CHARLES WOOLNOUGH WAS BORN 23RD JUNE 1895 IN EDMONTON, LONDON, THE SON OF CHARLES WALTER WOOLNOUGH, OF HIGHGATE. HE WAS EDUCATED AT HIGHGATE SCHOOL, LONDON, AND CAME UP TO MERTON IN 1914. HE ENLISTED ON 26TH JANUARY THE FOLLOWING YEAR, AND SERVED IN FRANCE. HE WAS SHOT BY A SNIPER WHILE IN ACTION NEAR LOOS, ON 21ST MARCH 1916, AGED 20, AND IS BURIED AT TRANCHÉE DE MEKNÈS CEMETERY, AIX-NOULETTE, PAS-DE-CALAIS, FRANCE SEE ALSO LOT 78
A LANG PERCUSSION WALKING STICK-GUN. An I Lang Patent of 7 Haymarket London N3 made concealed shotgun, as a folding action walking stick. Originally sold in a case with rifled or smoothbore interchangeable barrels, 42.1/2" when ready for firing. The folding ramrod or cleaning rod, sits neatly in the muzzle with blank plug end. Joseph Lang 1821-1853 was working at this address, before moving to grander premises. The bark effect finish and proof marked barrel, along with his makers name on the action are indicative of a good quality made piece. See Illustration
A PROPELLER BOSS. An propeller boss with clock inset in the carved face, also France 1918 above. Among the stampings are Gun Timing also D H 9-200 HP BHP Siddeley-Dg A B 7935-D-2900 and P-2380. two bladed and mounted on a plinth. The Siddeley Deasy engine was found to be overstated at 230HP later downrated to 200HP, as per this one.

Cased Imperial Service Medal named to William Louis De Courcy., George V1 issue. William L De Courcy entered the French theatre of war 17/7/1915, Class 1V Reserve 13/5/1919. British War & Victory medals named to his Brother in Law 125232 Pte S H Gibbs MGC. Sidney Harold Gibbs 59th Battalion Machine Gun Corps died as a Prisoner of War, on the 12th December 1918 of Pneumonia. (Unrepatriated) Buried in Berlin South West Cemetery, the son of Mr William and Mrs Gibbs of 20 Horton Street, St Phillips,Bristol.

AN MBE - GUARDS ARMOURED DIV & POLICE MEDALS GROUP OF SIX. A QE11 Civil issue MBE, 1939/45 & France - Germany Stars, War Medal, 1977 Queens Jubilee Medal, Police Exemplary Service Medal named to Chief Inspector Desmond C Buchanan. After serving in the Grenadier Guards then the Guards Armoured Division, during the Invasion and Surrender of German Forces, he took part in the Victory Parade in Berlin. Booklets issued for Brussels 1945 and Farewell to Armour Parade 9th June 1945, also a copy of the book The Guards Armoured Division 1941-1945 (Rosse & Hill) are with the medals.The Division officially landed in France on the 26th June 1944. The Normandy Breakout and Falaise, Nijmegen Bridge etc, are all part of their history. The 490 Miles in 25 days covered by the Division, including the Seine to the Somme's 89 miles(some sources state 75 mls) overnight 30/31st August 1944, has gone down in Armoured Brigade History. The losses on the attempt to get to the American Airborne Troops at Nijmegen Bridgehead, were very heavy. The son of Charles Buchanan MM and son in law of Frank J Betteridge, he was born at Chilbolton Hants, 1/7/1925. Leaving school he joined up aged 18 into the Grenadier Guards, served as a Gun Carrier Wireless Operator from August 1943. (Bren Gun Carrier)? No 2624406, landing on D Day +5. His was the first Gun Carrier into Brussels after the liberation of the city. His carrier was also involved with the Berlin Victory Parade. It is possible that he met his future father in law and his daughter Josephine Mary Betteridge in Germany. They married in 1950. He was in the Somerset then Avon & Somerset Constabulary, until he retired with the rank of Chief Inspector in 1982, after some 30 years service. With original photographs and copied career details. AN TRIBESMANS FLINTLOCK LONG GUN. A Flintlock North African tribesmans rifle as found. Elephant and warranted on the lock, proof marks on the barrel of 51.3/4". Steel furniture the ramrod mounts need repair or replacement. With its stock loose it is lacking a ramrod and no cocking spring evident. 68" overall length.
THREE PERCUSSION SPORTING GUNS. Three Percussion sporting guns in need of repair/renovation. The first is marked W Parker a single barrel sporting gun with 32.1/2" octagonal/round barrel length. Lacking a ramrod and its mounts under the barrel. The second is an incomplete sporting single barrelled percussion gun with a 31.1/2" round barrel, lacking lock and action etc. The third is a childs percussion gun with 18.3/4" barrel, lacking ramrod, hammer, screws etc. (3)

Some scratching to wood but no splits. Metalwork has no pitting and retains original finish. Overall good condition
