Early 17th century AD. A rapier of Pappenheimer type with pointed double-edged blade with short fullers, the ricasso with a maker's mark in the shape of a crown; double basket-hilt with openwork hand protector, an additional reinforcement ring to the lower part of the hilt, grip with original wooden core, pear-shaped pommel. See Oakeshott, E., The sword in the Age of the Chivalry, Woodbridge, 1964 (1994); Nickel, H., Pyhrr, S.W., Tarassuk, The Art of Chivalry. European Arms and Armour from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1982; Whiters, H.J.S., The illustrated encyclopedia of Swords and sabres, Witston, 2011; Vello, M. & Tonin F., I grandi spadai Feltrini e Bellunesi (Master Swordsmiths of Feltre and Belluno), Roma, 2017. 1.8 kg, 1.1m (43 1/4"). Provenance: From a private family collection; previously acquired from a collection formed before 1990; thence by descent; accompanied by an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato. This type of sword was probably an evolution of the Type XVIIIe of Oakeshott's typology (1994, pp.72ff.) having as its main characteristic a long and narrow blade generally with a long (5–6) ricasso narrower than the blade itself, and the pommel of pear form. Oakeshott correctly recognised that this typology was the origin of rapiers, probably of Italian or Spanish creation. The name rapier derives from the Spanish term espada ropera (sword of the robes), meaning it could be worn with civilian clothing. This is why the rapier is associated with the image of the Renaissance gentleman. However, this weapon was specifically designed for military use. Fine condition.
Late 15th-early 16th century AD. A two-handed sword with straight double-edged blade equipped with a narrow blood channel, three circles and letter R inlaid in brass to one side; long quillons with knop finials, knuckle guard with inlaid rosettes, long grip with maker's mark, convex rectangular pommel. See Wegeli, R., Inventar der Waffensammlung des Bernischen Historischen Museums in Bern, Bern,1929; Tarassuk, L.and Blair, C., The complete encyclopedia of Arms & Weapons, Milano, 1989; Grotkamp-Schepers B., Immel I., Johnsson P. and Wetzler S., Das Schwert. Gestalt und Gedanke: The Sword. Form and Thought, Solingen, 2015; the weapon has parallels with various double- edged swords in Bernischen Historischen Museum (Wegeli, 1919, pl.viii"). 2.2 kg, 1.29m (50 3/4"). From a private family collection; previously acquired from a collection formed before 1990; thence by descent; accompanied by an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.10211-167289. Doppelsöldner ('double-mercenaries', 'double-pay men', from German doppel meaning double, sold meaning pay) were the Landsknechte in the 16th-century Germany who volunteered to fight in the front line, taking on extra risk, in exchange for double payment. The stated ratio was that one Landsknecht in four would be a Doppelsöldner. Likewise, Landsknechte who schooled in the use of the Zweihänder, a two-handed sword, were entitled to double pay and thus qualified as Doppelsöldner. The fencing guild of the Brotherhood of St. Mark had the monopoly of the use of the Zweihänder after the Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, granted it to them in 1487. Fine condition.

Danish flora) is the name of a botanical atlas that was started in 1753 by Christian Oeder, director of the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen. It took 122 years until the entire flora of the Danish state was recorded in the manner of a herbarium - and the extensive encyclopedia was completed. In 1790, the Danish Crown Prince and later King Frederick VI ordered an extensive dinner service from the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Copenhagen, which was to bear not only the name but also the motifs of 'Flora Danica'. It was intended as a gift for the Russian Tsarina Catherine II, who died in 1796, before the service was completed in 1802. Thus deprived of its original purpose, the service was kept by the Danish Court, where parts of it are still used for state banquets at Christiansborg Castle. For your consideration is an exquisite “Indian and Bear” mechanical bank by J.&E. Stevens which was patented on Feb. 2, 1875, by J. & E. Stevens. This piece depicts a Western Indian Shooting a Bear and is often referred to as the "Bear Hunt” Bank. All the mechanical functions and pieces are operating and accounted for which is truly enjoyable due to the ability to launch coins into the bears chest which also causes the mouth to open. This piece has original coloring and originates from The Book of Knowledge which was an early encyclopedia founded by a scholastic corporation. The first tales from this company were renditions of stories from the wild west which started 1888. This cast iron piece measures 10” long by 2 ¾” wide by 7 ½” tall.
