was unwounded, his hair standing stiff on end and his clothes so torn to ribbons that they scarcely held to his frame. He has been blown up by a shell without being otherwise scratched; another more gruesome sight was that of one of our muleteers, who had been resting under a tree near the church when he was struck by a shell that did not explode, a `duf`, as we term it. It would be difficult to imagine a beastlier sight of mutilation.` last entry December 1918 `we were marched to Sarigol, nearly a week`s trek away where we expected to be gradually demobilised.`, together with two original M.I.D. certificates to the recipient dated 29.3.1917 and 9.3.1919, a fascinating insight into a relatively undocumented Campaign. Sergeant Major Lionel Charles McLean Hayes, born 1885, educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Nottingham and Melle College, Belgium (1904-05), held various teaching posts, fluent in French and German, served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Gallipoli and the Balkans, twice mentioned in despatches and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and Croix de Guerre (with palms). *An interesting Great War M.M. to Sergeant A. Bishork, Essex Regiment, Military Medal, G.V.R. (13513 C.S. Mjr: A. Bishork.10/Essex R.), extremely fine, M.M. London Gazette 23.2.1918 13513 Sjt. (now Coy. S.M.) A. Bishork, Essex R. (Canning Town, E.), 13513 Sergeant A Bishork served on the Western Front with the 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment from 25.7.1915 (entitled to a 1914-15 trio), discharged 8.4.1919 and re-enlisted with the Royal Fusiliers 9.4.1919 (12891) The battalion diary recorded at 3pm on 22nd October 1917, C.S.M. A. Bishork and Lance-Sergeant B.T. Dupree had an exciting and perilous adventure. They set out to investigate a pillbox lying to the Company`s front, but with rifles that were rendered useless by the mud, their only effective weapon was a Very light pistol. The pair became seperated and Dupree, with the pistol, went ahead with the pillbox as his objective. Suddenly he came upon two Germans with a light machine gun. He immediately pointed his weapon at their heads and they were about to surrender when the garrison of the pillbox hurried up the rescue. `A rough and tumble ensued, in which the sergeant managed to give a good account himself. He discharged his pistol into the middle of the assailants, kicked the machine gun into a shell hole and then set about defending himself with his fists. But he was outnumbered and although the Germans could not shoot at him for fear of hitting one of their own men, a rifle butt on his head put an end to his resistance and he was dragged into the pillbox, but not before he had left his mark on more than one of his opponents... Dupree was marched eastward into captivity in Germany`, Much had happened outside, however, for C.S.M. Bishork had heard the report of the Very pistol and signals were made which attracted the attention on Private C. Andrews. He guided the platoon, then only about eight strong, to the strong point, which they found well held by the enemy and although they had a hard fight for an hour, in which they caused several casualties, they could not overcome the machine gun fire. They were in front of it when they were relieved by a platoon of the 11th Royal Fusiliers, who had been ordered up whilst the fight was in progress. About half past four heavy shellfire pointed to a counter-attack by way of the Westroosebeke road, but 2nd Lieut. N.D.J. Hight was able to deal effectively with the party, who got within two hundred yards of the Essex position, by deploying from shellhole to shellhole. As the Germans came forward they met with rifle and Lewis gun-fire. One of the latter weapons stopped firing owing to the mud, and L.-Corporal C. Tebbitt coolly proceeded to take the gun to pieces, clean and reassemble it and then fire again in time to assist the repulse of the final enemy effort. It was due to the coolness and determination of Hight and his men that the Germans were driven off, leaving several casualties, which were removed the next day (October 23rd) and all that time was the object of special hostile attention. When the 11th Royal Fusiliers came in at night, `A`, `C` and part of `B` Company returned to Cane Post and `D` Company remained in support in Rose Trench. Whilst looking for this point, Lieut. Nicol was seriously wounded and handed over command to C.S.M. Bishork, as all the officers in the Company had become casualties. Then having seen that all his men were safely in the trench, Nicol walked down to the dressing station...Testimony is borne to the assistance rendered during this bout of fighting by runners, stretcher-bearers and the Medical Officer, Captain Belanger. The casualties were severe totalling 253, p207-209,The Essex Regiment (10th Battalion) refer (also included in the lot is a copied photograph featuring Bishork, captioned `Sergts. Bush, Brooks and Bishork `round the old camp fire` in trenches somewhere in France). (1)
