Höfischer Schnepper von Georg Escher, Sachsen, 1. Drittel 18. Jhdt. Schlanker, geschwärzter Stahlbogen, an der rechten Innenseite die eingeschlagene Radmarke mit Strahlenkranz. Alte geknotete Hanfsehne und Einbund. Fangschnur und Aufputz aus weiß-blauer Wolle (jetzt grün verfärbt). Schlanke Säule aus Obstbaumholz mit Intarsien aus poliertem, fein graviertem Geweih, die Papageien und eine Eule zeigen, dazwischen alte Brandstempel als Dekor, vorne die eingravierten Herstellerinitialen "GE" (Georg Escher), Kolbenkappe aus Geweih. Intaktes Klappenschloss mit Nadelstecher (Schutzbügel fehlt, mit geschnittenem Maskaron verzierte Schlossklappe schwergängig). Bolzensattel fehlt, fragmentarischer alter Bolzenhalter aus dunklem Horn. Der eiserne Ring und die Schlossteile mit Vergoldungsspuren. Teilweise unvollständig (Intarsien, Holz, Pompons, Sehne), leicht beschädigt, Altersspuren. Bogenweite 56 cm, Gesamtlänge 69,7 cm. Elegante Armbrust, die den höfischen Waffen in der Rüstkammer Dresden gleicht, wahrscheinlich eine Auftragsarbeit oder Geschenk für den Münchner Hof. Waffen dieser Art dienten im 18. Jhdt. zum Scheibenschießen als Belustigung für Adel und reiche Bürger. Vgl. H. Richter, Die Kunst der Armbrustmacher in Dresden, Beucha, 2008, S. 18-24. Zumindest eine Sendung eines Schneppers von Dresden nach München ist belegt (Richter, S. 102, Anmerkung 109). A Saxon courtly crossbow by Georg Escher, 1st third of the 18th century Slender, blackened steel bow, on the inside wheel mark with sunburst struck on the right. Old burled hemp string and cord lashing. Lanyard and decorative tassels of white and blue wool (now greenish discoloration). Slender fruitwood tiller with polished, finely engraved antler inlays depicting a parrot and an owl, interspersed with old brand marks as decorative elements, the front with engraved maker’s initials "GE" (Georg Escher), antler butt cap. Intact flap lock with double set trigger (trigger guard is missing, lock flap decorated with cut mascarons is stiff). Bolt rest is missing, fragmentary old bolt channel of dark horn. The iron ring and the lock parts with traces of gilding. Partly incomplete (inlays, wood, tassels, string), slightly damaged, traces of age. Width of bow 56 cm, overall length 69.7 cm. Elegant crossbow similar to the courtly weapons of the Dresden armoury, probably commissioned or a gift for the Munich court. In the 18th century, weapons of this kind were used by the aristocracy and the rich for target shooting as a pastime. Cf. H. Richter, Die Kunst der Armbrustmacher in Dresden (tr. The art of crossbow makers in Dresden), Beucha, 2008, p. 18-24. There is evidence that at least one crossbow was dispatched from Dresden to Munich (Richter, page 102, note 109).

Schwerer Stahlbogen (locker sitzend, ohne Aufhängering), rechts eine Schmiedemarke "T" im Kreis mit vier Strahlenspitzen, Aufputz aus grünen Wollpompons, Einbund (darunter spätere Eisenklammern). Gebauchte Säule aus feinmaserigem Holz, die Unterseite komplett und die Seitenkanten mit graubraunem Horn belegt (kleine Fehlstellen), verbeinte Oberseite mit seitlich eingeschobenem Bolzensattel, beinerne Kolbenkappe, an den Seitenflächen reiche Intarsien aus Perlmutt und Bein. Nuss aus Geweih, mehrachsiges Schloss mit Stechlöchern, deutscher Stecher mit Nadelabzug. Durchbrochen gearbeitetes, graviertes Nussband, darunter roter Samt. Starre eiserne Kimme. Ungeknotete Sehne später ergänzt. Unvollständig, leicht beschädigt, Altreparaturen, Bogenweite 60,5 cm, Gesamtlänge 64 cm.Sehr repräsentative Armbrust vom Typ der halben Rüstung. A Saxon crossbow with bone inlays, 17th/19th century Heavy steel prod (loose, no suspension ring), on the right a smith mark "T" within a circle with four points, green woolen pompoms, anchors (with later iron clamps). Tiller of finely grained wood swelling towards the middle, the entire underside and the edges on both sides applied with grey brown horn (small losses), bone-inlaid top with lateral inserted bolt bridge, bone butt plate, the sides richly inlaid with mother-of-pearl and bone. Nut of horn, multi-axle lock with pierced holes, double set trigger. Engraved openwork nut band backed by red velvet. Fixed iron rear sight. The unknotted string a later replacement. Incomplete, slightly damaged, old repairs, bow width 60.5 cm, overall length 64 cm.Very representative crossbow of half-powered type.

