* Pope (Alexander, 1688-1744). Contemporary copy of an important letter to Samuel Wesley the Younger, 21 October 1733, single sheet of laid paper (21.8 x 19.2 cm), 25 lines, written in brown ink, addressed 'To the Rev. Mr Wesley at Tiverton Devon', dated 'Twitenham, Oct. 21 1733', toned and slightly spotted, creased where folded, shallow chips and splits to corners and folds, with one small hole in intersection of folds partially obscuring one letter, old repairs verso, mounted to a 19th-century album leaf, 4toQty: (1)NOTESPope discusses the subscribers to one of Wesley's books, echoes his opinion of 'Savage's strange performance, which does not deserve the benefit of the clergy', and elegantly thanks his wife 'for her good wishes in favour of this wretched tabernacle of a body'. The basic text is known to scholarship and included in Sherburn's edition of Pope's correspondence (1956, volume 3, p. 504), but is invariably printed either undated or dated 1735, and without the postscript here present on Butler's Hudibras : 'I am glad you were reduced to reading over Hudibras three times, and I agree with you that it is a great work. I speak this very sincerely'. It was first published in The Gentleman's Magazine (1787, volume 57, p. 589) as one of two letters to Wesley in the collection of contributor 'A. B.', and subsequent transcriptions seem to have relied on that recension. The other letter is from Lord Oxford, who is held to remark: 'I am very glad you was reduced to read over Hudibras three times with care; and I find you are perfectly of my mind that it much wants notes, and that it will be a great work'. If our letter is accurate, 'A. B.' may have borrowed Pope's postscript to flesh out Oxford's encouragement of Wesley's scholarly endeavours; if Wesley was preparing an edition of Hudibras , this was never published, but his work is acknowledged by Zachary Grey in his edition of 1744 (volume 1, p. xxxv). Concerning subscribers, Pope advises Wesley: 'You may depend on the money for the Earl of Peterborow, Mr. Bethel, Dr. Swift and Mr Echersall, which I will pay beforehand and I think you may set down Mr. Delany whom I will write to. I desired my Lord Oxford some months since to tell you this'. Rogers, in The Alexander Pope Encyclopedia (2004, p. 323), identifies the book in question as Dissertationes in librum Jobi , appearing not to realise that the author was in fact Samuel Wesley the Elder, and noting that Pope 'was active in promoting the subscription campaign, as emerged from his letter to Wesley on 21 October 1735 [sic]', while Sherburn claims more plausibly that 'the reference is to subscriptions for Wesley's Poems on Several Occasions , published in 1736 and dedicated to Lord Oxford'. Sherburn also believed 'Savage's strange performance' to refer to Richard Savage's satirical work The Progress of a Divine , published in July 1735. If Pope's reference to 'the benefit of the clergy' suggests an author in holy orders he may have meant Samuel Savage's Sermon on Submission to Divine Chastisement (1732), or another satire, John Savage's Horace to Scaeva (1730).

In volume one signatures [a]3 and I3-4 are cancels (the new [a]3 being one of two variants, with 'The first Volume' in line 1 recto, some copies having 'The First Volume'); Reed refers to a first state of the first volume, with no cancels, which was 'probably not issued'. Volume two has signatures O1-2 in their uncancelled first state and page 210 consequently with ten lines only; Rothschild describes such copies as first issue. According to Reed there were 750 copies of volume one, and 1,000 of volume two.

