World Coins, Egypt, Fuad I, pattern silver 20 piastres, AH 1348/1929CE, struck at the Royal Mint, London, on a small thick flan, military bust l, initials PM (Percy Metcalfe), rev. value and date above central circle, 37mm., wt. 25.98gms. (KM.-), light grey toning, an unpublished coin, extremely fine, of the highest rarity In 1929 King Fuad ordered the minting of new coins and two designs for the 20 piastres were submitted for approval. The first was by the Egyptian designer Hamed Effendi Serri, which continued to show the King in civilian dress. The second, designed by Percy Metcalfe of the Royal Mint in London, portrayed the King in military uniform. King Fuad, an avid collector (a forerunner to his legendary father) chose the latter in order to have more variety in his coinage. It is interesting to note that this pattern was produced on a smaller and thicker flan than the issued coin (ref: Encyclopedia and Catalogue of Egyptian Coins by Eng Magdy Hanafy 2015, cf. p.226, where no illustration of this coin is available.)

I: Pagine [4], 893, [55]; II: [6], 862, [62]; III: [12], 560, [24]. Frontespizi calcografici, molte illustrazioni xilografiche nel testo, anche e piena pagina, capilettera e fregi incisi su legno. Qualche arrossatura, lievi bruniture. Three volumes, folio (355x230 mm). I. [4], 893, [55]; II: [6], 862, [62]; III: [12], 560, [24] pages. Engraved title-pages, numerous woodcuts in text (many are full-page). Woodcut decorated initials and headpieces. Foxing in places, light browning. Uniformly bound, contemporary vellum over pasteboards. Spines with five raised bands, inked titles. Edges speckled in red and brown. The spine of the first volume rebacked, the one of the second volume with a few wears, some wormholes to covers and spines. Ownership stamp on the title-page and first flyleaf od each volume, 'Biblioth. S. Caroli ad Quat Font', and manuscript inscription 'Conventus S. caroli ad 4 fontes de Urbe' on the title-pages and some leaves of the second and third volume, both to be referred to the Church of Saint Charles at the Four Fountains in Rome. Rare edition of this celebrated work by the Bolognese physician and naturalist Aldrovandi, who had collected a well-known private natural history museum. The Ornithologia is devoted to birds, and also includes descriptions of mythical monsters like the Harpies. The monumental treatise first appeared in Bologna between 1599 and 1603, supplemented with a magnificent series of illustrations mostly drawn by Giovanni de' Neri - also known Giovanni de' Uccelli - and cut by various artists. The Ornithologia represents the first part of Aldrovandi's thirteen-volume encyclopedia on natural history, of which only four were published in his lifetime. The volumes contain detailed descriptions, and some chapters are exclusively devoted to New World birds, for example the pavo Indicus or peacock of the Indies. Aldrovandi also describes the opera plumaria, which Montezuma offerred to Cortés: features which reveal his reading of narratives of the Conquista, first the De rebus Oceanis et Novo Orbe by Pietro Martire d'Anghiera (see lot 281). In this late Bolognese edition the engraved title-page of each volume bears the mention of the bookseller Marco Antonio Bernia, who was the financial baker of the publication, while Nicolò Tebaldini and Giovanni Battista Ferroni were responsible - as the colophon attest - for printing.

John Wesley Jarvis (British, 1781-1840, act. New Orleans, 1821-1834), "Portrait of Samuel Chambers Bell (b. 1805), husband of Eulalie Longer (b. 1811), New Orleans", oil on canvas, unsigned, artist stamp en verso (now obscured), 30 in. x 25 in., antique frame Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitter. Note: At about the age of five, the precocious John Wesley Jarvis was brought from his native Northumberland to Philadelphia, where he worked with the engraver Edward Savage (1761-1817). In 1801, at the age of twenty, Jarvis moved with Savage to New York. After a brief partnership with the painter Joseph Wood (c. 1778-1830) and a sojourn in Baltimore from 1810 to 1813, for the next two decades, Jarvis became the foremost portrait painter in New York. Jarvis and fellow artist Henry Inman (1801-1846) spent the winters of 1820-21 and 1821-22 in New Orleans, when they were frequently visited by John James Audubon (1785-1851); Jarvis continued those visits alone in 1828-29, 1829-30, and 1833-34. At the beginning of the last visit in New Orleans, Jarvis suffered a stroke—he had a notoriously undisciplined lifestyle—and returned to New York, where he died on January 12, 1840. Jarvis’s much-praised naturalism, objectivity, and liveliness are beautifully exemplified in this striking portrait. The sitter, Samuel Bell, is remembered for the very fact of his marriage: his wife of 1828 was one of the immensely famous and widely celebrated eight Longer sisters of New Orleans—her sister, Odile, married Edgar Degas’s (1834-1917) uncle, Michel Musson. Odile’s and Michel’s daughter, Mathilde Musson, married the nephew of this present sitter, William A. Bell, who sat as a model in Degas’s "Portraits in a Cotton Office, New Orleans" of 1873. Clarence Millet (American/Louisiana, 1897-1959), "Italian Houses (Sketch)", oil on canvas board, signed lower right, titled and "Art Association of New Orleans" label with title and artist information en verso, 11 in. x 13 in., framed. Note: Clarence Millet was a founding member of the Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans in 1992, and subsequently a charter member of their offshoot, the New Orleans Art League, in 1925. Beyond the French Quarter associations and clubs, Millet also belonged to the New Orleans Art Association and other artist associations throughout the country, resulting in his work being widely exhibited both in solo and group shows nationally. The New Orleans Art Association exhibition label on the back of this painting indicates that Millet was living at 1240 N. Galvez Street at the time of exhibiting this work. This address was the artist's first permanent residence in New Orleans, upon his return from New York in 1925. He set up his studio in the same building as Alexander Drysdale, next to a Chinese laundry in Exchange Alley, later renting space at 628 Toulouse Street in the Governor Claiborne House where Alberta Kinsey had her studio. Millet's atmospheric plein-air brushwork and bright palette perfectly portray New Orleans life in the early to mid-twentieth century, as seen in "Italian Houses" offered here. Many Italians settled in apartments of the French Quarter near Decatur Street in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, an area which for awhile was locally known as "Little Italy", likely this scene captured by Millet here.