1902 Arrol-Johnston 10/12hp DogcartRegistration no. SA 88Chassis no. 57*One of the very earliest British motor cars*Present family ownership since 1991*Restored in 1994*Many-time finisher in the London-Brighton Veteran Car RunFootnotes:Produced by the Mo-Car Syndicate Ltd, Glasgow, Arrol-Johnston took its name from financial backer Sir William Arrol (builder of the Forth Railway Bridge) and its designer George Johnston, a locomotive engineer. A prototype was built in 1895 before the company's foundation in November of that year, making the Arrol-Johnston one of the very earliest British-built motor cars. The first example was produced in a coach house at Mosesfield House, Springburn; subsequently premises were found at Bluevale Camlachie in Glasgow, where this car was made. According to The Beaulieu Encyclopedia of the Automobile: 'Johnston's car was an unusual design, with an opposed-piston flat-twin engine. The connecting rod of one piston worked directly on the crankshaft, while the other acted through a rocking lever. The gearbox was driven by chain, with another single chain taking power to the rear axle. The dogcart-type body seated six passengers in three rows, with the driver in the second row.' Brakes of the spoon type operate directly on the rear tyres to hold the car when parked, while braking on the road is by a foot pedal-operated transmission brake. This original design, being of heavy and robust construction with high ground clearance and solid tyres, was very well suited to the Scottish roads of the period and carried on with little modification until 1906, by which time it looked distinctly dated. Arrol-Johnston survived a succession of reorganisations and changes of trading name, and built its last car in 1931. Its early ownership unknown, this Arrol-Johnston dogcart was found derelict in a quarry in the 1960s by George Strathdee of Aberdeen, who restored the car and re-licensed it in 1972. The car was hired out for film work and subsequently sold to John Waind of Doncaster, from whom Frank Thomson purchased it in 1991. After suffering a crankcase fracture necessitating a complete rebuild, the car has now successfully completed more than ten London to Brighton Runs and countless VCC rallies: Creepy Crawly, Scottish Annual Rally, etc. Originally started by a pull-cord (like a lawnmower) the engine was fitted with a Dynastart during the rebuild, while other noteworthy features include a bulb horn, warning bell, oil side and tail lamps, and a mirror. One of the most distinctive cars on the Run, this charming Arrol-Johnston is offered with a VCC dating certificate and V5C document. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A very rare pair of millefiori knife handles by Bernard Perrot Glasshouse, Orléans, second half 17th centuryWith an assortment of composite canes including several of the Maltese Cross, on a ground of scrambled lengths of colourful filigree and ribbon, mounted with later steel blades, the handles 7.7cm long, the blades marked for John Dobby, Wych Street, Strand (2)Footnotes:A millefiori shaft with several identical canes of the Maltese Cross is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession no. 83.7.43), attributed to Bernard Perrot (1640-1709), a glassmaker of Italian origin who was active in Orléans from 1662, see Erwin Baumgartner, 'Gobelets à millefiori à croix de Malte', in the catalogue Bernard Perrot 1640-1709 (2010), pp.67-77. The same shaft is illustrated by Paul Hollister, The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights (1969), p.20, fig.5, where it was previously attributed to 19th century Venice. Baumgartner states that a distinctive group of millefiori goblets incorporating similar canes have links to the Knights Hospitaller or the Order of St John, and are likely to have been produced by Perrot between 1668 and 1671. The present pair of handles was remounted by John Dobby, who was in business in London between 1832 and 1863.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A very rare Pietro Bigaglia scrambled millefiori paperweight, dated 1845Of tapered square form with chamfered edges, containing a variety of composite and silhouette canes including the date cane '1845', amidst short lengths of twisted ribbons and latticinio, 5.5cm square, 5.4cm highFootnotes:The first millefiori paperweights are thought to have been produced around 1843 and Pietro Bigaglia was among the first Venetian craftsmen to make them. The earliest dated examples are from 1845, the year in which Bigaglia exhibited paperweights for the first time at the Exhibition of Austrian Industry in Vienna. These rare weights are of the scrambled millefiori type and usually of traditional spherical form, a type known as the 'Venetian ball', see for example that from the Baroness de Bellet Collection sold by Bonhams on 19 May 2010, lot 63. Cylindrical and square weights are amongst the rarest and earliest examples, with dated specimens being particularly scarce, see Paul Hollister, Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights (1969), pp.18-9 for a discussion.A comparable square weight dated 1845 in several places is illustrated alongside a dated cylindrical weight by Herbert W L Way, Mrs Applewhaite-Abbott's Collection of Coloured Glass, in The Connoisseur (December 1922), p.217, fig.4. Compare to the domed paperweight signed 'POB' and dated 1845 in the Corning Museum of Glass (accession no. 78.3.143) and the example dated 1846 (accession no. 83.3.64), both of which contain a number of identical murrine including silhouettes of a duck and a horse. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