Hamilton (Patrick). Hangover Square or the Man With Two Minds. A Story of Darkest Earl's Court in the Year 1939, 1st edition: London: Constable [1941], 2 pp. advertisement at end, a few minor spots to endpapers, original olive cloth, slight fading to spine, dust jacket, spine toned, light spotting to rear panel and folds, 8voQty: (1)NOTES"As a mystery writer, Hamilton is best known for Hangover Square, which is set in the squalid Earl's Court section of London. Its protagonist is a schizophrenic whose problems are complicated by his doglike devotion to a worthless trollop who is two-timing him. Grim and powerful, this work is possibly the most valid fictional treatment and psychological study of the criminally insane." Of Royal Provenance. One of only two known regulators by Thomas Reid with his spring pallet escapement and pendulum. A fine and very rare early 19th century mahogany floorstanding regulator of one month duration, DATED 1816.Reid and Auld, Edinburgh. The movement repeat signed and dated. The case:the shallow arched hood with moulded cornice over canted front angles to a concave throat moulding, the dial surround lined in brass, over a long trunk door with shaped glazed panel to reveal the arc of the pendulum against an engraved silvered beat scale, and the descent of the brass cylindrical weight, flanked by conforming canted front angles, on a panel base with applied shaped moulding on a plinth raised on block feet. The interior of the trunk door applied with various labels including a 19th century printed 'Table of the Equation of Time'; a description of the clock hand written in sepia ink; an oval label of the 20th century Antique clock retailer Percy Webster; and an illustration from Britten's Encyclopedia of 1894. Further set with the engraved brass presentation plaque 'Presented to / THE LADY ALICE MONTAGU DOUGLAS SCOTT / on the occasion of her Marriage with / H.R.H. THE DUKE OF GLOUCESTER, K.G., P.C., K.T. / From the Directors & Senior Officials of the Royal Bank of Scotland / of which Bank her Father / The Seventh Duke of Buccleuch & Queensberry K.T., GVCO was Governor / 6th November 1935.' The backboard of solid mahogany one inch (25mm) in thickness sporting a shaped heavy cast iron plate occupying nearly half the length of the backboard to support both the movement and the pendulum. The dial:the 9.5 inch shallow arched dial signed in the upper part 'Reid & Auld, Edinburgh' in a flowing script over an Arabic minute track marked in tens, the upper half of the dial containing the Arabic seconds ring, the lower with a twice 1-12 Arabic hour ring, with original blued steel hands. The movement: of one month duration and heavy brass plates cast to allow the positioning of the barrel to the left hand side, united by four substantial turned pillars and secured to the cast iron seat-plate by three very heavy brass brackets, the seat-plate located on two pairs of brass angled brackets mounted to the tops of the case cheeks, the entire lower assembly using 18 screws to lock the movement in position. The movement is further secured within the case by a bridge-arrangement spanning from the heavy cast iron plate on the case back board to an extension piece set above the movement backplate. The iron horizontal seat plate and the vertical backboard plate both carry pairs of runners that would have originally located the brass-framed and glazed dust cover (cover now lacking). The brass weight suspended on a pulley of six crossings, pulling the gut line through a moving slide set on runners on the seatplate. The wheel train:the five wheel train with high count wheels of six crossings with pinions ranging from 24 on the second wheel to 16 on the 'scape wheel, terminating in Reid's deadbeat spring pallet escapement, all arbors with hardened steel end-plates where possible. The long crutch to Reid's own pendulum consisting of a larger diameter hollow zinc tube flanked by a pair of steel rods terminating in a typical massive bob with engraved rating nut. 174cms (5ft 8.5ins) high. Footnotes:Provenance: Their Royal Highnesses, The Dukes of Gloucester.A wedding present from the Directors and Senior Officials of the Royal Bank of Scotland to Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, later Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (1901-2004). Lady Alice married Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1900-1974), the third son of George V, on 6th November 1935.The oval plaque applied to the interior of the case is that of Percy Webster, the highest profile antique clock dealer working between the wars. Webster would have been the natural choice for anyone wishing to buy the finest clocks on the market at that time. The current clock is one of only four known regulators in the world by Thomas Reid, and one of only two that retain his original spring pallet escapement and pendulum. All four were made between 1811 and 1818 and comprise:1811 made for Lord Gray for his private observatory at Kinfauns Castle, Perthshire, Scotland. The month duration movement has a mercury pendulum and is remarkable for the use of anti-friction rollers. Remained with the family until 1934, altered to Richie's deadbeat escapement at about this time. Advertised by Derek Roberts Antiques, Tonbridge, Kent, in 'Antiquarian Horology' Vol.19, no.2, p131. 'This historically and technically very important regulator of 45 days duration was made by Reid virtually regardless of expense.'1813 made for Calton Hill Observatory, Edinburgh. Eight day duration, mercury pendulum. Altered in the 1850s to deadbeat escapement. Used, among other things, to time the daily firing of the gun at Edinburgh Castle at 1pm, and to ensure the correct drop of the time ball of the Nelson monument on Calton Hill. See 'Antiquarian Horology', Vol. 8, no.1, pp.51-61. 