A Saxon crossbow, late 18th century Schlanker, geschwärzter Stahlbogen (ungemarkt), mit originalem Einbund befestigt. Fangschnur und Aufputz aus rot-weiß-blauen Wollpompons (unvollständig). Schlanke Säule aus Obstbaumholz mit sparsamen Intarsien aus poliertem und graviertem Geweih. Intaktes Klappenschloss mit Nadelstecher. Bolzensattel, fragmentarischer Bolzenhalter aus Metall. Renaissance-Armbrust, deutsch, um 1550 Blanker Stahlbogen, auf beiden Innenseiten eine U-förmige Schmiedemarke geschlagen. Schön erhaltene, geknotete Hanfsehne, Hanfeinbund. Schlanke Säule aus braunem Holz, Intarsien aus poliertem Geweih mit geschwärzten Gravuren (Ranken- und Blattdekor der Renaissance). Im Faden laufende Nuss aus Geweih (Faden ergänzt). Vierachsiges Nuss-Schloss mit einfachem Klappabzug ohne Stecher, eiserner Abzugsbügel mit rundem Knie. Vorn eingeschobener Bolzensattel, Bolzenhalter hinter der Nuss fehlt, höhen- und seitenverstellbares Klappvisier (in der späten Gebrauchszeit ergänzt). Teilweise leicht beschädigt, kleine Altreparaturen, Säule zaponiert. Bogenweite 55 cm, Gesamtlänge 61 cm. Insgesamt schön erhaltene, seltene frühe Stahlbogenarmbrust. A German Renaissance crossbow, circa 1550 Bright steel prod, struck on the inside on both sides with a smith mark in the form of a "U". Well preserved, knotted hemp string, hemp anchors. Slender tiller of brown wood, inlays of polished stag horn with blackened engravings (scrolling vines and leaves from the Renaissance). The nut made of stag horn and secured with thread (the latter replaced). Four-axle lock with single folding trigger, iron trigger guard with round knee. Bolt bridge inserted at front, bolt holders behind the nut missing, folding sight vertically and laterally adjustable (added during the later time of use). Only slightly damaged, minor old repairs, tiller varnished with zapon lacquer. Width of prod 55 cm, overall length 61 cm. Overall well preserved, rare early steel crossbow.

Listed as 'Two German silver figures of men, on circular plinths pierced with Gothic foliage, late 16th century £100.0.0.' Charles Davis, 'A Description of the Works of Art Forming the Collection of Alfred de Rothschild', 1884, p.262, no.365, 'Two silver-gilt soldiers in early sixteenth-century costume. They are both kneeling, one has an arquebus and the other a sword. The stands are decorated with a diagonal pattern border, German work of the beginning of the sixteenth century. Height 5in' Catalogue Note These exquisitely modelled silver figures depict soldiers wearing early 16th century costume. The detail is quite astonishing with incredible attention to detail to the folds of the clothing, the feathers in their hats and the characterisation in their faces. The rocky bases were perhaps originally enamelled and they are very unusual in having articulated hands. They recall a much larger German silver automaton figure by Wolf Christoph Ritter now on display at the British Museum as part of the Waddesdon Bequest. The base has a clockwork mechanism which propels the figure across a table and perhaps our figures had some mechanism to move the articulated hands. The soldiers being offered were formerly in the collection of Baron Lionel de Rothschild (1808­ 1879). Lionel Nathan de Rothschild was the eldest son of Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777­ 1836) and after spells working for the family bank in Paris, London and Frankfurt, he became the head of the London house of NM Rothschild & Sons in 1836 at the age of 28. His London home was 148 Piccadilly which had sumptuous French Louis XVI style interiors. 148 Piccadilly was home to Lionel's fabulous art collection which he had developed during his apprenticeship in Europe. The collection which was divided amongst his three sons was dominated by Old Masters, many of which were acquired from the Van Loon collection, but also featured fine French furniture and Renaissance works of art including silver and early rock crystals. The collection is mentioned by Waagen in 'Art Treasures in Great Britain', 1854.

