16th century AD. An iron sword comprising a narrow, tapering lozenge-section blade, double-loop guard, D-shaped plate, short tang and hexagonal-section pommel; probably German workmanship. 1 kg, 93cm (36 1/2"). From an important English collection; acquired in the 1990s. Cf. Withers, H.J.S. Encyclopedia of Swords and Sabres, Wigston, 2011, p.118 for type. The sword's blade is of classic later 15th to early 16th century type. The placement of the two rings forming the guard is unusual, since these are normally situated along the broad faces of the blade while in this example they are placed above the edges. The plate anticipates the development of hand-protection in the 17th century, such as the 'clamshell' hilt and the later basket hilt. Fair condition, edges notched.