'The Astronomical clocks at the Observatory, Calton Hill, Edinburgh' by Christopher Wood, F.R.A.S.1816 the current lot. Month duration, original escapement and pendulum. Royal ownership since 1935. 1818 Month duration, original escapement and pendulum. Donated in the late 19th century by E. Thompson to the British Horological Institute. Restored in the late 1980s - see 'The BHI Reid and Auld Spring Pallet Regulator' by R. John Griffiths, 'Horological Journal', August 1992. Thomas Reid was born in Dysart, near Fife in 1746. Aged 16 he was apprenticed to his gifted clockmaking cousin James Cowan. When the latter died, Thomas returned from London to take over the business, proclaiming in the 28th November 1781 Edinburgh Evening Courant that '.... having received the instructions of the first masters in that profession, did carry on business and was employed in the execution of first-rate work there..' He ends the announcement with the promise that '..he makes no doubt of giving entire satisfaction to his employers'. Reid's skill and confidence were soon rewarded with public commissions all over Scotland including the first clock for the spire of St. Andrews Parish Church on George Street and improvements to the clock of St Giles' Kirk. His two movements for Annan Town Hall are particularly remarkable in that he designed them so as to allow access to each of the wheels independently from one another. He is best known today for his treatise 'On Clock and Watch making' written in retirement and which eventually ran to six editions. He died on 24th September 1831. Thomas Reid took William Auld into partnership in 1806. Comparative literature:'The BHI Reid and Auld Spring Pallet Regulator dated 1818', R. A review of the innovation following the pioneering work with gravity escapements from the earlier years of the 18th century is given below:THOMAS REID'S SPRING PALLET REGULATORSby Andrew KingWith the considerable advance towards the development of the marine timekeeper in the middle years of the eighteenth century, thought was evolving with new ideas to increase the precision of pendulum regulators. The dead beat escapement refined by George Graham earlier in the century was a very simple and generally robust system, but with the more recent successful achievement of the detached spring detent escapement in what was now, by the late eighteenth centur... Vannoy Streeter (Tennessee, 1919-1998) wire sculpture of a semi-truck comprised of a front tilting cab with movable doors, and trailer, both separate pieces with paper license plates and rotating wheels, ten total. 12" H x 30" W x 6 1/2" D. 20th century. Biography (source: The Tennessee Encyclopedia): "Self-taught sculptor Vannoy Streeter was known as "Wireman" because of the fanciful creations he fashioned from coat hangers and metal wire. Best known for his depictions of the Tennessee Walking Horse, Streeter also created scores of other images using wrapped and twisted wire…By the time of his death in 1998, Streeter had gained national exposure. He participated in the National Black Arts Festival in 1990, and his work attracted collectors from around the United States. Born in 1919 in Wartrace, Tennessee, Streeter moved with his family to what would later become a Tennessee Walking Horse farm. At the time, owners were still training their mixed thoroughbreds to prance in front of buggies. The oldest of six brothers, he learned the horse grooming and training business from his father. When the first Walking Horse Celebration was held in Wartrace, Streeter was there to observe the high-stepping front legs and sliding, low-slung back legs that created the characteristic rocking gait. After the Walking Horse Celebration moved to its current home in the county seat of Shelbyville, Streeter took special pride in the fact that African American trainers helped develop the Walking Horse style and that champion horse "Strolling Jim" was from Wartrace." CONDITION: Overall good condition with some oxidation.

CATALOG OF BOOKS IN THE NASHVILLE LIBRARY, MARCH, 1825, printed by Joseph Norvell, Nashville, 1825. 22-page pamphlet (including covers) with inventory of books in the Nashville library by subject matter (approximately 300 titles). Latter pages list Present Officers of the library and Library Rules. The front cover of this extremely rare imprint is signed by Judge John Overton, the early Tennessee jurist, advisor to President Andrew Jackson, co-founder of Memphis and owner of Traveller's Rest Plantation. Note: In 1813, the Tennessee General Assembly passed "an act to incorporate the Nashville Library Company." Seven directors were appointed to select a librarian, clerk and treasurer, but it wasn't until 1823 that the legislature passed an amendment authorizing a lottery to raise "up to $5,000" to actually purchase books. (Source: The Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science, published by Marcel Dekker, Inc. 1976). Note this was not a Public Library, but rather a subscription-based business venture; each shareholder was required to pay a semi-annual contribution of one dollar on each share. Persons not holding shares could, however, pay 12 1/2 cents per week to borrow a book and were required to pay the Librarian a deposit equal to the value of the book before it could be removed from the premises. The library, located "above Robertson and Eliot's Bookstore" on the Public Square, was open two days a week. This pamphlet is the earliest known inventory of the books in the collection. 7 3/4" x 5". Provenance: the estate of Dr. Benjamin Caldwell, Jr., Nashville, Tennessee. CONDITION: Paper brittle and fragile; lower edges of interior pages with deckle edges indicating possible losses; top edge with acid burn; general overall toning and light foxing; corner losses; break to thread used in binding.