Medieval iron heavy crossbow bolt, short range to inflict damage on cavalry, L: 110 mm. P&P Group 0 (£5+VAT for the first lot and £1+VAT for subsequent lots)

Antiquities, Roman, gold finger ring, 1st-3rd century, 2cm across, 2.29g, oval sectioned plain hoop with an elongated oval flat bezel decorated with a corn ear or palm branch; together with a Roman 4th century gold foil cap with a ribbed wire border (terminal from a crossbow brooch), a semi-circular gold cap, and a crescent-shaped pendant with filigree decoration, 1.15g [4]. The ring hoop has been scuffed and folded inwards, but the bezel motif is crisp £100-£150 --- The ear of corn was a popular design on Celtic Dobunni staters, while the palm branch was often used to decorate a child’s ring to protect them from disease.

Forlani (Paulo), Il Disegno del discoperto della nova Franza, il quale s'e havuto ultimamente dalla novissima navigatione de' Franzesi in quel Luogo: Nel quale si vedono tutti l'Isole, Porti, Capi et luoghi fra terra che in quella sono, Venice: Bolognini Zaltieri, 1566, uncoloured engraved map, strapwork cartouche, margins of 10 mm with extended margins displaying 16th century watermarks including a star and a crossbow (similar to Briquet 749 & 750), map size 280 x 395 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:Burden, Mapping of North America, 33. The first published map to show the whole of America and to display it as a separate continent, and the first to show the Straits of Anian (The Bering Straits) between Russia and America. This very rare and important map was published and engraved by Paolo Forlani. At the same time, he also published La Descrittione di tutto il Peru, a map which completed the coverage of the American continent. Formerly attributed to Bolognino Zaltieri, it was David Woodward's recent study of the works of Paolo Forlani that brought this error to light. Zaltieri is now known to have purchased some copperplates from Forlani sometime around late 1565 or early 1566 and he then proceeded to place his own imprint beneath the title, thereby generating the misattribution.

A mixed group of bronze (mainly Roman) brooches from the personal collection of Richard Hattatt, each mounted on a display block with descriptive text; the following types are present in the collection in chronological order: La Tène I type from Spain; British penannular type from Oxford; British trumpet type with silver inlay from Peterborough; Roman rosette type from Colchester; Roman Hod Hill type from Norwich; Roman kraftig profilierte type from Wroxeter; Roman Colchester type from Lakenheath; Roman dolphin type (findspot unknown); Roman T-shaped type from Lechlade; Roman bird-in-flight type from Oxford; Roman head stud type from Doncaster; Roman enamelled disc type with central stud from Thetford; Roman enamelled disc brooch from Wiltshire; Roman crossbow type with gilding (no findspot); Roman plate type with glass boss (findspot unknown); Roman knee brooch from Belton; all featured in Hattatt's catalogues. Late 4th century A.D. A gold crossbow brooch with three ogival knops to the headplate, square-section bow and U-section rectangular footplate decorated with edge notches; pin and catchplate to reverse. Cf. Biscottini, P., Sena Chiesa, G., Costantino, 313 d.C.L'Editto di Milano e il tempo della tolleranza, (Constantine, A.D. 313, the Edict of Milan and the times of the Tolerance), Milano, 2012, the Louvre fibula in fig.163, p.253. 6.45 grams, 34 mm (1 3/8 in.). Ex private European collection. Acquired by the current owner in 2001. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate no.11326-189857. In the late Roman Empire, the children of Imperial officials and dignitaries, who were part of the Militia Armata and the unarmed Militia, acquired symbols and titles of the father, from whom they usually also inherited their profession. The quality and size of the fibula could link it to the son of a military commander, a vir illustris or vir nobilissimus, and therefore belonging to a puer illustris or nobilissimus.