Ɵ Two leaves with Isidore of Seville, Etymologiarum sive originum, book 20, with readings on wine, and Pubilius Syrus, Sententiae, in Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment[Northern France (most probably Cercamp, Amiens), third quarter of the twelfth century] Bifolium, each leaf with double column of 44 lines of a small and precise proto-gothic bookhand, written above topline and without biting curves, faded red rubrics, one-line initials of capitula for next book on second leaf in alternate pale green and red, large pale and green initials with foliate penwork decoration, reused on a binding in late medieval period and with folds across middle of leaves, corners of blank margins clipped away and slight damage through heat exposure to upper outer corner of first leaf, else good condition, each leaf 395 by 285mm.; in cloth-covered card binding Provenance: 1. Most probably written for use in the Cistercian Abbey of Cercamp, diocese of Amiens, founded 1141 with monks from Pontigny, ransacked in 1415 during Agincourt, but re-established before being forcibly converted to stables and a military hospital in the 1630s during the Thirty Years' War, then seized for military use again in 1710 by the troops of Field Marshal d'Harcourt. At the Secularisation there was little left to suppress. By the nineteenth century the buildings were in use as a wool factory, and later became the residence of the Barons de Fourment. This bifolium certainly reused there at the end of the Middle Ages, and with a sixteenth or early seventeenth-century ex libris of the house, upside down at the foot of the rectos of both leaves: "Abbey de Cercamp", most probably from reuse there around a set of accounts. No other manuscript or fragment of one from this medieval library can be traced by us.2. André Simon (1877-1970), wine merchant, gourmet and one of the most important twentieth-century authors on wine, who voraciously collected books on the same subject. 3. Sotheby's 6 December 1993, lot 5. 4. Schøyen Collection, London and Oslo, their MS 1777, acquired in Sotheby's. Text and script:This bifolium is from an elegant monastic copy of the most important encyclopedia produced by the Middle Ages. Isidore of Seville (c. 560-636) was part of the intellectual renaissance in the seventh-century Visigothic court, and was notably close to King Sigebut (c. 565-620/1), to whom the first version of this work was dedicated. It has been suggested that he composed it as a form of summa for his recently-civilised barbarian masters, but it quickly found other more conventional readers in mainland Europe and became the most widely consulted scientific reference work of the Middle Ages. It survives today in nearly a thousand manuscripts (Barney et al., Etymologies of Isidore of Seville, 2006, p.24), and by the year 800 copies of it could be found in almost all the cultural centres of Europe. The leaves here contain discussions of food, oils and greases, beverages (prominently including wine) and vessels for food. The second leaf contains the entries from 'M' to 'T' of the Sententiae of Pubilius Syrus (fl. 85-43 BC.), a Syrian slave freed by his Roman master due to his talent as an author and playwright. All that now remains of his work is this text: a series of moral maxims in iambic and trochaic verse arranged in alphabetical order. He was admired greatly by Seneca the Younger, quoted by Shakespeare (Much Ado About Nothing, sc. 1: "if she did not hate him deadly, she would love him dearly"), and his work is the origin of the expression "a rolling stone gathers no moss".

Ɵ Abu al-Fazl Hubaysh bin Ibrahim al-Tiflisi, Nazm al-Suluk wa Taqwim al-Adviyeh (a dictionary of medicine and guide to herbal remedies), in Arabic, decorated manuscript on paper [Ottoman Levant (possibly Jerusalem), dated Shawwal 974 AH (1556-7 AD)] single volume, 274 leaves plus an additional endleaf at each end, perhaps lacking a Fihrist at the front of the volume (indicated by the pagination of leaves), single column, 19 lines informal black naskh with headings and important words in red, title on fol. 1r with text in alternate lines of red and black, pagination and contemporary catchwords throughout, a few marginal inscriptions and a few ink ownership inscriptions to title page, some finger-soiling to margins, else overall clean and very presentable condition, 210 by 140 mm.; eighteenth-century leather over pasteboards with flap, boards and flap with some provincial tooling in blind, Ottoman style central medallions and corner-pieces with additional florets and stamps surrounding these, rebacked, resewn and doubleurs added, some repairs to binding, overall very neat and clean conditionAbu al-Fazl Hubaysh bin Ibrahim al-Tiflisi was a physician and astronomer, given the title 'al-Mutabbib' (the doctor) for authorship of numerous medical texts; including the present volume as well as the Kafiyat al-Tibb (Encyclopedia of Medicine). Though little is known about al-Tiflisi's working life, he is thought to have lived around 600 AH (1203 AD): see Brockelmann (Suppl. i. 893) and C. P. Rieu (British Museum Catalogue, 1883, p. 852). The present codex forms a substantial work on herbal medicine and acts as a reference work for medication and the application of practical remedies. The colophon is signed by Ismail bin Abd'ulhaq al-Hamsa Damashqi al-Mutabbib, whose title most probably records the use of the volume by an early medical practitioner. It clearly stayed in such use for some centuries, and an early eighteenth-century ownership inscription to the title indicates that it was still used then by another Mutabbib, Afif al-Din bin Sadaqa bin Afif, who worked in the al-Salahi Hospital in Jerusalem. The binding currently housing the manuscript was probably added by Afif and used in the Salahi Hospital, one of the foremost centres for Islamic medical studies in the Middle East.
